Just noticed I've got a 13mm screw in the front off side (only know the size as its from work), but I think its to near the tyre wall to be repaired. Not happy as its still got 4mm :fighting: :fighting:

If its not, obviously I'm going to replace in pairs but is it best to have the new ones on the front or the rear??
Cheapest I can find PS3's atm is on camskill for £125

Looks a bit close to the sidewall to me. :scared:

No, too near the wall. Weakens the structure. I've had a few like that. It's always on the tyre with the best tread!!!
I'd always have the best tread on the front.

+1, although i have had hot vulcanised repairs done in that area and they have been fine but it's always a gamble imo..
-
i wouldn't repair it as it 's to near the side wall

Cheers guys, exactly what I thought and I know exactly when it would've happened :fighting: Its
just annoying that its gonna be £250 + fitting for 2 tyres and that I've driving on it for at least 2 days so wouldn't have been fun if it decided to go. :scared: Think the spare will have to go on tomorrow (hoping thats ok) as ill have to wait for delivery :sad1:
SUJO2329, thats what I thought but I'm sure I have read about it being better to put new tyres on the rear but I can't recall why that was.

It's good practice to have the tyres with the most / best grip on the rear wheels of a fwd car as that will be the end which will let go first :happy2:

Guys, I'll bow to your better judgement as to the front/rear issue. I'd have them only as they are the drive and steering wheels. I can ask someone (advanced police driving instructor) at work and post a reply in 2 hours.
Either way, it's a sore one at that price!!

If it's good enough for VBH

Ahhhhh, problem solved......plus a hot car chick with a husky voice thrown into the bargain!
-
Cheers Beddie, knew I'd read/seen it somewhere.
Got to have a phone round tomorrow as I wont be able to get them delivered until next week or get somewhere to have them fitted until saturday week, don't want the spare on for that long :sad1:

You could get a part worn off eBay (from a specialist supplier thatvhas checked the tyre throughly) that will match the tyre on the other side? Thatscwhat I'd do rather than replace 2 prematurely :happy2:

I had a quick look on there earlier but couldn't find anything really, but if you know any reputable sellers you could point me in the direction of I would be very grateful

people have put 2nd hand tyres on for years with no problem--but having seen some badly repaired ones i wouldn't fit them on mine
-
This happened to me, luckily I was near a tire shop, drove just round the corner to them and pulled the nail out (obv if it started to hiss deflat then no problem I was already at the shop) but it didnt thankfully.. right pain in the ass when something like this happens
-
Think I'm gonna do that tonight and see what happens as a few in the yard have had this and got away with it, if it does leak I'll put the spare on until I can get it changed.
-
If the screw is pointing in to the middle off the tyre away from the sidewall id guess it was ok , Also the front rear thing id have thought as you steer with the fronts and in the wet etc I would go with put your best on the front.
Looks like from reading all the posts above I am wrong on both points. To be fair for £250 id just buy a pair and be done with it sell the old pair on sh*t bay wording it one needs a repair /puncture fixed and recover some cash there better to be safe and all that
-
Even if the screw is pointing away from the side wall it still is to close to the side wall as the patch or mushroom will be on the side wall which will come away eventually

You have more weight over the front tyres = more grip. weight distribution of a mk5 golf is approx 59% front / 41% rear.
Add to that another 70kg give or take when a driver is sat in it, more still if you have someone in the passenger's seat. kids in the back don't weigh as much
