As alot of you know myself and my family went through a serious house fire a few years ago, this weekend marks its anniversary. Not going to go into details about the fire so dont ask :happy2:
..but please, go test your smoke alarms - whens the last time you did it eh?
if you dont have them fitted, get them fitted.
Put one in your loft, above your bed too.

I find it absolutely abhorrent how lackadaisical people are about fire safety. I've no direct experience to go off but I've seen enough in the media to scare me.
Ours get checked regularly and we have escape routes planned out etc.

Good shout VC :congrats:

Will do VC. We only have 1 on the stairs at the moment. We will make sure to get a couple more. :-)
-
Good call VC, I've just fitted some in our new house. :happy2:
Also fitted a Carbon Monoxide detector too, i think they are very important too, had one in our student house at Uni and one night we were all feeling headachie / drowsy in the lounge and a short while later the Carbon monoxide detector went off. Britsh gas were round with ten minutes of calling them and switched everything off at the mains :happy2:, took our crappy land lord 10 days to get it all fixed.

Glad you are here to pass on advice VC. As a firefighter myself, I can't back up what you say enough. :congrats:
-
Thanks for the heads up. Mines working fine.
Not to self - test smoke alarm more often.
Sorry to hear about your house fire VC
-
Good call.. :happy2:
My parents had a house fire a few years back, it's so important to check alarms.
Ours goes off weekly due to my great cooking skills !

A thoughtful reminder to everyone VC :congrats:
Have a Fire Prevention Officer speak to us after my mum had a small chip pan fire at her house (she was fine) and after the horror stories he told us we now have proper detectors in EVERY room (especially the bedrooms), and yes they are checked. The Officer told us bedrooms are usually over looked for placing detector but as he put it "you wouldn't want your kids bedroom filling up with smoke and the first thing you know about it is when the detector all the way in the hall goes off because by then it may be too late for them", chilling!
Oh and plan your escape route incase of fire. My family know what to do regarding windows (ie if you have UPVC windows, some don't open fully so not enough room to get out, they may be a special latch. Do your kids (or even you) have a torch by the bedside, in a fire you power will probably go out) and even in your own house may be disorientated.
I hope you and yours were all ok VC.
:happy2:

Replaced battery in each one and tested.
Thanks VC!

simple but very good points :happy2: :happy2:

Strathclyde fire service came to our house last year and fitted four smoke alarms FOC in critical areas, which featured 10 year batteries. This allowed us to move all of our pre-existing smoke alarms to other areas of the home which we had previously thought not critical, but yes it does make sense to get as much warning as possible!
-
Mine works, Set it off on saturday night cooking/burning our dinner. :ashamed:
-
Road to work closed yesterday because of a house fire... was a sorry sight to see this morning, all black and no roof, windows all out...
Reports say they had smoke detectors, but weren't working... They had to jump from a 1st floor window... :surprised:
As VC says check 'em!
