I know lots of people love modding their cars but are there any downsides besides it making your insurance more expensive.. :rolleye: Im rather new to this scene and bought my gti mk5 already modded to 280-290bhp and was just curious as i was thinkong about taking it up above 300+bhp

Having no money left for anything else, spending hourstrawling the internet looking for new mods, garage turning into a scrap yard of old car parts....
Other than that its great fun :)
I think it would take quite a bit to get a ko3 turbo above 300+ reliably
Could always put a ko4 turbo on?

The only downside IMO is over modifying your car beyond its limitation. Don't go chasing figures, aim for a well rounded car with mods that compliment each other.

Lol thanks for the feedback guys appreciate it! And yeah i think im going to try to make my car all round a better performer. Going to awesome gti and may buy a walkit as my car wheelspins and hops way too much from standstill!

It's addictive! And the more you learn about your car, the more you realise what you can do to it. I wanted to leave it totally stock apart from Stage 1, but now I've done that, I've a list as long as my arm. All good fun and games though.

I would agree with Rich, also take into account what you use the car for. It its still daily driver you want it reliable and still nice to drive at slow speeds.
Also if your wanting big bhp numbers may be worth looking at part exchanging it in for maybe a ed30 or even s3 as in long run may be cheaper.

i see the "hobby" side of it, hence why i do it myself BUT at the same time i sometimes think "why bother"? might as well save the modding money and buy a car that is faster off the shelf. Stage 1 S3 will see off a Stage 2+ GTI any day, and after you've sorted the brakes and suspension etc of the GTI you won't exactly have saved money.
i love modding my car, which is due an exhaust next week and Stage 2+ mods and map next month, but it'll only ever be as quick as a stock S3 - so why didn't i wait and get an S3 to begin with?
just something to think about...

Never getting the money back come re-sale time, unless you strip it and return to standard, hopefully if you had space to save all the OEM parts.
I think the GTI/ED30 is great out the box, but a stage 1 map does totally transform the car, resulting in you wanting to do brakes, exhaust etc... :party:

I don't like the S3 much. Looks nice but I wanted a Golf GTI. The fact that it was an Edition 30 was a bonus. The remap is like icing on the cake. You could always buy a bigger cake but sometimes you just want something a little extra special.

Any performance mods need to leave 'headroom' tolerance otherwise things break or go wrong too easily and the whole process gets expensive in a very negative way as well as being grossly inconvenient.
