IMHO i think the steering wheel pod looks the best, if you look in my build thread you can see a picture of newsouth performance gauge in a steering column pod - ashtray is a bit pointless because that would mean looking straight down to see anything whereas pillar or wheel column or air vent it is in your peripheral vision or atleast easier to see without taking your eyes too far from the road.

You can't read PM's until you have 10 posts mate.
Personally think the Boost gauge looks a lot more OEM when placed in right hand side air vent. Newsouth do a gauge which matches the blue light very well. Get posting bud  :happy2:

I've got a vent mounted one and the gauge matches the dash colours.

If you have highline clocks buy a Polar FIS. Digital readout and no pods poking out where they shouldn't  :P. If not I would go for the column mounted one.

i dont think mines high line TBH, i do like the air vent gauge, how easy was it to fit?

Does the Polar FIS Highline display completely overwrite the current Highline or is it just added into the current menu. Seems to be just a Plug and Play thingy if I'm correct? Sorry for highjacking this thread bud!

If I hadn't got my PogoAlert GPS speedo in that central topside, I might position my boost gauge there and along with oil temp gauge.

I have had my boost gauge in the air vent position but by far prefer it where it is now atop the steering column:

^ It's much easier to read the values as they whip around very fast indeed. It's in the line of sight with the rev counter - It's a no-brainer in my opinion.

....That's fine in theory but in practice it's much easier to read an analogue-style needle than a numeric display. The human brain can capture the hand/needle position abstractly and recognise a problem more quickly and easily and with less distraction from driving.

Try it - It's the same with the rev counter: You assess and make decisions based on the needle position more quickly than reading the number of revs.  :happy2:

....Just be aware that you may have to either slightly alter your seat height or lower your steering column so you can see your full beam headlights icon at night.

That is a good point and one I personally had not considered. Rather glad I have not had my gauge installed yet!!  :happy2:

At first my steering column pod creaked but it doesn't anymore. My hard, not harsh, suspension doesn't help!

A gauge positioned in the airvent might look more OEM but I personally think it's more important how easy it is to read while driving.

The GTI should have come ex factory with a proper boost gauge and not something over styled like on the GT.

I forgot I wrote a review:  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,22187.0.html

Pretty simple to install depends on year of car as to which location the Gateway is in as it piggy backs off that. Mine the FIS+ advanced it has a lot of features in addition to the parameters it displays, see web site

Have a 08 ED30. Just had a look at that link and do like the look of the Polar Fis+ Advanced and wow there really are a FEW features there, will really be able to keep an eye on all aspects of engine etc. Not a bad price either. Oh and who am I kidding, I will be getting someone who knows what they are doing to fit this if I get it. Once again, cheers.

Does the Polar FIS do boost on the petrol Mk5?

That Polar mod looks absolutely great - Do they work on a Midline?

But I would still want a boost gauge as well because the gauge, if in line of sight, is the easiest to see and is analogue needle.

It certainly does, they keep adding more parameters to it as well.  You can check it out tonight at our meet at the Leathern Bottle  :happy2:

The development team have also just completing the beta test coding for the White FIS on  the newer cars, and the hardware is the same you will be able to update it from the Autopolar website to the new software if you changed your car and went from a Red FIS to a White FIS.

I think it only works with Highline display RR.

@ Robbogti - The unit is basically plug and play, some additional functions such as Parktronic emulation need enabling with VCDS and then you can activate through the polar unit on the highline display

Does anyone know please how difficult and expensive it is to replace a Midline with Highline? Or is it even possible?

Yeah, the matching display really helps to make the whole pod more OEM rather than a bolt-on goodie from the far east.
