I know there's a few threads on this but wanted to clarify...
Running out of retrofits to do so looking at changing the brakes, I have found some front carriers from a GT170, I take it these are 312mm? Is it just a case of swapping these out then adding 312mm discs?
I want to keep the original calipers to make it as simple as possible.
Also looked on ETKA and the dust shields for 288 and 312 have the same part number - did you guys who've done this mod keep your existing dust shields?
Finally, is it the same for upgrading the rears - carriers, dust shields and discs? Does anyone know the sizes of GT170 rears as they guy has all the carriers available.
Sorry for all the questions.
David

Excellent, so it's just carriers + discs for both front and rear?
-
carriers on the front, as for rears dont know as i just bought BERGs GTI rears complete and fitted them
-
Is there any actual benefit other than aesthetics to putting 312mm discs on, seeing as the pad remains the same?
Not sure now as I remembered why I didn't do this before - my M&S winters won't fit anymore being 15s.

i'm not the best at physics, but i'd imagine that because even tho the hydraulic pressure and contact area are the same, because the force is being applied a further distance from the centre more stopping force is being exerted.
only comparable example i can think of is this:
try push a door right by the hinges. then push the same door on the edge furthest away from the hinges - it's easier the second time becase you're applying more force to the pivot (hinges) by pushing further away. I'd imagine it's a similar thing.

I just told you so, and look at the pictures of front and rear, red caliper carriers and non painted calipers, says it all IMO :signLOL:

You're absolutely right :notworthy:

Thanks guys.
A kind member is sorting me out with front carriers so will get on with this in a few weeks.

Skard, like the idea could you update on price of parts when you have done it? Something I always like doing upgrading brakes.
:D

I want to do this too, maybe we could all get some kind of deal.

I had my eye on some carriers from eBay but getting the front sorted by another member, and I see new Mintex discs on eBay for £55, so a fairly cheap upgrade. Hoping my mrs' Altea takes the 288mm setup and not 280 as my discs are still shiny.
Will probably do the rears in time, more mk5's and similar appearing in scrappies now so should be easier to get carriers.
