I must admit that I had been dreading reaching 100,000 miles, especially as it has coincided with me becoming an OAP, at least officially if not in mind. The fear was that it would be the beginning of the end but in fact it's the beginning of yet another new era. Generally the car feels the same to drive as it did after 50,000 miles - Gosh, that now looks such a small number when written! For those who don't know, she's a Mk5 GTI K03 built in July 2005 and owned by myself from new.
I've never created a build thread on the forum and quite honestly it would be very tedious and longwinded to do so retrospectively. I've been running Revo Stage 2 for a while and when a Forge Twintake was installed JKM needed to reduce the Boost setting a notch to compensate for my OEM fuel pump. A dyno day session at JKM this February showed a drop in bhp to around 244 from a maximum of 269 in 2011 and it was thought that, subject to logging and investigation, perhaps the valves might need replacing. Fortunately, this was not the case and Jim at JKM took the opportunity to inspect the stems etc and they were found to be surprisingly clean which is unexpected for a high mileage 2.0T FSI engine. Having a catch tank probably helps more than anticipated, as does changing the oil every 10,000 miles regardless of Volkswagen's longer service intervals. I also change the plugs every 20,000 miles. All these actions have been recommended to me by professionals as being a good maintenance practice for performance modified cars.
JKM's investigation diagnosed that the OEM fuel pump was occasionally struggling although I hadn't experienced any dreaded fuel cuts but just sometimes a lag in response when pushing on hard. My choices were an OEM replacement but that wouldn't have solved the problem; Autotech internals fitted to my existing pump; Or an APR High Pressure Fuel Pump built for purpose and guaranteed to handle whatever is thrown at it. The APR is by far the most expensive option but I had to put my money where my mouth has always been on the subject in the forum. Installing the APR also allowed the Revo Boost setting to go back up a notch and my car return from 'Stage 1.5' to Stage 2.
Also, a new MAF was needed - The first since the car was built. So my 100,000 mile oil service at JKM also resulted in the APR HPFP, new Cam Follower (although not needed yet), new MAF, new replacement Forge Twintake filters, new fuel filter, and new NGK Iridium spark plugs.
I've driven 780 miles this week and she feels fresh and invigorated - So do I !!

Something I have learnt from modifying my car is to always leave 'headroom' tolerance rather than push the performance envelope to the max. Max power is undoubtedly fun but it potentially sacrifices reliability and longevity and can get even more expensive. Driveability is what I have always saught and that includes good handling and strong braking. My Mk5 GTI is very tactile and fun. I now feel very confident about the next 100,000 miles!

Nice one for reaching such a milestone nice to hear its still fresh and tight. Or is that another post we should start
-
I like every extra you have added to your car.
i remember carrying out the PDI over 100000 miles ago on it :happy2:
-
I reckon with the new APR pump and yuor stage 2 map that you'll be mid 270s now and also have a much stronger midrange. Carls Octy was the same iirc when on stage 2 with the APR pump.
Did you buy this from new? How many of those miles have been mapped. I bet the std suspension is like new.
I do like the way you havent been swayed by chasing power though. You probably have one of the best balanced cars on here for power/chassis setups
-
Congratulations on both accounts Robin. (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/Smileys/newsmileys/partywave.gif)

....HEY!! Dan!! I was talking about you this week at JKM - About if I needed Revo settings tweaked without going all the way to Portsmouth. It got me thinking I should swing by your workshop and say hi and catch up - It's been a while.

....Yep, noticeably stronger from 70 up and one has to watch that GPS speedo!
Yes, I bought the car new and on order from Wolfsburg and Shabba168 PDI'd it.
About 60k miles mapped - Revo Stage 1 first and also Revo DSG map.
The standard suspension came off a very loooong time ago! KoniFSD+Eibach and then KW V3.
Hey, thanks for "one of the best balanced cars" compliment :drinking:

Yeah thats fine not a problem pop down. we have moved now tho we are on portland by the marina.

A great story :happy2:
I don't know what it is, but I find journeys like this particularly evocative. A friend has just taken his MK1 TT past 100,000 miles and it has been a great companion, and extremely reliable. The only thing that has been done, bar routine servicing, is the replacement of one coil pack, and it's looking like the front ARB might need doing soon.
My own car is coming up to 50k, which is a bit of a milestone for me. I don't think I've ever kept a car and done even half that before.
-

....Still installing cameras in VeeDub Transporters for hot girlies from lesbos?
PM your mobile and I'll make sure you're there when I'm next down that way. A nice blast along the coast road

....You're so right - It's such (true) stories which back up the whole reputation which genuine VW enthusiasts love so much :happy2:
So 50k probably feels like you've turned another 10-year threshold in the time you've been walkabout on this planet.
-
Yayyyyyyy!
Both are definite milestones Robin. When do you go in for a full service and tweaking then?
Seriously though I know you love the car and the camaraderie and it probably holds some magnificent memories for you too.
Robin without his Red GTI is like trying to imagine VW without a GTI.
-
yeah still working on the Transporters doing some nice bits and bobs at the mo have a look www.vanworx.co.uk (http://www.vanworx.co.uk)

Has Dave still got my original GTI seats?

Nice one RedRobin. Much respect :notworthy: :congrats:

....Regarding my human self, it's more a case of if it works don't mend it. Only female mechanics are allowed to work on me though.
:drinking: Cheers, John

Fantastic effort Robin :congrats:
Would be interesting to see how it fares over the next 100k :happy2:
-
Congratulations Robin :congrats:
It's nothing to get hung up on these days with our cars even less so with how much we look after them and renew / service parts!
One of the best modified MkV's for its purpose of giving smiles per gallon! Certainly wasnt looking that tired the other day.
Had JKM turned the boost back up already or was that a genuine direct benifit of the HPFP?

It is mate the last month it's been a life saver even had a kids quad in the back of it :signLOL:
-
I remember chatting with RR about how long he'd keep the car. This was when we were on the other forum. We were both impressed with our cars and I recall said he'd keep it to at least 100k. Glad to see you've enjoyed the last 100k and here's to the next 100 :drinking:
-
Just remembered robin... mines coming up for 50,000 miles :scared:
-
^^^^
What mileage are you up to now, Jaz?
Is your living, breathing thing a keeper too?
-
What a great partnership you and your GTI have formed Robin! :happy2:
Both seem to fit each others personality 100%!

....That's made me laugh  :happy2:. I'm not sure how to interpret that though!
I have heard said that a car reflects something about the owner. :drinking:
-
At 40k mate. Lovin' every minute. Paintwork needs a bit of TLC but otherwise sound. Heading to AKS for a midcycle oil change and checkup.
-
We sold the caddy back last year. We miss it tho and everyone loved the seats in it.
Yeah you must bring doggie treats for them tho lol.

Yep, my front wheel arches have rusted:

Getting the arches properly machine rolled on Monday and then restored and painted another day.
-
Nice one Robin, congratulations on both fronts, I'm hoping I'm still enjoying my cars as much as you when I get to your more mature years :happy2:

....I'm sure you will enjoy your cars just as much when you are more mature  - I was around the car racing scene in the 1960's - My interest hasn't waned. It gets in your blood! :happy2:
-
Wow, fantastic milestone Robin, there is a certain Volvo which is local to me which has the reg B19 RED and I always think of you when I see it. I hope you stick with the o'l girl as she has served you very well! :happy2:
-
Have you spoken to tommo in body shop about warranty on your arches. They repaired mine under warranty/goodwill they paid 70% but at least you know they will do a gd job
-

....Yes I went to see Tommo this morning but because my arches have already been modified they unfortunately wouldn't succeed in a warranty claim. He painted and fitted my carbon bonnet. Now that Heritage have taken over Loders they lost staff but Tommo got promoted. I've always got on well with Tommo and trust his work.
We had been thinking of painted carbon wings but just leaving 'GTI' exposed in carbon. It would look very cool but cost me more and I have to watch my spending more carefully than in the past.
I'm seeing Tommo on Monday morning so I'll give him your best regards, Dan :happy2:
-
Brilliant milestone that is Robin, 100K miles, fully expect I'll own my little white Ed30 for that long too, as I too bought it from new.
It feels like part of the family. I'll have it when Candy White is well out of fashion again..
One of your posts here mentioned cars reflecting their owners, can we deduce that means 'dirty' but running well with no fuel issues..
Here's to the next 400K miles.
-
that's great achievement Robin! :congrats:
I've never had a car longer then 30k km but never had such a great car as gti, so I might stick with it! Have 80k km at the moment
Paul
-
Congratulations Robin! :happy2:
My car is on 93K at the moment, and I've no fear of 100k, as my previous Golfs have all gone well in excess of this milestone. (I think my Mk2 16V was on around 210k when I sold it!) It's so important not to scrimp on servicing, and I'm going to follow your lead on oil and plug changes, especially as mine is now modified.
Also great advice for us new 'uns on the performance envelope, and being able to stop as well as go! I'm looking into my brake options since we spoke on Thursday.
-
Nice to see she just keeps getting better with age

good to see it's just run in Robin, congrats on both milestones, growing old disgracefully FTW :drinking:
-
Congrats on the milestone Robin and good to hear she's running well again.
I remember when I first got my GTI and I was searching for GTI's that had been colour coded to get an idea of what mine would look like, when I stumbled across the 1st pic below of your car with the ABT rear and Quad Milltek. I thought looked good but I thought a different rear bumper would make it look alot better. This got me researching and found this build thread of your car (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=76814.0) and the 2nd pic below with the R32 rear and I've wanted to do it to mine ever since. Hopefully if I'm happy with mine when she returns I will actually get round to doing it rather than talking about it :signLOL:
Your car and the passion you have for her has been an inspiration to me and no doubt alot of other people on here and various other forums and I hope you have just as much fun over the next 100k :drinking: Unless VW does release the MK7 RS

mines just about to hit 50k! pretty good and about right for an 07. I barely do any miles in mine, think I've only done around 3000 miles in the last year.
I'm abit skint at the moment and i'm not sure if my car needs a service, it had it's major service this time last year (Cambelt etc), about a week ago my dash started to say 5600 miles to service and then today it's saying Service Now!... :((. I can't afford it and it's not due in the book.

....Don't take too much notice of what your dash tells you - The dealer possibly set it up to give too much warning.
Check out your Handbook and make sure that biggies like Cambelt and DSG Oil (if applicable) are done. I think you go by the mileage rather than the time period, so at that rate you won't need another service for about 6 years!! I assume she's not performance modified.
Start a new thread and ask advice about it because I'm not 100% sure.

@ Nodz:
Gosh! That first pic of my car back then is pretty scary.
Here's the first pic ever:

^ Handover by salesman Jim Styrin (a karting champ and whose bro races in the VW Cup - No wonder I got a nice long test drive!).
I'm glad to hear that I've been such a bad influence!
-
Thats a great pic Robin, one of which I'm sure you'll treasure forever.
-
^^^^
Cheers, Rich :happy2:
Jim gave me my GTI baseball cap too. He now runs his own car sales business but many of the original staff are still at the dealers and I am on very good terms with them. Their affiliated bodyshop has just managed to get 100% warranty coverage on my rusting front wings! :pomppomp: :jumpmove: :pomppomp: :star:

Congratulations, Robin! You and your Red have taken each other on quite some journey over the past few years and here's to the next 100K for you both. I love everything about your car and find your relationship with it something of an inspiration :happy2: Paula xx
-
So, did you get a snap of the odometer then?

....Thanx Paula! It's always rewarding to know I have either inspired or helped someone. Hang on! How many years have you been stalking me to know about my journeys!?
I know it's she's only a machine but as stealthwolf says, some cars live and breathe. I think that modifying a car to suit you individually makes your car become more personal. I'll have to check out your posts to see what you have done so far - It's a slippery slope! But fun!
:happy2:

Congratulations on the Milestone! Only picked up my Golf a couple of months ago and promptly joined the forum, since then i have learnt much about my car and what is possible, which way to achieve it how to. Most mods I have, have come directly from your excellent reviews, so thanks. Hers to the next 100k
