Hey guys, noticed today that my 04 GT TDI which is remapped to 180BHPish has started to smoke quite abit to the extent that its noticeable in my side mirrors. It tends to happen most when in low gears starting off and when changing gears, i haven't noticed any loss in power. Really confused :(
Anyone had this before?
-
Who remapped it?
-
I think grey smoke is fuel vapour. Are you running a decat? :sad1:
-
It got remapped at Awesome GTI last year (thinking about getting it removed). Only thing ii've done to the exhaust is remove the rear back box about 2 months ago.
-
Are you getting smoke on startup? If so does it smell sweet? Check your coolant regularly. If you are getting through it then it could be a porous/cracked head. I had it and no noticeable loss of power. This is what I had
Dunno if that'll work as I'm on my phone.
Hope it's not that though as its pricey!

I think it might smoke on start up, not 100% i'll go out to check it and see if it smells sweet. The car has lost coolant once last year for no apparent reason but hasn't lost any since then. :sad1: I hope its not costly
-
Sounds like you need to get it checked. From what I was
Told it should not lose any. When the car has been stood overnight if you take off the coolant cap and hear a hiss then something's not right {iirc}. If your car is under 5years old and you have a good dealer they might do you a goodwill gesture. They paid for all parts for me I just had to pay labour.
-
Ahhh, I'll check the coolant hiss thing cos its been stood overnight without been driven. My cars on an 04 so isn't anywhere close to 5 years old. I've read about a guy over on edition38 who after having written to VW UK got a new cylinder head free of charge as its a big problem which hasn't been officially acknowledged. Hopefully I can get something similar done if it is that.
-
Just checked the coolant and it did 'hiss' and let some air out after being stood still overnight :( and the levels were slightly low so i've just topped it up! Anyone have rough ideas on how much it costs to replace the cylinder head if this is what is causing my problem.
-
Oh dear, well don't panic. Just be sure to only top up with the 'G' coolant from vw. They charged me £1000 for labour and I think parts were about £800 this all from VW. At first I just bought coolant and drove around with a coke bottle ready mixed though so you can do that as an option for a while. But start checking it every time you drive.
Contact VW an see if they are willing to help fight your corner for a goodwill gesture.
Good luck!
-
The coolant system is pressurised so will always hiss when you take the cap off
Any way the price of the head from VW is around £1200 plus your labour has Jibba said thing is its not just the head that will need replacement, you'll need a new head gasket, cambelt kit and water pump, new seals and bearings, oils and coolant.
It all adds up and if I was in your boots I would be getting rid  Ive just ended up paying out £1500 to have the cylinder head replaced, on another note it does sound like fuel vapour unused diesel, also rather than the head it could be the EGR cooler thats leaking coolant into the exhaust which will give you white vapour cheap fix.

Hey Darren thanks for your response.. i remembered reading a few months ago that you were having trouble with cylinder head! I did notice some liquid on the tips of the exhaust today when i went out to check if the car was still doing it.. so im hoping this is pointing out to the EGR problem and be an easy fix cos ive spent a lot of money on the car doing it up to how i want it  If it happens to be the Cylinder head then the car will be going for sure.. Fingers crossed though.

Have the EGR cooler taken off and check for damp, you'll know for sure then.
Darren
-
DOes anyone know the Labour prices i would be looking at to replace the EGR Cooler, the garage i took the car to said around £180?
-
Have you considered removing the EGR cooler? If you were to fit an EGR Delete pipe then I think the EGR cooler becomes redundant as well. Darren/MortiGTTDi removed his, possibly best getting advise from him regarding what you can all remove. This might fix you problem.

That smoke looks more blue to me !
How many miles has the turbo done ?
By the way, my 2004 GT 140 tdi is losing water as well, going to swap the egr cooler this weekend to see if it makes a difference - I'll keep you posted. My turbo (2nd one) is also now giving the siren noise but thats another story !
Never had these kind of problems with the 7 mk2 GTi's I used to have - that's modern VW's for you.
-
Yeah the smoke has turned more bluish now :( Vw said they'd charge me £90 to do a full diagnostics if I leave the car for a full day on Friday. Might do it to pinpoint out the exact cause. Toying with the idea of selling up even though I've spent so much on it. Can I ask how much the egr cooler cost you? Vw want £230 for one, apparently it's a dealer only part.
-
if its blue oil its burning oil--possible turbo failure

The OP has mentioned white smoke (water?) and now possible blue smoke (turbo failure, or could it be worn piston rings? That may only apply to petrols?)
Should I be worried if my car produces the odd amount of black smoke. It's a soot chucker  remapped and pushing somewhere in the region of 180-190 bhp. Little bit of smoke only when pushing hard, higher revs.
Sorry to the OP for going off topic, slightly. :happy2:
-
because mine did the same thing :P
-
Mmmmmmm £230 for a new cooler or £6 for a connector to delete the cooler??? Put it this way you do not need the EGR system at all it was only there same has the cat to lower emissions on the production line! I don't have any part of the EGR system or a cat and it flew through the MOT at VW Leeds.
If your thinking of replacing it then just pay your mechanic to take the cooler off altogether and get rid.
Darren
-
Hey Darren, could you PM me or just state on here what I'd need to do and what parts I'd need to do the EGR Cooler/system delete? Could be an option for me to take.
-
look for darrens build thread its in there
-
I'll try and get some better pics for you of where every thing is but if you look on Darkside developments webby you can see the specific parts you need.
Darren

Thanks guys, the help is much appreciated. I'll check it out :)

its a mod i will be doing when the car is out or warranty

Hello Gents,
Having similar issues with "Water loss" and i am also mapped up
No smoke as such, unless under load (black) id expect that from a Diesel. No turbo noise either. Would this EGR cooler be a good option then ?

Seems to be a pretty cheep fix :happy2:

Stevw1, it could be the cylinder head?
Does anyone know if the car is safe to drive if its the cylinder head, EGR Cooler or Turbo? I haven't used the car for a week now but my sister needs her BMW back so i'll have to drive it again. VW can't fit me in at all until end of next week..
-
Been driving my car with the head faulty for the last 3 years :happy2: the turbo not so much not good if you know for defo its going to bust at some stage soon. Egr cooler wont do any damage either it can drop coolant into the cylinders but it just burns off when you start the car.
Darren
-
Sorry to be a pain but the one last quick question.. Does anyone know of any good VW specialists in leeds/bradford? VW want £80 an hour i've been told to do diagnostics.
Also the car seems to be getting a bit more smokey.. smells almost like burning rubber (closest thing i can compared to )

Thanks for the invaluable information Darren, I'm really lost in what to do.. get rid or just repair. Dreadful time for it to all go wrong too.. Exam time at uni which means stress i don't need!
-
So i've had he car looked at.. My friend managed to get a VW Tech (JCT600 VW Bradford) to look at it for me and hook it up to the computer.. no faults showed up. He also said that
1. He doesn't think it will be the EGR Cooler as he's never seen one got on the older PD engines only the new cars
2. He doesn't think it's the turbo as that wouldn't smoke (But i thought it would?)
3. Needs a pressure test to see if the head has any visible leaks..
He told me to carry on driving it as normal as it shouldn't give me much problem if i keep the coolant topped up.
-
when my turbo went it was chucking out blue smoke
-
1. He doesn't think it will be the EGR Cooler as he's never seen one got on the older PD engines only the new cars
The EGR cooler is not a common part that goes but its the first and easiest thing to check if your losing water(other than the obvious leaks from pipes)
2. He doesn't think it's the turbo as that wouldn't smoke (But i thought it would?)
The turbo doesn't smoke much before it goes but once it blows it bellows thick blue smoke
3. Needs a pressure test to see if the head has any visible leaks..
You cannot do a pressure test to check for a porous head! it has to be left over night under pressure to see any discrepancies
-
Thanks for the replies guys, Darren i'm not sure i want to keep the car now.. seems to be costing me too much! Dont want to be repairing it and then next week something else crops up :( so i think i should just get shut of it even though i had many many more plans for it.
What do you guys think a fair trade in value would be? 2004 GT TDI, 70 000Miles with FSH. I really can't be botthered to get this car sorted.. once things go wrong on a car like it has on this you just lose love for it. :sad1: I've seen a cheap 2007 Astra 1.9 SRI 3 Door with low miles which i think would serve me well without much cost until i finish uni and get a good job. :chicken:
-
I'm in the same boat as you, 2004 GT tdi 140 losing water and siren turbo !
Mind you, changed the EGR cooler last weekend and it hasn't used a drop of water this week so fingers crossed ! Just got to sort the turbo.
I also thought of changing mine but the cars out there just don't compare to this one, i was thinking of a 1.4 TSI but less MPG, more road tax and having to shell out £3000+ for a cheap one changed my mind. Better the devil you know I supose so I guess it's new turbo time.....
Trade in value for mine on a £7k 1.4 TSI was around £3000-£3300 (FSH, 115000 miles standard spec). There's loads of GT's out there now from £4k at dealers with FSH and warranties !
Keep it and sort it !
-
i was in the same boat last year as i got a turbo fitted and for a month it was fine, then it started filling the turbo with oil again :fighting:went through 4 turbos luckly under warranty-fitted new engine breather but still the same.after the car had been away a while (4 months) they put another turbo on and rocker cover and it as sorted it out..

Andy, did they replace the whole rocker cover or just the gasket ?
-
you have to replace the whole rocker cover as the breather is moulded in to it,think they are £100 as well. You would of thought vw would of made it chaneable as its the only breather on the engine
-

Thats a silly design or not, depends how you look at it. £10 breather or £100 cover
-
in fact i had 2 so what would of cost say £20 for the breathers infact cost me £200 :signLOL:
-
To be honest Ajay the Astra is just has bad and personally Id rather be sat in a golf with a busted head than in the astra,
Don't get me wrong I used to be a griffin man for quite a few years then tried every thing else until I got into the golf and that's been it for over 5 years, When I get rid of this ill be back in a VAG car after I move house.
Keep it and run it, if it is a busted head it is not going to blow up just keep topping it up when it needs it and it'll be fine for has long has you have it.
Darren
-
I get what you mean Darren, i've seen a Seat Leon what i may check out tomorrow as well although the Golf smokiness seems to have subsided now :S I can hardly notice it when driving like i could before.
I'll have to wait to see what happens with this car..
Thanks for the advice, it's really appreciated! :drinking:
-
Seems the smoking issues could have been due to the remap Awesome GTI installed! It was overfueling a lot so it has been removed now! shall see how things go.
