Currently I own a stock K03 GTI, looking to buy another VAG towards the end of the year. Thought maybe an S3 but not a fan of the looks and prefer the Golf for some reason
Anyways I've been looking at Edition 30s & more recently R32s. Now I can't decide which one I'd prefer. From what I've read the ED30 will be the more balanced car and had more potential for tuning. Would assume it will be more fuel efficient driven sensibly. Not sure how much MPG to expect from it tho? Same as a normal K03?
The R32 would defo sound better and have more grip in the wet, although I've read up the R32 isn't permanent 4WD and the rear wheels only come into action when the car starts to lose traction? How much MPG could I expect from the R32 around town driven sensibly, considerably less than an ED30?
Any opinions would be good especially from people who have owned both

I posted a topic on this not so long ago - loads of opinions. As I was ??? as to why people go for ED30 over GTI's and ED30's over R32's and so on.
Well worth a read!

if you're gonna do engine mods - Ed30
if you're keeping it standard - R32 (with Recaros)

Haha, they're both great cars & if I did go for an ED30 it would be stage 1 and a few suspension mods. That's it
If it was an R32 would be great to get one with Recaro's and Nav.
Not sure which one looks better, prefer the front end of the ED30 especially with Xenons but prefer rear of R32
Also for a 3.2V6 250PS isn't much, not much more power to be had either

If you want more power from the VR6 then you'll have to get a full exhaust with high for cats and a remap. You'll looking at not much change from 2000quid and maybe 15-20bhp increase max.

When down the same route but keeping the diesel now as I ave been told to :signLOL:
-
I had the exact same thoughts just recently
Always wanted a R32 but I ended up buying a ed30
I work at a Vw dealer so get to drive / work on both alot .
If you buy a R32 your pretty much stuck with stock power unless you have deep pockets and go down turbo route, ed30 is easily tuneable for alot less ££ and IMO ed30 is much more fun to drive
Plus most mk5 R,s are in the expensive road tax bracket and are terrible on fuel/MPg
-
I averaged 26 in the R32. Currently getting 30 in the Ed30.... however in the R32 I used to start work early and finish late i.e. no traffic so used never used to hang around. Most of my journeys in the ed30 a during slightly busier if not peak times.
The faster car.... R32 imo
Cheapest to mod... ED30 no question
More fun... R32 imo
Better looking... ED30 front R32 back
Value... both have seen prices come down alot recently, but dont overlook the free extras you get in the R32/Ed30
If you can afford the extra cost of the R... then its the one to go for :happy2:

Thanks for the replies. Still unsure tho :stupid:
Always had a soft spot for R32s and I keep convincing myself the sound of the 6pot will make up for the lack of tuning ability, but still not sure. R32s do seem to come with a better spec & also seem to be going that bit cheaper!
Think the best option is get a test drive of both.... Or just buy an M3
What's the GTIs weight VS R32?
-
R32UK, you say the R32s more exciting? U put that down to handling or due to 2 extra cylinders?

he's in a very small minority :signLOL: in this forum anyway :popcornsoda:
200 kilo's inc a part time trick haldex.. Oh and it grips roundabouts at break neck speed if that's your thing.
2 totally different cars, as has been said, drive both, but your buying the wrong car if it's mpg you want.
-
I've had both a R32 and Edition 30, so ask away. You really need to test drive both though

Which one did u prefer and why? Also in and around town. Both driven the same. How much more mpg did the ED30 get?
-
Got to be the Edition 30.
Only get the R32 if the V6 noise is THE most important thing on your check list, only other real plus point is the traction but the plus points on the ED30 far outweigh those points.

I like cornering at break kneck speeds  will defo look into a test drive for both. I know I got an ED30 tho it would be straight to stage 1 engine software
Not too concerned about mpg, would be happy with mid 20s in town and around 30s on the motorway. Doubt id get it tho especially with a 6pot for vocals
-
Well mine at stage 2 will cruise at 35 mpg at 70mph. Motorway cruise there won't be that much difference. Around a town centre or busy commute routes, in the R will be more painfull.
-
I'd choose the Ed30 all day long. The scope for tuning is massive, whereas a REVO remapped R32 makes a paltry extra 15 bhp, and 250 bhp is not a lot for the extra weight over an Ed30. Having test driven a R32, I can safely say that my K03 Stage 1 GTi is comfortably quicker, if not from the lights, but hopefully I'm growing out of the traffic light Grand Prix! £500 on Stage 1 for an ED30, and you're close to 300bhp!
The noise of a V6 is intoxicating, I had a V6 4Motion with a Milltek and that sounded amazing. However, It wouldn't be enough to sway me.

You pays your money.....
Save some more pennies and in a couple of years buy an R for 15-20k, problem solved!

Depends on the type of roads you drive, for me to work and back the R32 was doing around 30mpg and the ED30 does 34/35mpg, but the ED30 will come into it's own cruising on dual carriageways / motorways when the MPG gets into the late 30s.
The main reason I prefer the ED30 is the power delivery, I prefer the surge of boost/torque rather than having to work the engine. The fact that a Stage 1 remap drastically increases it is a great bonus.
Around town I wouldn't say there's any difference really, the R32 has a lot more presence and will turn more heads. Even the standard exhaust sounds fantastic!

R32UK, you say the R32s more exciting? U put that down to handling or due to 2 extra cylinders?
I put it down to handling and the ability to get the power down early. Also there is the low down torque.. which I prefer much more than the .... wait for it... wait for it... turbo style. As said the R32 is much easier to drive quicker and more like a GT, where as the GTI is more hot hatch-ish.
I like some of the other have had an R32, ED30, and mapped mk6 gti so feel happy to offer advice on any.. there is so little in them in the way of performance it just came down to driving pleasure, I found the ride of the R32 better than the GTI/ED30, but again very little in it.
When I first went to VW to view the GTI they had a brand new R32 parked outside, when I asked the saleman to show me it before I signed up for the GTI I had no intention of getting one. All it took was one blip of the throttle.... and I was sold
-
It depend if you are thinking of tuning it too..it will cost mega bucks to tune a r32,u talking about 5k+ for a turbo kit
-
Both nice cars in their own right, for me tho it would have to be the R32..
-
If you want sound go R32, if you want speed go Ed30, simples
