Just been into Wicked Wheels in Guildford, who used to send them off to Lepsons, and the guy I spoke to in there said they've stopped doing it, as they had so many problems with corrosion coming back so quickly, and failed lacquer leading to more corrosion. These problems tended to re-occur in months rather than years. They also offer no warranty, and the spokes are too thin to allow more than 2 refurbs and retain the structural integrity of the wheel.
It's not just kerbing that's the problem. The potholes around here make Guildford roads look like the surface of the moon.
At over a hundred a corner, I'm beggining to wonder if I should just get some new wheels without this issue, especially as refurbing with diamon finish seems to be an expensive temporary fix. And I wouldn't want these wheels with any other finish TBH.
Now I quite fancy gloss black cross-spokes with a silver rim.....
-
I've seen guilford roads mate they're a nightmare, along with the rest of surrey and kingston!!
my monzas need a refurb too and this diamond finnish just seems too much money for something that not stay perfect for very long due to white worm etc. you considered just getting them done a different colour? I'm debating getting them done in black or even a smokey chrome kind of colour.
-
Shadow chrome?
-
Mine have just started to white worm again a year after having them done at A1. As long as the car comes back fine then I'm going to get them done again.
Cheaper than getting these BBS I keep looking at:

Not for me Samdem. These wheels are all about the diamond finish for me. I can see them going in the loft until I sell the car. :sad1:

Did someone mention Smoked Chrome?

^ They tend to look different colour in different light. Although they are in storage I can't bring myself to sell them.
A1 Wolverhampton refurb diamond-cut Monzas but use the thicker Aston Martin clear lacquer. Still costs around 100 squid per corner though.

Its a big bill to get every year though! £500.00! I just can't justify that. If it was a one off, or lasted 3 years say, I'd do it, but it's just gonna keep happening. And it would be nice to be able to take it somewhere local for a cheap fix if you did get forced into the kerb my a lady who can't see over the steering wheel of her Volvo XC90!

....Did A1 use the Aston Martin clear lacquer and they still didn't last a year? :surprised:
-
yeah thats fair enough, I'm still up in the air with what i want to do really.. i can't afford to fork out for new wheels so I'm going to have to do something
you may have just answered your own question

But even A1 refurbs are lasting about a year though Robin. How much would the smoked chrome be per corner, if you don't mind me asking?
-
they look the nuts! do they do different shades? i might go a little bit darker if they do.

....Are you asking me? - If so, the answer is that I expect Nigel at A1 can do.
-
:ashamed: sorry yeah, they look really nice. A1s
quite veery out the way for me, ill have to try somewhere more local.

....Only a year!!? That's NOT good!
IIRC mine cost me £400 for the 4. They're powdercoated.
-
Ive just sent mine off today to be powered coat black and then diamond cut face. Costing me £360 with postage etc
They get cleaned once a week and i will keep an eye on the laquer, hopefully they will last more than a year as i have winter tyres too.
Its the diamond cut monza that make the GTI in my opinion but saying that the shiny silver passat alloys on my car now look quite good
-

I had mine done this time last year at A1. But as the car was loaded onto the transporter this afternoon I noticed white worm around the centre badge and wheel bolts, It was quite bad around one of the rear wheels. Whether its because I haven't been washing them as often due to not having time over the past few months I'm not sure but its only appeared over the past 2 weeks tops.
Need to arrange to get them sorted when I get the car back a I can't live with them like it and the sooner they get looked at the better. Might even arrange to leave the car up that way and let one of the pro's off here detail it ready for the summer.

I totally agree, but I don't go down the winter/summer tyre route, so need something more durable that isn't gonna come with a yearly maintenance bill of 500 pounds!
-
Just sent a set of Focus ST alloys in for refurb, paint, diamond cut £70 per wheel
Wheels collected yesterday, they will be back on my doorstep friday.
Quality is amazing, the company I use do alot of BMW wheels for me

Were they fully protected and waxed prior to going on the car?
-
Not when they went on as they just finished being refurbed, when I got home I washed, waxed etc and kept on top of it religiously but the past few months due to work and stuff not had time to wash the car properly just had a quick wash here and there so this has probably contributed to it, another expensive lesson learnt lol

....This is what irritates me about the white worm problem - We simply shouldn't have to religiously clean our wheels nearly every week. Monza 18's look good but real-life practicality has been sacrificed. Design isn't just about aesthetics, and as a professional designer (now retired) it has actually put me off liking the lacquered diamond-cut finish!

I'd like to know what really causes this "White Worm"?
My Monzas are a few years old now and have been on through allsorts of weather! Never had any trace of WW.
Surely the Italian Reps are finished the same as the factory Monza's?

....I'm gonna hazard a guess and suggest that once chipped, the seal of the lacquer is broken and consequently moisture and UK road salts (famous for being corrosive) then attack the lacquer. This is why the damage is *only* surface and not structural. Its spreading tends to support my theory.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fb308%2FRedRobin_05%2FWhiteWorm.jpg&hash=d65127db3f0c0a18f5735411e7082c4b0cae9c93)
^ You can see how it spreads organically :sad1:
If this is the case, then why can't BBS produce a lacquer which doesn't suffer from this? Whatever the cause, I think that BBS hollowed out their brains when they evolved their special Hollow Technology for the Monza wheel.
-
WOW that looks awful.
I think an Ultra-super-duper Hard lacquer needs inventing!
-

....Well you would have thought that a lacquer used by Aston Martin would be up to the job but apparently not!
Yep, I couldn't afford to refurb at the time because I spent heavily on Quaife diff and KW V3 suspension, so had to wait. Folks couldn't understand why I left the white worm so long but I much prefer go to show and once I learnt it wasn't structurally damaging to the alloy wheel I wasn't bothered.
-
So whats the best wheel wax to give it a bit more protection ? Also i need a good cleaner for the tyre sidewalls as it has a few white pen marks on from a previous owner. I want to do the best i can before they go back on the car. I cant afford a refurb ever year as been suggested

To be honest, mine are doing this slightly  which i think has been caused by the centre caps damaging the laquer
A bit of the black paint has peeled off the rim too :surprised:
It will be paint or powdercoat when they get really bad but they should do another year or so. Just goes to show whatever you try to do, Diamond cut is not a long term solution . . . .
So go on Robin, im waiting for the "I TOLD YOU SO" :P

Actually, much as I love and now prefer my Smoked Chrome powdercoated Monza 18's which haven't been out of storage since October 2009, I really do wish that the lacquered diamond-cut finish was more durable and more practical for those of us who drive more than we detail. In other words, I don't revel in other's white worm problems. However....

Absolutely Robin, I couldn't agree more. Having learnt a lot about my wheels over the past 6 months on here, I have come to the same conclusion. They have been designed because they look amazing in the showroom and help to sell the car, and little thought has gone into the longevity of the wheel. As such I'd say they're not fit for purpose, and VW should take some responsibility for this. Has the forum ever put any pressure on VW in the past over this?
-
They guarantee them for the 1st 3 years from new and will replace them under warranty as long as there's no kerbing etc but after that they don't want to know iirc
-

....Yep, and not just this forum. The problem is common to all marques of cars which have this finish.
Volkswagen (I don't know about others) have in some cases replaced FOC Monza's but only if they haven't been able to claim that the owner hadn't kerb'd or damaged them first - They have wriggled and there have been a significant number of claims. You would have thought that they would have dropped the finish for the Mk6, but oh no they haven't :stupid:
However, there are folks, some on here, who religiously clean their wheels more often than might be described as 'normal' and they haven't had the problem. Greeners is one, for example.
Like you say, it's a very attractive feature which can sell the car.

I guess that's fine If you've had from from new, but I haven't, and it would seem that once the WW is in the alloy, it's just a matter of time before it comes back post-refurb. I also don't want to have to worry obsessively over cleaning them, and be constantly inspecting them. Wasted driving time IMO! :driver:
I'm admitting defeat and am going to either get new rims that will fit my new tyres or get these refurbed and powdercoated. Life's too short!

Robin's thread inspired me to get mine powdercoated in smoked chrome, and I don't regret it for a moment. I love the 18" Monzas and the fact that they're not just any old alloys, but a feature of the Golf GTI.
I'm told that my wheels really catch the light as the car moves, but I'm not letting anyone else drive it so I'll never know!
-
SCR show us a pic!
Must say I don't have the time to clean and wax wheels all the time....though the original finish looks amazing!!!
-
I've needed to get mine refurbed for the last 2 years not got round to it yet the idea of getting them back to the proper anthracite diamond cut would be the ideal but the longleivity and change in sharp edges due to extra material cut off worries me and will be going powder coat and smoked chrome seems good as robin has done but will all be down to tne colour the specific refurber uses!
Ian if you do something local ask them if there is a deal to be done for 8 wheels would have to be drive in drive out.

Will do Rich, I'm going to start looking into this when back from my romantic driving weekend! When you say drive in, drive out, do you mean leaving the car there for a day or two whilst they do it?

Most wheel finishers told me that they couldn't guarantee an even and sharp join line between face and insert colours and were very reluctant to do it.
-
would also love to see a side on pic of them on your car!
-
I wouldn't have a diamond cut rim on any of my cars... Unless...
They are factory fresh wheels i.e. a refurb company has not done the diamond cutting/powder coating. Most of these wheel refurb companies won't entertain the idea of a warranty with diamond cut wheels. Thats just down the fact diamond cut wheels WILL get white worm very quickly. They are so so delicate and on the wheels its asking for trouble.
Now, on some factory finished wheels from the likes of BBS/speedline etc... they are doing thousands of wheels at a time which changes the landscape of the plant they're painting them in. They have a much better environment to be painting wheels in, and with that comes much higher quality finishes. Thats my idea on why BBS/ OEM diamond cut wheels last 3-4 years without white worm rather than 3 months to 18 months you'd normally see a refurbished diamond cut wheel lasting without white worm.
If a customer comes to me and asks for diamond cut wheels, I always explain this and tell them there is no warranty. 8 times out of 10 they will do for a full powered coat or wet paint finish. ;)
-
I suppose I told a little bit of a fib... they took my wheels and treated to remove the existing finish... can’t remember if they chemical dipped or blasted them... then powder coated the whole wheel gloss black then masked off sprayed with the smoked chrome and a lacquer finish over the top...
If I remember it was £100 a corner...
however this all came about as in an emergency and having a dumb moment I called in with a flat to kwik fit and asked for two new front tyres. First time round they did a decent job however put the wrong tyres on, second time round rushed the job and damaged both front wheels round the bolt holes and a couple of random scratches... they initially told me that’s how I brought it in... until I mentioned they were fine when I walked the store manager round the car... There was then a small battle between myself and the local area rep who in the end decided they would pay to have all 4 of them redone with a small contribution from me.
Originally the wheels were to be black inserts with a silver chrome finish to look as close to the diamond cut as possible. The wheel guys had 4 attempts at getting it right and still managed to get it wrong... they had issues with masking round the inserts as the tape really doesn’t like the powder coating so a couple of attempts at that then went to pick the car up on the final attempt and they had sprayed them smoked chrome instead of silver chrome... got in the car drove away and told the guy to get his boss to call Monday to sort all this crap out and no one ever followed it up... Think they were just glad to see the back of me to be honest as it was a bigger job than they originally thought with all the masking etc…
It’s taken a while but I have come round to really liking them… but then again I have no choice without forking out ££££
-
Can I ask which firm did the work Chowgar? And any chance of a side on pic of the wheels on the car please?
Thanks,
