£100k would be life changing for me. Pay off a couple of remaining debts and buy a lovely house for the wife and myself to enjoy with about £50k on a deposit. Mortgage the rest. I would put whatever I had left into savings and try to invest in oil stocks as and when.

Sensible head - pay off the mortgage. That's a higher interest rate than I'd get from most investments at the moment. If you've already taken care of that, a terraced house (or maybe even two with a small mortgage) in a university town.
What a great position to be in!

I'd remortgage my current house, which should release about £100k.
That gives me £200k in total, which I would then put down as a deposit towards a bigger house, I want 4 bedrooms as a minimum.
I would then put my current house on rent.
Hence I would have my new house, and have my current house as an investment - since it's a 3 bed house with garage, and a primary school, playground for kids, and bus stop into town literally 45 seconds walk from the house, I should get a small family as tenants pretty easily, who are more likely to settle for a longer period of time.
Well that's my goal for 5 years from now anyways, whether I have the spare £100k or not!

I'd pay off the magority of our mortgage which would leve us martgage free in circa 5 years.
Then engoy the benifits of being mortgage free at <40 :happy2:
As said, £100k realy isn't a great amount these days. Try adding up your anual house hold income and see how long it would take to make £100k??

You can have £30k of Premium Bonds and see where that takes you.
I got 2 x £25 wins last month which is more than I'd have got in interest.

....A good principle but would £100k really be enough to even buy a small terrace house to renovate? You must live up north somewhere to even consider that as financially viable. You might need deeper pockets to be able to continue when it's discovered that the house might need something more structural - Not uncommon and often an unknown until you start taking a building apart.

invest in a student property methinks. get something rundown, £80k deposit, £20k to do the place up and add bedrooms and either rent or sell on for a profit

Assuming you are comfortable as you are in your house / with your mortgage etc I would spend it on something amazing like a holiday (well, more than one) or an experience like that that you couldn't do at the moment. Presumably you've already got the mundane stuff like house covered so spend it on something completely hedonistic. Maybe a small chunk away as a rainy day fund.
Are you happy with your current job? If not a good opportunity to set yourself up a small business or go back to uni without having to worry about the financial implications of taking time of work.

What you want to do is sell cheap s**t to people. Look on the high street, over the last couple of years the big gains have been made by companies like Poundland, Wilkinsons, Savers, Primark blah blah blah. We even have some of these shops here in Sussex (what is the world coming to!).
That aside.........
Buy to let, with your 100k you should be able to get 4-5 cheap properties, each with a decent deposit, do them up to a very basic standard and rate them to the council who pay reasonable rates and the houses go to the feckless unwashed. Well that's what my Brother in Law now does for a living, there really is a lot of money in it!!

Well,I've just managed to pay off the last remnants of my mortgage this year (bloody endownement policy...grrr :fighting:)
so with £100k burning a hole in my pocket,I thin k I would spunk half of it on a MK1Cosworth engined Ford Escort Mexico and waste the rest on 100 octane race fuel...... :laugh:

Well i've been in this position but I have to admit I haven't spent it wisely and wish I had but never mind, I have what I consider a nice collection of cars, some invested (£20k), a huge deposit on my house and enjoyed a nice but still cheap holiday, lived my daily life without worrying about money. I could have handled it differently/better but it's kept me and the family happy and will be paying for the wedding n buying my partner her first car too. I hate having money, just because I struggle to be sensible with it :(

I'd buy a house in a village location probably. I reckon I've got around £300K equity in my place, so a £400,000 deposit and a small mortgage on top should get me summat half nice...

No I dont live up north currently (Live in Norfolk currently but moving to cornwall in Sept/Oct) but I am from up north originally :happy2:
I was using myself as an example as im the the process of buying my grandmothers house to renovate (She has recently moved to a Home that caters for Alzheimers, but 7 years ago I promised her that I would buy the house and renovate it myself as she did not want someone outside our family making money on "Her" property :love:).
So true to my word im buying it and renovating it as a buy to let, it will form part of my retirement fund (in 25 years :happy2:).
I think over the long term its hard to beat buying a property and renting it out, yes of course there are risks (But there are risks in ANY investment) but as long as you do your homework and your income can cover the mortgage should it be empty for a while then its well worth it. I am lucky in that I learnt a lot from my parents about buying and renovating property from a young age me and my brother spent time after school and at weekends knocking down walls, filling skips, painting etc etc Happy days! :drinking:

Yes, once upon a time in the 1980's I bought the freehold of the studio next to mine in Chelsea. It cost the best part £100k. We couldn't afford to live in it at first and so rented it out.... To well-known actress Jenny Agutter :love:

Bet if I watched either now I would be disappointed so I will not ruin the illusion and leave them to memory. Jenny was filming 'American Werewolf in London' at the time I knew her. She later went back across the pond to America and I haven't seen her since her return and marriage. I only knew her for about 6 months but am very fond. We instantly connected and I didn't feel in awe of her fame at all.
Both GREAT films in my book, probably have to be a certain age to appreciate them nowadays. Bet if I watched either now I would be disappointed so I will not ruin the illusion and leave them to memory. God she was sexy, 25 years ago I would have used that 100k for an "indecent proposal" with her (would have been only 15 myself though).
