Title: S3 VS ED30
Post by: Black9 on April 21, 2012, 07:31:36 pm
Been looking at S3's recently, they have 265 compared to the Golfs 230! Pretty certain they use same k04 turbo and both have strengthened engine internals over normal 200 golfs. So how do they have more power? Is it higher boost pressure and what's the weight difference between the 2? In terms of handling how Does the ED30 match up to the S3?

Sorry for another similar post

There's probably very little in terms of handling between the two (what the 4WD gives the extra weight will no doubt take).

The difference between the two is pretty much just the state of tune. They both map to similar figures with the same hardware

Externally I think the S3 is a nicer, but the Mk5 has a nicer interior and RNS510 is better than RNS-E.

It's swings and round abouts over which you choose really. If you live somewhere snowy I'd get an S3. Otherwise I'd save the money, get an Ed30 and spend the rest on mods.

:signLOL: sarcasm noted, you clearly know an ED30 is quicker than an R32 in all but monsoon conditions (17bhp and 4WD does not make up the 200KG) and DSG is just better full stop  :signLOL:

I was gonna say just buy a Golf R but remembered you can buy a used 996, 3 bedroom semi in Leeds and have enough left over for a round the world Club class ticket on BA for the same money..

The S3 has different cams and a bigger intercooler.  I think apart from that its identical engine wise.

But you also get bigger brakes as well.

If your modifying the car then i think S3 is the way forward.  1-Its got traction so your not having to waste money on semi slick tyres and an LSD.  2- You wont need to buy an Intercooler and bigger brake setup so thats nearly a £1000 difference there straight away.

The best person to speak to is GazbutS3 tbh, hes had the GTI, Ed30 and S3 iirc

Same cams just intercooler is smaller on the ed30

Same engines but ED30 has not got the extra 150kg of 4WD to lug around  :happy2:

.
If someone is serious about the S3 vs Ed30, the only real way to make the choice is to have a long test drive in each, back-to-back on the same roads. Then go for the one you individually prefer.

Now, if we are talking modified R32's................

150KG for 4WD,  . That alone would sway me to the ED30, do Audi increase the boost pressure to make an extra 35bhp over the Golf? They both use the same cams, only the Rad is bigger in the S3?

Boost and fuelling, they both re-map to almost the same figures give or take about 5hp

Is there anyway to verify if the cams are differant?

....Now that's a very old chestnut and has been fiercely debated ever since the Ed30 was launched. With very convincing yays and nays.

ETKA?

....ETKA was used as one of the confirmations before. But such info was deemed to be unreliable IIRC. Folks who had physically taken the engines apart etc.

i can't see the vag group making any changes to a car in the range that has the engine fitted as it would be down to cost so its cheaper to leave the engines as is and just put them in any car model they want if you ask me

So unless I'm going high power I'm as well saving 150kg and some £££ and going for an edition 30. How much could I expect from a stage 1 car with air filter!?

I was Told By Jabbasport to expect around 310bhp with custom remap, TBE exhaust and intake system

Now I just need to find an ED30, difficult to find well priced/low mileage examples with Xenons, SatNav and Highline. Would Like a DSG but a fail mechatronics unit makes me

Failed mech's are less likely now, as most in warranty failures would of been sorted. if you purchase from a dealers, then your warranty within purchase period would cover it.

A manual worn clutch failure is less likely to be covered on a 2nd hand car.

My 08 plate Candy ED30 mechantronics were replaced under warranty the week before I bought it and also came with a 3 year warranty on the box  :happy2:

Buying a DSG is not to be worried about if its been looked after.

More like 100kg as S3 kerb weight is 1450kg Ed30 appears to be around 1350kg depending on where you look - 1357kg was highest value I found during a quick search.

It's a tough choice however, Quattro in the wet is impressive.

I am led to believe the newer CDL code engines (found in the recent facelift cars) have a different intake cam compared to the previous S3 which had the same intake cam.
