Title: Anyone else got their standard GTI faster than quoted top speed?
Post by: homesqueeze on April 22, 2012, 05:57:07 pm
Hi. Just wanted to know what top speed people have got from an unmodified GTI. The quoted top speed is 146mph, however I have been faster than that. I'm not trying to show off, I just wondered if this is normal and what speed it's really capable of. When driving my 05 GTI on a German Autobahn I got the speedo to 160mph before I ran out of road. I know they aren't entirely accurate and my sat-nav was showing more like 150mph, but that's still more than the manufacters claim. My car was quite well laden at the time aswell. Will it go faster? Please share your experiences! :driver:

Speedo over read right thro the range, thats why the police dont look twice if your doing 85 on the motorway because your true speed is prob about 75, satnavs dont read 100% either this is due to the way they work speed out, so your 160 was more likely 140 maybe less, about a year ago i drove my car on a closed runway and had my speedo read 140, with more to go if i had the room, thing is it was more like 120

speedos and satnavs are to be trusted, mybe im about to show my age, but it makes no difference if your car can do 200mph the max limit is 70 for a reason

On a trip to Austria 3 years ago (via germany) I saw an indicated 161mph (sat Nav read 151mph) in my Mk4 1.8T which was re-mapped stage 1 (203bhp), officiual top speed for std car is 134mph i think.

Stage 2+ Ed30 on german autobahns have shown nearly 300kmh (187mph)

i struggle to believe that. some contemporary Ferraris with more power, less weight and a more aerodynamic shape were hitting those sorts of speeds.

It takes about 250bhp to get a car to 150mph. You may get away with a little less power than that if the car has a slippery shape.  :nerd:

Try youtube there are loads of them on there, speedo showing 187mph means approx 170mph really

True the limit is 70mph is in this country, but i'm talking about driving when i'm in Germany. In the right place there is no limit for a reason, perfectly safe if your a responsible driver!

Having driven through Germany several times there are quite a few Unrestricted roads where its safe to cruise at 130mph  :happy2:

Unrestricted Autobahn somewhere near Trier, it eventually ran up to 174 but it was super hot outside (26'c) and after about 6 miles i was starting to worry about high temps and the tyres so called it a day  :happy2:

I have had 157mph in my standed Ed30.
I think the quoted top speed is 151 so probably about right.

Comparing both Road Angel and PogoAlert dedicated GPS speedos against the Mk5 GTI's OEM speedo, I have found that 100 mph on the VW speedo is 87 mph on either GPS system. The difference decreases/increases proportionally.

My max is 143 mph on the GPS with passenger and luggage.

The K03 GTI tends to start to struggle accelerating from about 135 mph upwards and begins to feel much lighter! It'll comfortably cruise all day on a German autobahn at 125-130 mph.

....The reason being that some stupid cow in the government many decades ago threw a wobbly because she didn't understand a car (AC Cobra) being tested late at night down the M1 at over 150 mph. Knee jerk reaction and one which we've had to pay for ever since.

Last year it was rumoured that the NSL was going up to 80 mph, but when?

:signLOL:, When I lived in Singapore me and my mates took a biking trip from Singapore up through Malaysia into thailand, it was a good laugh, I was on my R1, my mate Brendan was on his Fireblade and Simon was on his Ducati (he had more money than us  ), so cruising along the Malaysian motorway at 90mph we get buzzed by some locals on CBR600's so we wind on the throttle to catch them up, we eventually catch them and pass them (far too easily) and decide as its a clear road we would see what speed we could get  :scared:, well I saw 170mph on my R1 and that was quick enough for me and I slowed down, we eventually grouped back up again a few miles down the road and thats when i see blue lights behind us (A Kia police car  ), we all pull over and this copper is going ape waving his arms, threatening us all with jail and court and the like, saying its taken him 8 miles to catch us up  :innocent:....., my mate Brendan pipes up.. How much officer?

Copper says 100 ringit each (about £30) we tell him we dont have that sort of cash on us, we have £10 between us in our walletts, coppers says slow down and leave...

We pull over at the next fuel station to fill up and we all reach down into our boots and get the rest of our cash out and then slip another 10 ringgit note into each of our wallets before we set of again  :signLOL: :signLOL: :signLOL:

We got stopped 3 times on that trip and gladly paid our £3 fine each time  :happy2:

IN Singapore you would get whipped and/or sent to prison for that along with a fine of about £5000, but in Malaysia where coppers supplement their income with speeders its a different world  :signLOL:
