Title: LED Downlighters GU10 & MR16 best place to buy???
Post by: Thor on April 22, 2012, 09:23:54 pm
Ok,  the house we've just bought has many downlighters in the kitchen, 8 No. GU10 50W and 8 No. MR16 35W bulbs.  I am thinking of changing these to LED's as from reading around it will save a fair bit of electricity.

Be grateful for commnets and experience people have had with LED lights and where you purchased them from/ approx costs etc.

Thanks  :happy2:

That always used to be the trouble with LED's, the intensity, however you would think with the advancement of LED car lighting they would be able to apply the same technology to indoor lighting.

I use 9W LED GU10s that i get from work, will have a look who makes them in the morning as i have a box full in the back of my van  :happy2:

They have got better over the years and the 9W version we use gives off a good amount of light and due to them being 3 x 3W CREE Leds the beam angle is getting close to the performance of halogen GU10s imo..

Pretty pricey though as they are £16 each to us with discount and we buy thousands of the things!

Osram have just started selling some decent warm white LED gu10 an mr16 in b and a and are dimmable  aswell but cost over £25 each. Phillips have started doing the same aswell but can only get them through wholesalers.

The older style LED's are not all that good IMO and your better off sticking to the normal halogen ones until the price of the decent led ones drop.

I'm in a similar situation in that I moved into a new house last year which has 14 MR16 downlighters in the kitchen and 12 GU10's scattered between the bathrooms and utility room.  I bought 12 50w GU10 equivelent SMD's from ebay which were allegedly warm white / halogen type very similar to the ones above however the light they give off is a much cooler light and not quite as bright as halogens.  They are acceptable in 'utility' areas and of course much cheaper to run so I've kept them but don't expect a like for like halogen replacement.

I've sh*t canned my ideas to replace the downlights in the kitchen on the back of this.  You do have to spend big bucks to get true halogen equivelents.  Also bear in mind that you will have to replace the MR16 transformers to LED drivers or convert them to 240V bulbs as the transformers used for the halogen MR16's will most likely fry the LED's.  Some do and and some don't but you dont know until you try...

I would avoid them eBay ones, had loads of them fail with a few LEDs on each lamp failing and they don't give out the right sort of light, they are more for decorative lighting more than anything and I would still be hesitant to use them for that.

Unfortunately to light the room properly with LEDs you need to spend then money.

As for transformers most are compatible with the halogen ones where as some require drivers. I believe most now have circuitry in the lamp to allow them to use normal halogen ones but always read the lamp spec before taking a chance

Ive fit some of these to shops and some in the house they are by far the best ive seen but come at a high price http://www.energysavingled.com/led-bulbs/59/7W-V6-LED-Spot-GU10-Twist-and-lock-fitting-

Beam angle and light output is eqivelent to a 50w halogen unlike 99% of leds that claim they are but arnt. They also use the latest cree chips and not the old smd stuff. If your not happy just send them back for a full refund simples.
