hi guys, i am new on here, just purchased my mk5 gt tdi a few days ago and getting my head around all the controls, i have a nav unit in the car with cruise control, i wanted to ask what was the best way to get the maximum mpg out of the car? what speed should i drive? should i also go into economy mode? i bought the car to travel to and from work and cover 50 miles a day so i want to get the best mpg possible, thanks for taking time out reading this and please reply with some advice. syd

The search function is your friend :happy2: lots of threads to read up on here from previous discussions. :happy2:

I drove my 2.0 tdi (plus a remap) with 139,000 miles on it on Monday 125 miles , 60 miles motorway the rest were "A" roads a got 59 mpg , well happy , 60-70 mph on the motorway then 60 mph on the minor roads , driving was boring BUT Eco :happy2:

A Warm Welcome to the forum, ibrardad! Ok, Syd is easier to write!
If you have the DSG version, drive in D-mode and the gears will be selected for maximum economy. I have cruise control but never use it (I hate stuff like that) and I assume it might help mpg.
-
Oooo Robin. I love cruise control, i use it loads

....That's because you are a cruiser. I've spotted you around the red light district of Mayfair.
We each have our own preferences. Nothing wrong with CC but it's just that I don't like not being in complete control of all my driving decisions. I only use D-mode in town or traffic queue crawl.

C'mon. Are there no more Diesel willy-wavers stating how we can get 50 or 60+ mpg. Disappointing. As said above, this has been done to death in numerous other threads. Search Button is there for a good reason. Altho sometimes Google advanced search is better. :happy2:

.
Bear in mind that the OP ibrardad/Syd is a newbie, folks.
Anyway, I thought that diseasal willy's were too small to wave
Joking apart, the Golf Mk5 TDI with DSG I have driven is a very good car and not to be sniffed at. I expect that the GT is even better but haven't driven one - I've had a few challenging me to 'race' though but I avoid getting involved. I started to increase my speed away from a GT once and then noticed small blue light units in its grill so I stopped that and just held around 70 (dual carriageway). He came past and I then noticed it was a Fire Service car but not red and no big markings or roof light unit.

Sorry, welcome newbie. I'm sure it says somewhere in the rules/intro/somewhere else to use the search button to search your rtopic before starting a new thread. At least I think they say that, haven't actually read the rules... :surprised:

Ah, Robin, if GTI owners got the mpg that GT TDI owners do then there would be nothing but willy-waving on here. :signLOL:

That would be pretty sly if it was a police car (also are they allowed to aggrevate you into a race?). Not experienced a TDI DSG but I'm sure they'd be a great cruising vehicle. Tuned properly they ould probably put out some serious torque/acceleration figures. Economy-wise though, manual is better (and CC Robin  )

In all sensible-ness, I have a 2.0 GTTDi, it was the 140 bhp model now mapped to 180+. I do local driving, stop-start to work during the week and a mix 50/50 of motorway and rural roads at the weekend. Using regular Shell Diesel I always see over 500 miles to a tank (think they're 55 litre capacity). My normal range is about 550 miles, record is possibly just shy of 600 miles/tank. My mpg is around 48 overall. Total motoway journey can see me 55mpg or a wee trip dowm to the shop can see me at 40mpg.
HTH :happy2:

Small diesel Willy's are compensated by big torquey bollocks. Lol

Cruise control lowers your mpg. I very rarely use mine. You will get the best mpg by selecting gears manually and keeping a light right foot, and changing gear before 2k revs. Try to build speed gently, and try to anticipate the road and traffic ahead so you do not have to break hard. If you see traffic ahead, let off the accelerator and let the car roll along a bit.
From a 25 mile drive to work, 10 miles on motorway at 70-75mph, and the rest A roads at 50-55mph, I've had 86mpg out of my golf, although that's a BlueMotion. Generally I get around the 70mpg mark, and around 700-800 miles to a tank full.

Today I had an 80 mile round trip in my ED30, 2 of us with 2 lots of golf clubs and trolleys, all of it A roads with 40mph and 60mph limits, and trip computer says I averaged 37.2mpg :happy2:

Now that is bloody dangerous, as the traffic behind don't know what you are doing
One of my pet hates, and very bad driving.
End of rant......
-
I dont think its that dangerous, if you read the road correctly and leave yourself a proper gap between the car in front, you shouldnt have any problems! You should be able to see the traffic ahead of the car your following anyway!

....Have you misunderstood Ifti, Oli?
Doesn't he simply mean that instead of late braking he lifts off the accelerator and let's the car slow of its own accord in coming up to the traffic ahead (or indeed a 30/40 mph sign). All it requires is good judgement of distance so that you arrive at the correct speed.

Coasting is indeed very dangerous, it doesn't give a clear indication to the traffic around you. Just google 'is coasting dangerous in a car', There's lots of views on it, and it even says it uses more fuel? You are not in proper control of the vehicle.

Coasting is when you let it roll in neutral. I think what Ifti meant was leave it in gear and let off the accelerator so that the car slows down.
-
Coasting is coasting. Not all drivers are as alert as us quite clearly
-
Slowing down whilst still in gear isnt coasting and you still have full control of the car. Dont they / Did they teach you in your driving test to slow down with your gears?
-
.
I interpret Ifti's words as slowing down while still in gear and that isn't coasting. We all agree that coasting in neutral is dangerous.
-
Coasting = Neutral, slowing down in gear is not "coasting" its just driving efficiently, if the person behind you needs to see brake lights to realise he is catching up/getting closer he should not be on the road! :scared:

Sorry, but coasting is when you put it into neutral and let it roll.
He means leaving it in gear and just letting off the accelerator so it slows down with the gears. If some body behind cannot see that the gap is closing between them and you then they are stupid. I follow cars that slow down without braking all the time!
If you decided to let off the accelerator in 5th gear and then dropped it to 3rd or something then that is dangerous lol.
-
67.7 average mpg on the way to work this morn. Rush hour traffic, 90% motorway and the rest is 30/40mph. Mines a 2.0 140 but remapped
-
So you either have to be on the accelerator or the brake all the time?!
Nothing wrong with slowing down in gear, or making use of engine braking as my driving instructor used to say.
Coasting, as clarified by many, is when you're either in neutral or have the clutch down and is dangerous and wastes fuel.
-
iMHO the people who are constantly on the brakes on the motor way is much more disruptive and dangerous than lifting off and letting the car slow with engine breaking and wind resistance, all drivers should constantly be paying attention to distances of all cars around you. I allows look ahead and will back off the throttle in anticipation of traffic ahead, I had a 230 mile round trip this morning at motor way speeds up to redditch and back hitting m25 at rush hour twice and got 35mpg and still have 190 miles on trip comp.
As said use d mode accelerate gently maintain a steady speed and gentle right foot and you will see figures improve :driver:
-
I got about 37mpg on the motor way going to pick up my exhaust last sat. averaging about 70mph
I've got a GTI.

Yet taught by the IAM, which I had to pass an advanced test to join, 0bserved by a serving traffic officer in the passenger seat. It's the person behind who is the bad driver if they are too close or not paying enough attention to see the car in front slowing down and act accordingly.
-
I have an A3 2.0 TDI, guessing you got something similar. Aslong as you keep a steady foot you'll be fine, does it have a trip comp/mpg display?
