Title: Rear Brakes for mk6

The time has come to change my rear discs as they are pretty worn down now after fitting harder pads and they are noisy under braking,
I have been looking around for some aftermarket ones preferably with Ali bells but cannot find any ??
Don't want to fit standard ones as the hubs start rusting as soon as they are fitted 
Maybe larger calipers and discs, any thoughts on this ?

Drop DaveB a PM, I am sure he will have some ideas.

The default upgrade is the R32/S3 310mm vented rears but I am not sure how many 2 piece discs are available for this. VWR where meant to be making a replacement disk for these 310mm calipers.

You don't need rear brakes, smaller the better.

I am just after some better quality ones really as the oem ones are made of butter and rust as you look at them, that's why I was thinking the alli bells route ? More for quality than performance I think ?
I know the harder pads will wear the standard disc as it has done quite a lot since I fitted them about six months ago, the rears are now goosed after quite a bit of track work.
S3 rears maybe, better quality ?

My OEM rears did 50000 miles and 5 years and didn't look too shabby when they came off.

Have you thought about painting the 'bell' on an OEM disc to stop it corroding?

Having spoken to a chap who prepped mk5s for racing, they actually chopped the rear pads to decrease rear braking force :-)

Probably better fitting standard pads back in then?  so the pads ware down and not the disc, after a trackday my rear wheels are full of iron filings and the disc surface is pretty scoured, the fronts are just full of brake dust as normal with the vwrs and DS 2500 pads,
Think the rears have Brembo sports pads ? Doesn't feel unbalanced on track tho
Would prefer alli bells instead of getting the hammerite out  :ashamed:  :grin:

I can't imagine anyone will do a 2 piece rear disc in the 286 x 12 size for the gti and if they did they would be insanely expensive for no real performance benefit imo...

I've done all sorts of track days with my oem rear setup and havent yet felt the need to even upgrade to the R32 rears, quick coat of high temp paint on the bells and mine still looked like new after 2 years until they wore out and needed changing anyway  :happy2:

I use 'VHT' brand high temp paint in ali colour or if you fancy satin black then BBQ paint is excellent  :happy2:

I upgraded to the S3 rear set-up on the ED30 to redress the balance a little after fitting the TAROX 10 pots up front. It definitely made the car a better balanced car IMHO.  Obviously a heavier set-up than OEM, but I sacrificed this to get the braking balance. :happy2:

To be honest, it depends how you drive, as to what advice is best.

The fastest way to get a FWD around a track is to use as much weight transfer as you can get over the front wheels, so that means the rear brakes are used for control rather than stopping and you run as small and light as you can. You sling all the power to the front to get weight on those wheels, which equals turn-in grip. Once you're confident enough to go in faster on trail braking, using the oversteer that come with it, you'll see why. It's pretty much why French cars are fast. I ran 343mm Alcons and standard rears, pretty much like the VWCup cars run - I never had an issue.

That said, lots of people don't like this kind of setup and want something more 'planted'.. hence the S3 rears. Fair enough, but don't be tempted to run uprated rear pads, as without a brake bias valve you'll never get enough heat into them to use them effectively, OEM are more than adequate.

Tony, thanx for the advice on this, this rear braking lark is a bit of a minefield  :sad1:
I tend to drive by heavy braking on n off at last minute coming upto a bend, least time on the brakes as possible as to not generate too much heat in them, so I prefer a more planted feel and I also run a very stiff set up on the PS10s
So we're doz that leave me  :driver: and don't say in the gravel  :laugh:

Big rears / little rears.........drilled/grooved.......lunar landing fake/real

It will continue ad infinitum...

If you've got the ride height and low weight and most importantly the bollocks and a roll cage then yeh go little rears.

If you're not sure and have doubt then there is no doubt...go for the stable option and you can pretty much assume you'll be driving your car home and to work the following day instead of following it down the motorway on the back of a lorry.

I've only ever come across one pro race driver on any of the forums I frequent and he's currently bugging me for a 4 pot big disc rear conversion for a TTRS, that said Mike's got more track time than most of us and is experienced enough to realise how he likes his car set up....I strangely like red sauce instead of brown on sausage sandwiches etto applys here.

Reccomended going DS2.5 on the rear on Neil's car, but to be a little more empirical about things I'll put some temperature paint on the discs and see how we go, Neil hopefully might report back on whether we get the green to go off.

DS2.5 on the back was more for a bit more bite over OEM without spending a fortune rather than heat capability

It is good to know that if you do get into trouble there is some decent anchors to try and avoid getting too bent  :grin:
My rears are shot anyway so will see what this setup brings
