expect to double your fuel bill to double and more understeer, great looking car though...
-
I used to have an scooby so know about understeer  and it will not be getting used has regular has my current car so fuel bills will not be a problem :happy2:

S5 over an S3 any day. Just look at it. Phwoar!!!!
-
love the s5---its the car i would go for next(or a r32 twin turbo)
-
Lovely engine, but if its anything like the 3.0TDI to drive, it won't be an exciting car to drive.

It's not the power though Andy, the setup makes them really numb to drive, almost too safe and sensible imo

I have driven one, great noise and felt very stable, but also felt fat and boring. Fuel economy was as bad as you would expect.
My choice at that budget and vehicle type would be a 335i Msport coupe.

^^ What he said.
Bare in mind the 3.0TDI quattro does 0-60 in 5.9 seconds... and it doesn't feel anywhere near as quick as that
-
A5OC will have some good info Darren.
Fuel bills will be nasty though
-
And I wouldn't buy that one without Nav. As much as the Nav is poor by RNS510 standards it leaves a great expanse of plastic where the Nav controls should be and come resale time the first question any dealer will ask is '.......... has it got Nav?'
-
Darren,
I friend of mine tried the merc e class, audi a5, and bmw 5 series. He said the audi (3.0tdi) was the quickest of the bunch, but felt very numb as said above. He went for the 5 series in the end
Although for that kind of money.. might be worth looking at

I do enjoy this game

It think it's quite well accepted that the 3.0TDi is a very good match for the S4/S5 but I guess there are pro's and cons for both. Fuel economy for the 3.0 isn't special by TDI 140/170 standards - I get around 36-37 overall but a recent 1.5 hour slog through London saw it at <25. :ashamed:
3.0TDi with a drop of software is a different prospect though
-
Never driven the S5, but I have the A5 3.0TDi, and it was very fast and very easy to go fast. Its almost as quick as an S5, and a re-map would sort that out.
I love the look of the S5 though, a stunning car.
If the fuel economy of my old RS4 is anything to go by, then it will be poor on fuel!, but if you are only using it as a second car then not an issue. :happy2:
-
S5 over S3 anyday
-
These are fantastic value, £20k?! Jees.... :driver:
A Haldex controller should see to the understeer?
If you can manage the running costs, go for it Darren

Ermmmm... they don't have haldex.

No Haldex on these Pete, proper Torsion 4 wheel drive so active 100% of the time for extra fuel drinking

Yeah but at least your tyres wear evenly :ashamed:
Buying 4 at a time as gonna hurt

And exactly how long do you think it would be before it had Navi and every other retrofitable mod once Daz got his sticky mitts on it, probably got it under his stairs already just in case!

Very expensive Dave, very expensive.
No price here but just look at what you need -

£3k here to go from MMI2 to MMI3
http://www.vwcruise.com/Audi-MMi-3G-Upgrade-from-Basic.html
Audi are tw@ts mate, they use SVM and Component Protection to make these things more difficult. If I change anything on my car with VCDS when it goes for service it comes back as it left the factory.
-
Just had Rich round with is new car and he said not to go with the S5 or at least test drive one first so you know what my Monday morning consists of now
Cheers Dave I did have every thing planned which is why I didn't have much interest in a fully spec'd one but if they use the same MMI system has the newer A4 I may have to find one with Nav??

It's £400 just for a map upgrade Darren. :surprised:
and there isn't a way around it like you'll be used to.

:chicken: Oops.
Can you not control the distribution to each axle on these with aftermarket controllers?
-
There is an option of an upgraded sports differential from the factory Pete.
-
AFAIK the quattro system is mechanical and not 'controller' operated. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Just looked at one of them but a couple of G more and a lot less mileage

Prefer the S5 to the S3 but both brilliant cars. I like the M3 but I just don't like BMW interiors for some reason
-
Ultimately it depends whether you are brand loyal as well. I love being part of the VAG enthusiast scene as well, and whenever I own something else, regardless of how good it is, I wish I had chosen the VW equivalent instead.
-
I'd have an S3 over an S5, I'm sure whatever you get Darren it will be immense when your finished with it :happy2:

That's a very compelling point.....

The new gen 2.0T quattros with 211PS remap stage 1 to over 300bhp. I'd pick that instead personally. Less weight, lower fuel bills, same power. With an S-Line kit they even look basically the same
