Hello all! This is my first post, so I might as well introduce myself here too! :happy2:
I'm Llyr, from Wales (North Wales), my mate has recently joined too (JGJ - who drives a Golf GTi) - both rolling in Mk5 Golfs :jumping:.
Picking up my standard '08 Golf GT Sport TDi by the end of the week. Completely standard (apart from a bluetooth kit fitted by VW, and the 18" Charleston alloys), I have a few plans under my sleeve for it. Will reveal a bit more soon!
Quite into my detailing etc (Or it might be OCD?). So all pics will be posted about that!
Some pics; :happy2:

Thanks, Monte! What lowering kits would you recommend? I've read up on a few on here. I'd be after something half decent anyway, I don't want to spoil the ride. "Been there done that" with coilovers! :scared:

Here's a small update. I haven't really done that much to the car. Weather has been awful pretty much throughout May.
Anyway - I managed to give her a full clean, clay bar and started off with some correction to the paintwork (which it desperately needed!)
Here's some pics of my progress;
Before;

So I wasted no time before whipping out the snowfoam;

Door insert, crevices, bumpers and all the nooks and crannies were tended to using APC;
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss168%2Fllyrjones%2FIMG_9056.jpg&hash=afc7e28c9fdd264587369f98efd96bd152cbd9a1)

(Arches were also cleaned with APC and the pressure washer at this stage)
Next step were the wheels;

Then, using a two bucket method, I went onto wash the car with a lambswool mitt;

First Detail on the Golf. (Starting to think this should be in the Detailing section? :scared:)
After I finished washing her for the evening, next morning saw the DAS 6 and some compound to tackle the ugly swirls.
Scholl Concepts is the newest of ranges I've been trying out, pretty impressed with the results too; (S17+ used with the Hexlogic heavy cut pad on most panels)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss168%2Fllyrjones%2FIMG_9077.jpg&hash=63e48a6c346f2c9ff611c3861b6ea52dc9d9d361)
After two passes of SC 17+, SC 40 was applied with a Green pad, alongside Poorboys Blackhole to further enhance the finish;
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss168%2Fllyrjones%2FIMG_9079.jpg&hash=a250476da43f51a7880f3d3273235997e2df6e2f)

Thought I'd try out some Dodo Juice Blue Velvet! (A b*tch to apply and buff!)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss168%2Fllyrjones%2FIMG_9084.jpg&hash=382738957b0bc60b611c9627deef08550fc122c6)

Found it quite tricky trying to capture the swirls on camera, they were moderate, not too bad. Worse case being the roof;
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss168%2Fllyrjones%2FIMG_9086.jpg&hash=204a16ea63b4ff7e513a34dd973df1f11453c651)

Bonnet done;

You get the idea anyway! :happy2: Finished article;

Anyway, I hope that's not too boring! I just love to clean! Pictures don't do it justice, especially my phone!

Looks great buddy :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
Very classy colour. :drool:
Have you tried a detail spray like Meguires Ultimate Detail. :wink:
After rinsing the car just spray on before drying the car.
I always use Ultimate detail spray every wash.
It's great stuff, and as well as aiding your drying, giving the paint a great wet gloss look, it will also make your wax coat last a lot longer.
Dodo juice Red Mist is another great detail spray, but it's pricier than the Megs.
(especially if Megs is on offer at halfords on a 3for2 or BOGOF deal) :notworthy:
Sorry if you already know this or use it :ashamed:

Cheers Monte, indeed I do. I use tropical mist, chr*st that stuff smells good!... I didn't use it this time round, as I stripped the car to bare paint prior to correcting. I did fully clay it, but pictures of claying are probably as dull as the job itself! :confused:
Oh - and please don't mention 3 for 2 deals! They tend to empty my wallet, although - I have pretty much everything I need by now!
-
Great car! And great work on the paint.
Scholl is brill isn't it! :happy2:
-
Looking smart :happy2:

Another little update. Inters was a blast, I'm sure I met a couple of you on Saturday night - and made a tit out of myself too I'm sure! :drinking:

GTi Sideskirts fitted. (Undecided on a colour code at the moment, so I went for the textured black ones!);

Hopefully looking into a GTi / Edition 30 rear valance colour coded next, H&R lowering springs and a GTi front splitter (again colour coded, save the centre piece).

photos work for me--car looks excellent :notworthy:

Can see them now. Looking good mate :happy2:
-
Looks great, graphite blue is certainly my preferred colour although I'm also a fan of shadow blue.
How easy was it to switch your GT front grills for the GTi grills? Is it just a straight swap? As I'm looking to do it the other way i.e. GTi to GT
-
Thanks Davo. :happy2:
Not difficult at all. You have two torx screws under the bonnet on the slam panel, two snap clips, and under your numberplate surround - there are two screws also. Pull it towards you and lift slightly. As for the foglight grills and lower grill, there's one screw on each fog grill - and pull towards you. They're quite tough, don't be shy. Hope this helps you buddy!
-
Looking very nice! :happy2:
I love the alloys, what are these called ?
-
Cheers!
Theyre 18" Charleston alloys (opt. extra) Theyre also available on the Mk6s. VW have also made shadow versions of these (alongside the Monza II's).

Charlestons (...and Pescaras) = My Fave 18" OEM wheels :drool:
Although Charlestons are mega bucks and like rocking hoss cack to find!

...and dont last all that long. I have water worming around my VW centre emblems already. Theyre only 4yrs old! With 36k on them :-(

Hey guys, quick (rather mundane) question - my understanding is that this shown in the pic below is the fuel filter right?
Any ideas what to do with the ugly rusting top? Spray it? (Anyone else with a GT done this?)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fss168%2Fllyrjones%2F20121008_162232.jpg&hash=c1c4b7f9fc9a803512748a184ccbd3d223ebe6cb)

Hey LMJ
Very nice car. i have the GT 140 and mines has done exactly the same thing. i put a small amount of stainless steel cleaner on mine to get the worst of it off and left it at that.

Hey mate, you're right thats the fuel filter.
Not sure what causing the rusting exactly, they're not expensive to replace so just stick a new one in with your normal full service. That's what I've done.
-
love the car look sweet as :happy2:
-
Cheers prp, I know right :wink:. It changes it different light too, I am impressed with it!

Cheers Moz, are you sure the top part is replaced too? I thought it was only the internals (a cylindrical filter) that was changed during service? Not sure though!

I've bought complete units previously. Or you can remove it, sand it down and paint it bud.

Really liking your thread. I also have a Diesel, mines being the GT TDI 4Motion. Away to get Charlestons on Saturday, gorgeous set of wheels.

Cheers Moz! Will look into it :happy2:

Well according to the guy I'm buying them from there I'm fine condition apart from a little kerb marks but I'm going to get them Refurbed over winter anyway. There's a couple of things I wana change being front an back lights. Gti fronts and r32 rears. All in good time! Lol.
