Title: ** Detail My Ride - APR Golf R **
Post by: Greeners on May 01, 2012, 04:55:56 pm
Some of you may already be familiar with APR's rather rapid Candy White Golf R demo car. I have been speaking to APR for a while about giving the car a bit of an overhaul, which some of you may be happy to read involved the removal of the rather loud graphics.

The car also needed a few dent repairs and we agreed an enhancement detail of the interior and exterior would be the best way forward.

So as she arrived @ DMR!

So first up was to remove the vinyl. Now I do have some experience removing vehicle vinyl, but this stuff was something else!! It needed lots of heat, and the second it cooled it tore and snapped!!  :fighting: In total I spent around 10 hours getting it all stripped, which included the removal of lights and various trim parts.

During:

Next up the car was pulled outside for the decontamination and cleaning stage:

This was an area on the sill that the wrap had been peeling from:  :scared:

The car was initially rinsed down to remove as much debris as possible, then a generous coat of DMR's special recipe snow foam!

Left to dwell while we attended to the more intricate area's with G101...

Then a thorough wash with Dodo Juice Supernatural Shampoo and a Lambswool wash mit:

Rinse:

Then it was Iron-X time!  Stuff smells awful but is an incredible product!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F53b20a14.jpg&hash=9fa6e1e514c752fdbafb8b6736c65cc2546d75ac)

Unsurprisingly there was a lot of fallout present!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F39da8d41.jpg&hash=b1c353807f6cfe20bd9ba2442d3f9cb2755aa59b)

We were also losing the light at this stage!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F2cfe9272.jpg&hash=6e1a21ccd0e729d3dbce754c7e91f2ad4c78617c)

Then it was Tardis time, not much Tar but worth going over the car the ensure we remove as much as possible prior to claying.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F8f018f53.jpg&hash=22179b26ed29ff7259936ea599e7f386422cd4be)

Snow foamed once again to remove any remaining decontamination products:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F105582b2.jpg&hash=dc5d67a170650f25738a16680fabfadbc5978e4a)

All clean and moved inside for claying:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F8accb791.jpg&hash=72bae980c0eb8e815a597a4796498622e438d08a)

Not too much contaminates present but the paint was now feeling much smoother to the touch!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F1cea19e8.jpg&hash=d95a37888f3291930de9d47ad8044e0091a9cfcc)

We decided to hit the gloss black areas and lights with the Mequires MF system and cleanse the rest of the paintwork with Dodo Juice Lime Prime using a 3M Yellow Pad:

Before:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F12bcc001.jpg&hash=0c3f951f66afdf44283ea8178ce87367c59f9e61)

After:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2Ff06f6849.jpg&hash=9f07df8666f79f9cd74f30664f47f20c3743dad4)

Before:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2Fa43d8f93.jpg&hash=e2ea5365979faf758c1854e77ee23349e560d765)

After:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2Fa0990e2f.jpg&hash=9ae0fc6b6b9411646bce2e90ebd18fd3d16e3590)

Now onto the tail lights.
Before:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2Fd6dfe008.jpg&hash=c66f80daac4e45e1e844af51c29adfec65382f00)

And After:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F614c09c3.jpg&hash=25910d6ec7fc9123c92e9d0e14bbd1fbe6308fc8)

Then onto preparing all surfaces for the LSP!
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fjj468%2Fdetailmyride_2009%2F625e446e.jpg&hash=bd882308f7d9c7f99f1662d1f215d0b442b49927)

We decided to go with Auto Finesse Tough Coat as it does compliment the lighter coloured paint finishes, and we wanted maximum durability for this car. So some afters, again the light wasn't the best but she looked 1000 x better in the flesh!!

Wheels were polished with AG Super Resin then sealed with Auto Finesse Mint Rims. Tyres were dressed with Perl.

I remember seeing some pics of vinyl being removed on face ache. I did wonder then if this was APR's R.

Fully agree it's loads better now :happy2:

I was lucky enough to see this in person. Didn't get a ride though  :sad1:

The vinyl looked horrendous as it was coming off. What made it worse was that it looked like there was chunks of tar etc. I did wonder whether the car had been detailed before wrapping as it didn't give the impression that it had.

The rims are beautiful in person, - don't think the pics do them any justice. Love the finish.

Is that a Z4 I spy?

I think the rimz suit the car as it stands. With the black mirrors it works for me.

Less is more. :happy2:

It will be having some more 'subtle' graphics in the near future and they will tie in nicely with those!

That is a car that has and will take some serious abuse so keeping it looking good and maintaining a good finish will no doubt be difficult - You've set the standard, lets see how long it lasts

Wow, so much better. I hated those graphics. Totally horrendous. Subtle advertising vinyl - tick.  :happy2: Horrible patterns - NO.

Glad you guys were given the job on this. Nice to get some high profile cars to boost the portfolio.  :happy2:

Yes the graphics on the roof have had a clean up as they are staying. They will tie in with the new graphics.  :happy2:

sorry to ask and a bit off topic, but do you ever wax white cars, or do you just stick with the sealant?
Title: Re: ** Detail My Ride - APR Golf R **
Post by: stealthwolf on May 08, 2012, 07:33:54 pm
I think the general consensus is that sealants give a better finish on white cars and waxes give a better finish on black cars. Obviously, YMMV.

Yep, I know that, was just asking greeners if he uses wax on white, I've noticed midlands car care does now and then, so was just wondering if he does or not :drinking:

In answer to your question I do yes. Recently used Dodo Juice Supernatural Hybrid on a few white cars and it gives a great finish!  :happy2:

I like to think there are very few hard and fast rules when it comes to detailing, try different things and use what you can afford and you find easy to use!  :drinking:

Great work again Nath!

I love the perl on the tyres. I think it's going to be my next purchase.  :happy2:

How do you rate the Megs mf system?

Is it recommended for a first timer?

I do rate the MF system but it does have it's drawbacks. As Stealth has already said, it's hard work and has to be done as per the instructions, but great results!  :happy2:
