Title: Black Headlights

I've been wondering about blacking the cars headlights, its an 05 gti. I did this to a subaru before and involved splitting the headlight in two, sanding all the silver parts (apart from the lense) and spraying it black. It looked awesome but was a bit of a pain in the a*s.

Is this the same sort of proceedure for the golf or is it just a different headlight you have to buy?

Has anyone done a DIY job?

Post by: Meallbhan on May 04, 2012, 09:42:16 pm: I'm having second thoughts now as I'm not really up for cutting my headlights up with a dremel. My last car was easy as I just used a hairdrier to split the headlight.

Oh well, silver it is.

It is not easy, as headlights are really well sealed. I tried to follow guide above, but after couple of hours just gave up. It was impossible to split lens from housing.

If you want darker headlights, just get genuine GTI headlights

That second guide is a little better I think. Pretty crazy though how the front bumper has to come off just to remove the headlights, yet another plus point for the scoob! lol.

The lights I have are genuine GTI items as the car is a GTI. The back part of the lights where the bulbs are is black from the factory, its just the bottom flat bit that is silver, you would think VW would have just made the whole lot black as it looks far better.

Still contemplating . . . . . .

I did same, got cheap set, tried to split them, but was not successful. Luckily did not do much damage to chrome set, sold it and got my money back.
