Title: insurance for those who mod
Post by: dannymk5 on May 02, 2012, 09:00:01 am
hey everyone

this may sound a silly question

just wondering for those who mod, for instance, adding a satnav sound system, newbody kit etc,

do you have to list every single item to your insurance every tome you mod?

ive seen a mk5 golf i want to purchase but the year is 05, its had a complete upgrade, new seats, satnav 2007 body kit xenon lights, remap.

im just worried that the price is ok for me but do i have to tell the insurance company every single little mod thats been made?

im worried after naming all these things after ive bought it i may not be able to insure it!

anyone been in this situation before?  :driver:

Yeah u need to inform the insurance about all changes.

You might think it silly but it only takes a few minutes to reel off a list of mods.

Even things like stickers on the car, de-badging, or painting the VW badge black! All need disclosing!!! (they prob won't affect the premium, but must be disclosed anyway)

Sat Nav and xenons might not need mentioning as a mod, as they could be factory fit (If OEM parts) but still worth mentioning its got them, any alterations not std or optional from VW must be declared as mods tho as they are "true" mods (seats, Remap, Bodykit etc).

I have already informed my insurance company of the mods I will be fitting on the next 8 days and they have changed the policy to show that it will have them from x date.

what if the mods are just to make the car look like the upgraded ''facelift'' version? i mean even if the car was in an accident, would the repair shop throw a 2005 GT Bumper on it or the latest version?

apologies if my questions sound stupid i just have no idea and know people are clued up on this fourm  :notworthy:

No, that would be a Mod from std, replacement parts would be done on like for like, they would not upgrade you to later spec in case of an accident, well not unless you paid extra dn requested it anyway (which is a mod)  :happy2:

You'll probably find that unless it's performance related, there will be only a small premium to pay...

But it's a question I've raised in the insurance section before, and the Insurance brokers are telling us EVERYTHING needs to be declared, as it could affect pay-out if/when a claim is made...

I have just recently changed from a bog standard insurance policy to a mod friendly one. I named every mod I could think of at the time and they (Greenlight) gave me an exceptionally good quote, very close to the price I was about to pay for a normal, un-modified policy with admiral.

At the time I told them I had a remap, Eibach Pro Springs, Different OEM Headlights, different OEM stereo, rear GTI valance and front votex valance. I think the only major decider for a price from them was the final horsepower after the remap, they even asked for this.

I am about to add a private plate to the car, plus the Whiteline Anti Lift Kit (suspension mod) and declare that I've had alloys on it since the start of the policy (forgot all about them! :stupid:). I've been told none of these will cause the premium to rise, I will just pay the flat admin fee for them to amend the policy.

There have been cases where insurance won't pay out because of an undeclared mod. I don't mean anything extreme like a bodykit - just a simple sticker. That's right - an undeclared sticker. Albeit a cosmetic mod, it wasn't declared. I think it's been mentioned on here that even forum stickers need to be declared.

If it didn't have it when it came out of the factory, it needs to be declared. That goes for dealer-fitted mods too.

The mod-friendly insurance companies eg brentacre, skyinsurance won't load premiums for cosmetic mods, or even safety mods eg brakes, but they will for power upgrades eg remaps.

My ins co, have agreed to charge me £85 (and a few pence) for the remaining 5 months of my policy for my Mods (TBE, Intake & Stage 2 re-map), they have been informed that Exhaust goes on saturday and intake/remap the following thursday.

I also had to increase my annual mileage limit from 4K to 6K due to 3 return trips to Cornwall and got charged another £116 for the privelidge, suffice to say I will be speaking to Greenlight, Brentacre and Sky come October as I think my current insurer (Flux) is charging a bit much tbh  :surprised:

Anything that was not on the car when it left the factory needs to be declared to the insurance company.

Audio up to the limit amount doesnt need to be (with my insurance) but declared it anyways.

As above get a quote from a mod friendly insurance and they will only normally raise the premium for stuff that gives extra power

The child seat is law, which would trump any insurance regulations. The sticker is dubious - some would argue you shouldn't display it if there is no child in the car. If you're unsure, speak to your insurance company.

The sticker in my previous post I think was a football club sticker.

Lots of the Modified Car Insurance Companies say that but I bet if you returned your car back to stock and wanted to stay with them they wouldn't kick you out! Tis all about the monies!!
