Hey Folks
After trying to convince my Girlfriend to buy a MK4 Anni she is having none of it :sad1: and wants a Mini Cooper S. She has found one she likes and we are going to view it on the weekend. There lies the problem I have absolutely no idea when it comes to Mini's so any tips on what to look out for would be great :happy2:
It's 2005 in Red with panoramic roof, Aircon, Xenon's and full leather with under 40k.
One main question I have the run flat tyres, do you have to keep them?? Or can I just place normal tyres on the car and stick a can of tyre weld in the boot :innocent:
Cheers
Ben

my mrs had a MCS a few years ago.
You can replace the run flats with normal tyres no issue!
take the car for a good run around as the power steering pump is a major issue with these cars. ours cut out on a roundabout once and it was a good thing i was driving as its near enough impossible to get the car going where you want it (it drives as if the engine is not on.... absolutely no power STEERING :driver:).
oem sat nav is a must!
you will have issues going over speed humps as the mini S sits quite low and the front valance tends to scrape across the humps :sad1:
P.S the boot is the size of a shoebox :signLOL:

I have a tip for you............
Talk her out of it!

My brothers ex wife had an MCS, her best friend has one and they all love em, proper girly cars :happy2: (oh and the one time my brother arrived at the pub in it, he got ripped to shreds, so dont drive it unless you want to look like a hairdresser :signLOL:
Same as MVB said, replace them with normals, no issue there
The assistant pro at my golf club has one too, he gets some loads grief about it :happy2:

Cheers guys but I have absolutely no intention of going anywhere near the drivers seat again after the test drive lol. Well unless I fancy a hoon on a very dark night!!!
Thank god your able to take the run flats off!!! I always thought you'd be able to but but the missus thought otherwise after reading about them lol.
Any good Mini forums in the uk??

I have a friend who has one (turbo engine not supercharge) and the turbo went 2 months out of the warranty. Whether it was down to neglect or faulty part, I'm not sure...

You will be missing out, I had a r53 cooper s before my ed30 and now have a r56 jcw one after I sold my cayman, and they are great fun to drive. Take it out on a decent country road and I guarantee you will find it alot more fun and involving than your golf, its not as fast in a straight line but they are very neutral and well set-up out of the box even on run-flats.
40,000 mileage is pretty good for that age so I would just look out for the normal stuff like you would with any other car - has it been modified, gearbox ok, brake pads and discs etc and does the supercharger sound alright.
You might find it quite a crashy ride compared to the soft set-up of the golf but the sharper handling and better grip makes up for it, and changing the tyres to non runflats will improve the ride considerably.
If she gets it, and you can cope with driving a girly car, then take it out for a hoon and report back.
as for mini forums - totalmini and minitorque - seem the better ones.
-
TBH I liked the Mini S,
a good site i was frequenting was lohen.co.uk get cracking :fighting2:
-
Make sure the supercharger belt has been done at the correct intervals, it's very common for these to stretch even beyond the tensioner
As said ditch the runflats for standard tyres, better ride, grip, handling and value!
The engine and gearbox itself is very strong.
Try and get a facelift with the better xenon headlights
-
you can take the run flats of..When you buy bmw or minis new you have to pay extra for them,Go to halfords and get a electric tyre inflator and leave it in the boot
-
mini + corner = alot of fun :)
-
The Mk1 Cooper S is the one to get. My ex had a convertible with the 210 bhp JCW kit, and it was hilarious fun to drive. The whine of the supercharger winding up is a fantastic noise, and it had a superb JCW exhaust, giving a lovely deep note.
Luckily it also had blacked out windows so no-one could see me with the hood up :signLOL:

Ben
This is going to be Ben's dogging car.
Regardless of the advice a deposit is down on the Mini and his 'nature reserve parking permit' is on it's way
-
Haha but dont forget the dog lead Pete :happy2:
Cheers for the replies folks :drinking: :drinking: I seriously forgot all about the supercharger :ashamed: I think i'm going to need to girl up and take it for a hoon then report back, It would be nice to compare it to my old 197

Hi Folks
Thought i'd post this in here as I cant seem to get any sense anywhere else google etc.
After searching high and low and looking at a number of different cars my missus eventually found a Cooper S that was tidy, full service history, seemed absolutely perfect, drove nice and didnt have any problems at all.
It however has now developed a problem :fighting: when it's warm it idles at 1500rpm and sits there for 10secs then rises to 2000rpm then drops straight back down to 1500rpm then repeats. It's as if someone is holding the accelerator slightly so it rises then takes their foot off so it drops back to 1500rpm.
The car was spot on during the test drive which was around 15miles which got it up to temperature it was also fine after the drive home which was around 170miles and again completely normal during that evening after she took it round to show her friends etc. It started doing it earlier on her way back from work.
I originally thought it had an air leak or vacuum pipe blocked/unblocked etc but it only does it when it's warm/driven for a few miles. Does anyone have any ideas or have any previous experience of this on the Mini? Before I take it to the dealer as there are no specialists around this area :sad1:
I can honestly say this has not been my week for cars :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

You need to get it plugged in could be a very simple fix
-
I'm no expert Ben but it does sound like the idle control valve? Used to happen all the time on older ecotec vauxhalls good clean out with WD and they're okay for a few miles
I'm sure someone who has actually owned one and had that problem might be able to let you know a fix for it.

Or a sticky throttle body Try cleaning it

Yup hopefully :happy2: I'm trying to find a local garage who would be able to carry out a diagnostic check. Can honestly say this is the first time i'm stepping out of the VAG world :scared:
Have thought of the throttle body/icv myself but thought if it was either of these it would happen all the time not just when it is warm, but I shall have a look tomorrow :happy2:
-
Did you buy from a dealer or privately?
(PS, I won't say I told you so!  )
-
Unplug the isv and see what happens

Please don't :ashamed:
Dealer!! but he is saying all his warranty covers is major mechanical failure :fighting: :fighting: have had a few unpleasant phone calls with him but i am not getting anywhere. I'm absolutely fuming after what happened to my car last weekend and now this :sad1: :sad1: Car was 100% when we were viewing it and for around 150miles after.
Cheers Mat will give it a go :happy2: Just need to locate the icv first
-
Thats bobbins fella, I'd go to trading standards and take some advice as he can't fob you off that easy!! :fighting:
-
I know mate I shall be making a few calls tomorrow during lunch to see what I can find out am entitled too. Problem is, he is in Stroud so its not as if I can just take the car back to him and say sort it :sad1: even though its becoming more and more tempting. Saying that im gonna stay calm for the mean time get the fault codes read to find out what it can be and go from there.
Fingers crossed its a simple fix
:happy2:

Thermostat?
Ask on Mini Torque. Forget Lohen, they are salesmen. For Cooper S repairs and tuning there is no other plan than 1320autos http://www.1320.co.uk/default.aspx
-
Cheers George i'm just getting registered :happy2:
-
When my Golf was doing that it was the N80...
-
yep - minitorque is the place to go for some advice, be careful though you could soon find yourself on the modding slope!
Does sounds the the ICV though.
I bought an JCW S almost 2years ago now as a inbetween fun car - well its been two years so that says something. They are good fun and when running around town to various clients its a great easy car to work with.
After joining minitorque when I got mine I soon had coilovers, Brembo's, lightweight wheels. I got it all sorted at 1320 - great guys.
