The AM signal comes from the roof mounted aerial, not the rear screen (this is FM only). There should be 2 plugs in the back of the radio (using the diversity technology - clever "magic" that decides which aerial to use for the radio). I think the white plug is connected to the roof aerial and the brown/beige may be for the rear screen aerial or switching or maybe both.

if i turn the volume loud i can almost hear people talking on AM , i have no problems with FM at all,

so your saying maybe the aerial is faulty ?

I would check the roof aerial and the two connectors in going in to the back of the radio. If there is problem with the white connector then this would cause a problem with the AM signal.

anything specific to check when looking at the aerial ?

both plugs at the back of the radio are in ok, i removed them and re-fitted them and still had the same fault

I've had this problem since I got my car over a year ago. Checked the leads at the back of the stereo and everything is fine. Is it worth trying a new roof aerial or better to get the roof lining down and check the connection to the aerial?

I fitted an aftermarket radio recently. I had some issues with radio reception. If you have a factory fit radio and you have issues with AM then it will be either the roof aerial, the connections at the back of the radio or the radio itself. If you have an aftermarket radio you could have issues with the radio adaptor.
