Title: Strange tyre width question??
Post by: neil86 on May 02, 2012, 08:44:36 pm
Basically I am running 215 40 18 fallen tyres on 8.5 x 18 rim fair bit of stretch, now I was getting tyre noise so asked on here good tyres.

I in the end went for conti's as got a better deal now I have gone to 225 for less stretch. Only problem is the tyre is massive and I mean the side wall rim protector protrudes the wheel by about 10mm now even on a standard gti rim I think these would catch.

Are all these like this it's just I was expecting the rim to still protrude the tyre.

I have 245 45 18 on my van tyre and it doesn't protrude that 8.5 wheel. I thought maybe it's a mo conti but we put two together and they are identical so new conti's are they running the extra size side wall.

the reason the 245 fits the van pefect is they are the correct width for a 245 tyre--what were the falkens like with the side wall

Stretched mate no rubbing I thought I sent you that pic, just loud. The increase from 215 fallen to 225 conti is unreal you would swear its like a 245

looking at the pics again--it would seam a 215 conti would of been a better choice--tha falkens are a better tyre for stretching, were the old falkens unevenly worn

What do you run on your car any pics? I think they were slightly but even if they wernt the noises coming from them was horrendous on my car put it on my mates  Leon and was fine. Weird.

Am now stuck with 4 tyres that even on standard gti rim I think they would catch could be wrong am guessing all conti sport 3's are the same.

What Contis are they?

I had sport contact2's on an 8.5" rim and I didn't have any probs.

Andy can you post the pics?

Interested to see what they are like.

It's a contact 3 mate unsure if new 3's all have this but the tyre width is ok it's the side wall to rim protector bulges out to wider than the rim a lot

Spoken with conti and all contact 3's are the same, he is saying the rim protector is sticking further out due to the slight angle from the small stretch.

Conti contact 2's don't have as much of a protector and that's what they advise a lot of BMW drivers when they ring up with my problem.

hate to point out the obvious, but why would there be any stretch on a 8.5J rim with 225 tyres?

225mm = 8.86 inches  :confused:

i know that the width is measured from the insides of the mounting faces, but even then that can't amount to more than a few mm...

Yep but what he is saying and I understand that the 7-7.5j wheel will pull the side walls in mine are spreading it out.

There the same as what a lot of people on here are running. So probably have to sell on an take a hit.
