Hi All,
Havnt been on here in a while but still running my ED30. Need to do the pads on the rear simples task you may think
Unfortunately the driver side wheel isnt coming off. Ive tried everything that normally works including kicking, heating, boiling water, WD40, driving around with loose bolts etc etc.
There is some movement against the disk but the hubcentric part is seized solid. I locally garage have also had a go, wooden block/big hammer and prying but still not shifting.
The wheel centre bore where machined to fit and I think one is obviously too tight. Others come off fine.
Options how:
1) destroy the wheel
2) Attack the hub, without hopefully knackering the wheel. Obviously cant take the hub off with the wheel/caliper in place.
Hub is prob the cheaper option but there is the chance I still coundnt the wheel off and Ill be left with an un- drivable car.
Pic of the hub. Am I right in thinking behind the dust cover is the hub nut. Any pics or knowledge of with the cover removed will there be enough room to chisel off the lip that supports the wheel?

 of this advice welcome

Bigger hammer!

Bigger hammer!
Exactly what I should suggest but tried. Big hammer with the car up on a ramp so that the chap could get a decent swing. The suspension just seems to absorb the harder you hit.
-
Is it possible to take the swing arm off with the wheel still on? That way you could get the wheel onto a solid base and try whacking the hub through the centre whole.

Good idea, anyone confirm?

I'd cover your brakes with a bit of old newspaper and spray the s*** out of the nut both front and back with wd40 - that's always solves my issues :happy2:
-
Right as you were everybody i can fix this. :innocent:
If you look closely at the pic you will notice that you have left at least 4 of the wheel nuts in place. Remove these and it should just slide off. :signLOL:

i get this all the time when changing tyres--where the car are supposed to get a full service at the dealers but they don't take the wheels of
-
If you;ve tried everything else, why not try a hub puller?
If you can get a steel bar behind the wheel spokes, and bolt the to the legs of the puller then you should get the centre bolt onto the hub centre and start turning.
Failing that,a lenght of chain and a mates car. :popcornsoda:

PMSL.......but not at the OP's predicament obviously.

Drive through a McLaren pit box?
Sorry mate, hope you get it sorted.
Regards,
John

soak inside with wd40--shame you don't life near me,i would get it off for you
-
You could always loosen but don't remove all the bolts and slowly drive the car forwards/backwards till you feel the wheel move. Then stop and jack it up. Hey presto wheel off.
Failing that

I think the penetrating oil is a good suggestion. Perhaps some ice spray??
My final suggestion is a little iffy but may bail you out - Do so at your own risk!!
Slightly loosen the wheel bolts, not too much maybe a few threads and with the car on the ground, engine running, turn the steering wheel and try to use the force of the power steering to work it loose. If that doesn't work then a short drive at slow speeds with the wheel bolts loose enough to allow the wheel to move but not come off the hub. Be very, very careful.
Edit - I see Carl is thinking on the same lines as me ^^^^^^
-
some times loosing the bolts and letting the jack down some times works--or as above like Stu says
-
I've done the loosen bolt and drive method before. But as I, and Stu, said do it slowly/carefully.
-
I do believe its a rear wheel that's stuck.
Where do you live?

Thanks for all the suggestions especially the take the bolts out :happy2:
Yep the rear wheel, Up in Newcastle.
The Hub puller is the only thing I havnt tried. I did try the old loosen the bolts and drive around, Honestly think I could take the bolts out do a few hundres miles without it budging.
-
your only 40 miles from me--pop down tomorrow and i will have a go for you

Thanks for the kind suggestion. Will message you if dont get sorted. Away for the weekend and hope I dont get a puncture :surprised:
I know people are thinking im a pussy and just give it a wack but honestly shes stuck on a good un

Had a lorry wheel stuck on once. Even handbraking it into kerbs wouldn't budge it. Finally cornering it so hard it went onto 3 wheels got it off!
I find that spinning the wheel and using a heavy copper hammer has never failed me on very stuck wheels.
Has the wheel been heated up first before hammering yet?
-
Feeling your pain on this one, I had the same thing happen to me managed to remove front wheels by loosing nuts and just turning the steering wheel from side to side, but the rears would not shift. In the end I took it down to my local ats who with a big hammer managed to remove them whilst I hid in the corner! :scared: Car needs to be up in the air properly supported to hit the wheels hard enough. Needless to say there's now enough copper slip on the wheels and hubs and the nut threads to avoid a repeat performance!
-
This has happened to me on other cars, not the Golf as yet. I've used a long and heavy piece of wood. Jack up the back two wheels and take off the good one. You can then use the wood underneath the car to knock it off. With a good swing you can get a lot of force behind it and the wood is softer on the tyre and wheel.

Update:
After driving around praying I didnt get a puncture sorted today. Tried 3 different garages recently and all of the tricks of the trade still wouldnt budge.
Had a look over the weekend and noticed the hub bolt cover was slightly larger than the hub itself. Removed this by punching through it and levering out.
Wheel them came off with a couple of wacks :drinking:
Replaced the bearing as had to buy a kit for the new cover and jobs a goodun
