Hey everyone, been lurking for a week or so now thought it might be a good idea to get registered and say hi!
I currently drive a MK4 GTi (1.8 non turbo) boo!! But it was only a runabout for a year cost me £1,000 with 148K on the clock and now I'm on 158K with nothing but a couple of oil changes, 2 tyres, 2 wheel bearings and a set of rear discs/pads.
I want to upgrade now I've got 7K to spend and I want a MKV GTi Turbo!
I've been reading about DSG gearbox failures and thats scared me off a little I was considering one!
Ideally I'd like one with the lesser miles the better what should I expect in this budget?
Thanks guys and girls
J

Hi mate welcome to the site, now when looking for one make sure you get as many of these as you can
Highline cluster
Centre armrest
Xenons
MFSW
Leather
18in alloys
full history
reason being is after a week on here you will want to add most of the above and its easier to buy one with it than to retro fit it, for 7k you can prob get a nice 2006 with about 80k on the clock from a dealer, you may find one a little cheaper on the net, look out for rust on the front wings tho
-
Hi mate thanks for that!
Silly question though what is MFSW?

Multi function steering wheel, you can scroll thro the highline menus with the buttons on the wheel and change radio or cd tracks aswell as answer phone calls if you have a OEM bluetooth kit fitted

Aha! That's great Phil thanks for your help so far mate I've been looking on Autotrader and PH seems to be quite a few out there in my price range!
Would you advise staying away from the DSG?
-
The DSG will change gear faster than you can ever do with a manual, hmm only you know if you want a DSG or not, i like autos/DSG but dont know if i could live with one day to day
Iknow people who have never had a DSG box problem but i also know people who have had endless box problems
-
also see if the cam belt has been done as well
-
Thanks mate, I'm not too worried about racing everywhere so I think I will stick to a manual!
Theres lots about so I've found but the prices seem to fluctuate a lot!!
I've seen a Black 05 Plate 3 Door GTi 47K on the clock with full leathers xenons etc for £7900 and then I've also seen similar models without leather and with 80K on the clock on 06 plate for the same money?? :surprised:
Do people just overprice these days? It isnt a CAT D either although I've seen lots of them around as well I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole I know it'd be a nightmare to sell!!

All mk5 Golfs hold there money well, yes some are more than others but i wouldnt say there over priced, mine even tho its a Diesel with 148k on the clock with full history still gets offers of around 4/4.5k the reason i dont sell is because i cant replace it with anything better for the money so i keep her
-
Thanks Phil, it just seems that the prices fluctuate so much from one to the next!!!
Got my eye on a few hopefully by this time next week I'll be in a shiney black/red/grey 3 door gti with Leathers, Sat Nav & Xenons!! (probably a bit ambitious for 7K!)
-
you won't regret owning a gti, best thing i did after my r32 :happy2:

Dont be scared off from DSG box, I have always had manuals and this is my first (semi) Auto and I am loving the DSG, when you want to pootle around daily, stick it in "D" and relax and when you wanna have some fun pull it back into "S" and change gear yourself, does the Std GTI with DSG have paddles?, I use them now and again but mainly D or S tbh, if you get the DSG re-mapped it will be more like a manual anyway (I am about to get my DSG re-mapped).
Regards spec, deffo get one with Highline, MFSW and Xenons, all the other stuff can be easily retro-fitted when you have more cash! :happy2:
GLWTS and hope to see your new wheels soon
