Title: Black smoke and diesel smell?
Post by: Snickers on May 06, 2012, 03:48:09 pm
I had the dpf removed from my 170 on Tuesday. It now chucks out alot of black smoke and I can also smell diesel inside the car. Is this normal?

The black smoke is as that's all the particles that your filter would have caught. As for the diesel smell, sounds like you may have a leak  :sad1:

you shouldn't smell diesel in the car--not sure but the car might be remapping now the dpf is removed

its common my PD170 did it aswell, the fumes coming out of the back of the car really stink, if the winds blowing the right way they come straight under the car and into it

few mates also had the same

Fr&r tuning. Only did a software remap to delete the dpf data. The ecu was not remapped for bhp increase. It does seem to smoke a lot though

So if I were to buy their stage 0 map with an sts unit would that override the current map in the car and everything will run fine?

best taking it to your nearest tuning place and get it done on the rollers

Thing is I don't really want to spend money on a remap to increase bhp as I'm happy with the current power. It was the dpf light that was bugging me and havin to go for a short blast on the motorway every week! Now the dpf issue is sorted it smokes a lot.

it sounds like it over fuel but a tuner will tell you better, they can just give the car a mild map,Dave at pdt or Nick at r-teck will advise you better

See this a lot when we get cars in that have had their software created using a patch rather than a 'proper' dpf off solution.

A patch is a method of 'papering over the cracks' to eliminate the dpf light and dpf regeneration process. A better solution will alter a huge amount more, including torque limiters, smoke maps, boost maps etc.... But also cost more to carry out.

Would a remap sort this problem?

If the person you choose has a good knowledge of DPF off then they could resolve the issues (as long as the ssues re software related and not an underlying fault)

I would advise you talk to the people that id the dpf off and discuss the issue, sometimes we need to re-visit DPF off jobs on some cars, but we cracked the siemens PPD system a while back now, but still get every DPF off we carry out to return after 7 days for a check.

Shark would apply a new "Map" onto you car this map would contain the DPF Delete and OEM Mapping

Car wont smoke at all

i used my STS Device to switch my car (DPF Delete,EGR Delete and Straight Through Exhaust) from Stage2+ (Very Smokey) to Stage 0 and the car didnt smoke at all

of course i turned my map back a few minutes later

The 170 with DPF off hardware and software should not black smoke, if your getting fumes in the car I would say you have a leak on the exhaust somewhere near the front of the system.
