Title: Hammerite spray
Post by: pareet on May 16, 2009, 05:38:15 pm
Hey guys, need some help - wondering if anyone has done this in the past...

On my Gti,  I want to spray the front VW badge from silver to black. Have also found a can of black hammerite spray paint in the garage from a year or so ago. Would this do the job, if I sand the current silver badge and then apply a few coats of the black hammerite spray leaving a few hours between each application? Has anyone done this in the past?

Have searched the forums but no one seems to have used hammerite. Thought I would ask before I go out and buy some proper spray from Halfrauds.

thanks !

it has a hammered texture to it though? is that the look you're after or have you got the smoothrite version?

Apply a few coats of Plasti-dip and if you don't like it, you can peel it off leaving the emblem like before.

I haven't used it myself but those who have say that you can peel off the plastic shell  any time you want to provided you used a few coats initially.

hammerite "smoothrite" satin black in a rattlecan.
Had problems trying to get that stuff to stick to the hubs. The tin version meant there were brush marks in the paint and the spray stuff didn't dry quickly enough.

I keyed mine with sandpaper then primered, then did a few coats of matt paint - just using normal car paint from halford - works fine.  Best to do a couple though so you have a spare as it can get chipped easily - especially in the winter.

I was using it on my mk2 but i didn't like the results, maybe a duff can but i didnt like the colour of red or the finish.
