Title: New learner car for a 4'7" step daughter
Post by: muckipup on May 13, 2012, 05:00:13 pm
Chaps and chapesses,

My step daughter will soon turn 17, has already got her provisional and is looking to raid her bank for a car. This would be in the £1000 to £1500 range.

The trouble is that she is tiny...4 foot 7 inches!!

What cars should we be looking at for a munchkin when considering distance to pedals, safety, learner insurance and second-hand cost??

C1/107/Aygo
VW Fox
Ford Ka

Basically something small and group1, a friend's son has just been getting his first quotes and they've been coming in around £4k or about £1600 with GPS/restricted drving. Poor kid.

Most cars will have height adjustable drivers seats and adjustable steering wheels so should all be ok

Something like a 2000 on polo, corsa etc would probably be the best bet.

My aunt is a similar height. She has driven a pug 206 and now has driven the new polos. She still has to have a cushion even with max height but has not had any problems.

My mum was a tiny peep, 4'9" and drove a Pug 206 (with a cushion and the seat right up and forward) and she loved it. cracking little car as well.

Hedge, would she be able to see over the steering wheel in that thing? It's a bit high.

Some good suggestions there folks  :happy2:

I am not too fussy about what car she gets as long as it fits the criteria so I will start plugging the cars mentioned above in to websites and see what comes up within a reasonable radius of where I live

Big thanks

 I did suggest to her that one of those plastic 'kiddicars' that toddlers have may be an option....as you can imagine, it didn't go down too well!  :ashamed: Height seems to be a sensitive subject.

For a maximum of £1500 you will struggle to get a C1 or an Aygo!

I'd probably look at the diesel Lupo 1.7sdi or if she can push the boat out a 1.4TDI.
Or a bit of french clutter Peugeot 106 1.4 or 1.5 diesel - immense mpg on these too and cheap as chips to run.

We had a 206 1.4hdi for 6 years, would be a tremendous first car. £30 a year tax and easy 65mpg.
Very good safety rating for an older car and should see a few within the budget you have, also most have very good spec (aircon, power steering etc)

Driver seat should have height adjustment, if not then gti half leathers go for nothing these days.

Would personally avoid 106/saxo as they crumple too easily in a crash.
