I feel silly had the car two and a half weeks. i've just noticed that though the xenons on my car appear to be factory fit. They don't have headlight washers. I thought xenons always have washers due to EU laws? I haven't had any road users flash me whilst using the xenons.

They are OEM then that someone has retrofitted. Just not finished the job off.
VW would not release a car with factory fit Xenon's without Headlight washers. As you say it is EU Law :happy2:

Certainly would have left the factory with headlight washers, which came with all stock cars that have Xenons. The washers themselves are part of the winter pack, so some cars had them that ran halogen headlights.
The beam pattern leveling is done by the auto level kit which factory Xenon cars also should have.
I'd put money on the previous owner of your car having retrofitted Xenons to your vehicle(?) with the standard bumper in place etc... :happy2:

Won't there be a problem with MOT if a car has Xenons but no washers?

No.
They only have to work IF fitted.
As long as the beams are all correctly aligned they will be fine.

What exactly does the winter pack entail as going by the spec of my car I WAS pretty sure I've got that spec.
Where would I go to finish the job off and how would I do it? Im glad it won't affect the MOT. The headlight beam is fine the beam goes up and then down as I switch them on. Ive seen the headlamps "auto level" when going along roads.
I really am gutted. I passed up on many nice examples simply because they didn't have xenons. Then this happens. Im a bit cheesed with myself.

Sounds like you have auto levelling then so just the washers are missing.
Maybe the previous owner removed them or replaced the bumper and not the washers.
Check if the wiring is in place behind the bumper?
Might not be so bad. You may just have to fit and connect the washers?

Its easy to tell if they are retro fitted... just look for a connector like this...

Hi I'll have a look behind the bumper and see what I can see.Its easy to tell if they are retro fitted... just look for a connector like this...

Sorry guys... on my polo I could adjust the level of the headlight beam. I can't do the same on my car.
Does this mean I've got factory fit xenons? Do all GTI's not have the ability to adjust the headlight beam up or down or is this specific to factory equipped xenon cars? I can adjust the brightness of the dials on the dashboard (like on my polo) but theres definitely no way of doing adjusting the level of the headlight beam on my GTI, though I can adjust the brightness of the dials.

Only halogens have headlight adjustment where as xenons would have an auto levelling kit as standard from the factory

Cars origonally equiped with Halogens have a manual spin roller switch which adjusts height adjustment along with a Dashboard light cluster dimmer roller switch.If you car now has Xenons, that switch will be un-useable and potentially an MOT failure if left installed.
Your best bet is to get a new Dash surround thats fitted with factory fit Golf xenons, so the switch is not visable on your dashboard to the MOT inspector.
I am doing the very same thing currently, so i have no worries come MOT time Nxt january 2013.

Thank you. I have no spin roller on my dash. Only a dashboard dimmer switch. So thankfully I have nothing to uninstall! Which is a relief. I will now get to the bottom as to why my car has no headlight washers or perhaps they're not working? I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for prompt and helpful replies. :drinking:

OP based on your sig you list heated seats which I thought was part of the winter pack which should mean you have the headlight washers also (I dont have either so correct me if i'm wrong).
Also you can tell from your bumper if you have headlight washers, the strip below the headlight will be split in to two bits.

Just noticed you have leather seats so they come heated as standard so my 1st point is probably moot.

If they are 2 piece the next thing to check would be the 20amp fuse (can't remember the fuse number) in the fuse box on the right hand side of the dash as with cold weather freezing the fluid lines can cause the fuse to blow when the washers are operated

I had a play with some of the fuses in the car, I replaced a burnt fuse and now they work brilliantly! I love them. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.
