so, i turn 24 in 6months time and after doing some research it turns out that an S5 becomes easily within insurance distance, in fact its 200 pounds cheaper than what I'm currently paying for the GTI at 23yrs old. so i was wondering if any one has any experience with them? comfort, drivability, sound, specs etc etc. i don't need the centre seat in the back, i don't have kids or a family nor plan on it soon so was wondering what everyone else's thoughts on them are? cheers
-
Is this the really really fat S5 that represents a barge on wheels with an engine that carnt be tuned or the new S5 with the 3.0 charged lump from an S4?
If the latter then good stuff although id take the S4 personaly.
There is a thread on this already iirc :happy2:
-
Is that 24 going on 44?
-
It's the 4.2 supercharged V8 :) I don't really want another golf such as ed35 or golf R as for the same money I can get a nicer Audi :/ and I found that with this lump it can be tuned very easily to 450bhp with Audi R8 territory torque levels  and the noise is superb...
-
Still a barge, albeit a fast barge...
-
can't argue there... but also I'm a bit bored of hatchbacks, my second car was an alfa Brera diesel got shot of that coz it was diesel and an alfa... love the golf but miss the luxury the alfa offered and high standard spec
-
Supercharged 4.2??? Are you sure?
The original S5 was a V8 N/A 4.2 and the 3.0 Diseasal felt quicker. The new ones are V6 3.0 Supercharged.

the early 4.2 V8 were not supercharged mate. Only the much newer 3.0 v6 was supercharged.
The V8 is no where near as tunable.
-
the S5's I've been looking at are stated as 4.2 supercharged? i wouldn't get one if it wasn't due to whats been said by yourself and others, that they aren't very tuneable. main reason i didn't get an R32 was they're crap to tune
-

If so then buy it immediately as Audi have NEVER done a 4.2 V8 with charger from the factory, if you do find one it will most likely be the MTM conversion which was insanely expensive but awesome in equal measure..

Luxuries? You're 24 man. You should be balls out in a Caterham. Everywhere. In every weather.
-
Or Stasis.
-
haha balls out?! so how about an S4? i don't know much about audis, you clearly know more than me so is the S4 3.0 v6 supercharged? I'm not fussed which S it is but prefer not to be a hatchback and what it to be tuneable as i plan on doing so in time
-
Or Stasis. Revo Stevo or Resis...?
-
A 4.2 Audi cheaper to insure then a gti? Really? Why not go ed 30 route and tune that or focus rs route and tune that? 305bhp starting platform if your after big power?
-
B8 S4, but you must have sports diff :happy2:

dead serious, apparently its because the gti attracts a boy racer base where as audi buyers are less this way inclined. man from the insurance companies words not mine!
-
Go for it then bud!!! Nice standard car with immense power!!! :happy2:

Front wheel drive has its limits.
-
true, also looking to go away from front wheel drive :driver:

I've got the S4 4.2 V8. I like it but definitely prefer my Eddie. If u live anywhere near Manchester/Warrington then ur more than welcome to come and have a look around it or I'll take u out in it so u can get the feel of what they are like. Oh and it's the convertible so maybe different from a saloon but I don't think it'd be a massive difference
-
Echoing the above:
Prefacelift S5 coupes were V8s
All S5 Sportbacks/Cabrios and thr facelift coupe and all B8 S4s are supercharged V6s (tho for some reason they have V6T on their wings :stupid:)
I read somewhere that a Stage 1 "V6T" could outhandle the RS5 due to the higher weight and still hold it's own in a straight line.
Personally I'd miss the V8 and have any of the V6T models

thanks loads for the offer but I'm in cornwall lol :sad1: however my gf does come from manchester and we visit a few times a year so ill deffo hit you up if we do in the next month or so! so far I'm leaning towards the S4 V6 gone right of the S5 now haha I'm not sure Robin i haven't seen the underside of the bonnet yet but ill be having at one hopefully this tuesday at the dealers to have a feel round.
so does anyone have any stats on tuning the S4? I'm pleased that a stage one seems so effective and its unlikely ill go much further than that because i don't want to start bringing the insurance back up again :/

whats the difference between the sports differential and the standard one may i ask?
-
The Audi a5 range... Heavy, and dead to drive. I can guarantee that an S5 will be less fun that a stage 1/2 ed30. (apart from the noise)
-

....Audi's 'Sports Differential' is a factory option added to some of their high end quattro cars.

... or they could have just developed a chassis that doesnt require all that mumbo jumbo...

.... The Mk5 Golf chassis immediately comes to mind.
I think the downside of quattro is that it can feel a bit dull and the Sports Differential did seem to liven up the feedback when driving harder. However, the Audi S-series market is more pedestrian consumer. It's the RS owners who are generally usually more enthusiastic but I guess that's why the Sports Differential is an option rather than standard on the S4, plus it's another opportunity for Audi to milk more money.
-
quattro downside is feedback is subdued due to additional weight and the way it operates, on the up sides you get all the grip in the world!
for both grip and driving pleasure RWD is the best compromise in my opinion, grip is better then FWD obviously and driving not so dead as AWD!
If I was to choose I would go for S4 as S5 is big and lumpy! It's one of worst performance/looks Audi products recently in my view!

What sort of mods can be done with a supercharged car, can they be mapped???
Never had any experience on this.

they respond similarly to turbo cars when it comes to remapping i believe.
just putting this out there: an A4/A5 2.0T quattro with the new engine (211bhp) remaps at Stage 1 to 305bhp (about 40bhp short of the S4, but it weighs less.)

You can also change the pulley on the supercharger too to increase da boooooost!

Yeh but you can just as easily remap the S4 to around 420hp and even more with pulleys, intake, exhaust etc.
-
Stop the press. Forget the cars. You have a girlfriend that you only visit a few times per year?
-
also the 2l T never really crossed my mind and seems it would be cheaper on many fronts, its just the sounds of a V6 it'd be lacking
-
I wouldn't get either. I'd get an RS4. Greeners has a stunner for sale for about 19K!
-

....Superb cars but you'd only get about 12 mpg when enjoying yourself and there's no point having such a car unless you enjoy yourself in it.

id love to get an RS4 and that one is superb but the insurance although is fine with an S4 or 5 still doesn't like the idea of an RS model and wanted 3k plus :surprised:
-

GTR, evo etc use similiar mumbo jumbo :happy2:
p.s
s4/s5 will bore you coming from a tuned ed30

i don't have a tuned ed30 just a standard gti, i wish i had got an ed30 but when i first got the gti i didnt know much about them and didn't know they had a different engine set up etc just thought they were limited with better aesthetic specs. don't really wanna sell the gti to get an ed30 either

School run 23mpg.
Cruise into work 27+mpg.
Spririted blast into work this morning including a duel with an XF-R = 24mpg........ :innocent:
-
How about an A5 3.0 TDi? Stage 1 goes over 300bhp with ludicrous torque, but still returns 35+ mpg even when 'having fun'? :driver:

I missing something here. Why on earth would a 24 year old want to drive a barge of a coupe, or a reps saloon car?

I agree, but fortunately we are all different people. :-)
-
Personally an rs4 is my dream car and im only 21 but unfortunately finance has been a problem due to my age so im sticking with my r32 for a few more years
-
Why shouldn't he want an s4 or s5 because he's 24 ? Age is irrelevant if he likes these cars .. I'm 25 and would happily have either of them over a hatchback ..

+1 (including the age bit)
-
My mates just had his 335D Stage 2'd at P-Torque - 355bhp and 520lb/ft, plus it handles well and the interior is gorgeous....

My V8 RS4 averaged approx 17mpg over 7000 miles! But they were great miles when I drove it. It did a lt of school runs in that.
That 420bhp S4 looks fun!
-
I'd get a Clio v6.
-
I'd get a Clio v6.
Live a little and get a Mk1 ditchfinder. :happy2:

Haha I'd love a mk1 but think father would kill me if I sold my mk5 for a mk1 :/ !
-
Not Golf, Clio V6.

No it doesn't...

In a focus rs 420bhp is all good though, not been in any higher bhp cars yet though !
On topic anyhoo personally id go for the s4 the s5 has never really done anything for me id hapily have the v8 with a milly fitted for an awesome noise or the supercharged v6 and tune it, although if i was your age i would be looking at cars that are much more exciting out the box
-

I've been playing out in a full spec Mountune Clubsport Focus RS with a 420 upgrade all weekend, simply awesome car... :happy2:

An s4 or an s5 at 24. It's a hard life aye
I'd get a 335d, it's a monster to drive!
-
i work hard i play hard :driver: haha

Yep agree there, the 335D is certainly a nice bit of kit. Not driven one with a remap but I can bet they're fun.
I'd like to get a 123D but I am trying to resist as i'm saving for a deposit on my first house. :fighting:
-
123D.... Boring to drive. Engine is as flat as a pancake.
335d.... Now that's what I REALLY want. Only the insurance is astronomical.
-
I echo other comments on the V8.. Nice sound but that's about it. They also seem to RR at well under their claimed output (probably why they are a lot slower than they claim to be).
Couple of quotes from MRC Tuning regards RS4's that have been in for work/heath checks..
"Health Check Run: 309ps 401nm. Fixed broken solenoids and leak: 362ps 429nm, MRC Stage 2 Remap and Filter: 391ps 460nm"
"Before Clean: 364ps 443nm. Cleaned, ported and MRC Stage2: 428ps 472nm"
"Stock car health check 387ps 437nm"
"371ps 412nm. Next: Carbon Clean, Ported Manifold, Precat Removal and Stage 2 MRC Remap."
The list goes on...
If you can stretch the pennies and want a S4/5 then I would head for the V6 SC'd lump..
