Title: Bigger turbo or uprate internals?

Which ones would give a more balanced car?

Uprating cams, boring out pistons to 2.2ltr, flowing/altering head (would you get more power from changing to the S3 head?)

or

Bigger turbo.

I'm not particularly interested in the car having oodles of power, I'd want the car to have balanced power at both ends of the rev range.

Is one more expensive than the other?

Should both be done?

Any guru's out there, share your wisdom! 8)

Uprated Internals FTW.

Bigger Turbo = More stress on current parts. Lag and possibly DSG issues.
Uprated Internals = Stronger engine. Better suited to cope with the current power loads thus reliablity and a bit of extra oomph.

if you want stupid power, sell the ED30 and turbo an R32, or even twin turbo  :evilgrin:

from my very little understanding of cams though doesnt if force where the torque/power must be?

ie you either have cams that focus on the low end OR the top end, there's no happy medium with it, therefore depending on cam choice will determine the best mods to compensate the loss at one end of the powerband?

edit: loss is the wrong word, no gain in comparison or less of it what i was trying to say

i don't think its worth doing one without the other really! i.e. Internals + big turbo not either or.

the OEM internals can just about cope with the K04 maxed out.

so whilst uprating them is good, you won't see much gain as the OEM turbo is at its limit of 360bhp.

so if you want more power, you need a bigger turbo. GT2871R is not bad with uprated internals, this should take you over 400bhp.

and internals i mean rods/pistons. Cams aren't really necessary on this engine, or boring it out to bigger capacity. The 2.0 block can give you plenty of power as long as you have some other "correct" bits added.

well looking at the way hurdy has modded his car, he can afford all the bits required i'm sure  :signLOL:

or some would say, just get a faster standard car to begin with!

You can't go to 2.2 with pistons alone, you would need a new crank etc and make a stroker kit to get that type of displacement, at the moment the max you can go with pistons alone is about 2.050 litre.. not really worth it for the money

In terms of head work, there isn't really a lot to come from it, especially when running with a K04 turbo, maybes a couple of hp up top thats it..

Big turbo is the only way forward in terms of making more power, with that you could go for an ATP 3071R kit and run around 425hp with standard internals..

If your after balanced power I wouldn't say to go with a big turbo kit, its no where near as progressive as the K04..

I would say max out the K04 first then see what you think..

So far, i think Jonnys advice is what I would go with... or, just sell the bloody Ed30 and get what you really need - a Nissan GT-R  :evilgrin: :evilgrin: :evilgrin: :evilgrin: :evilgrin:

... I think a Buggati Veyron is somewhat outside your price range otherwise I'd suggest you get one of those  :grin: :grin: :grin: :grin: :grin: :grin:

I'd say turbo too, these engine are pretty strong, you can also recoop some funds from the sale of the K04 setup ?

As per Jonny

If you want a balanced car then there's no replacement for displacement, squeezing all you can from the 2.0 will leave a peaky and laggy car as you keep pushing the power up the rev range. That's not a problem aslong as it matches your driving style.

Max the K04 or go for a blown .:R if you want a golf.
