Title: Extra Service + Other bits
Post by: R32UK on May 20, 2012, 07:45:37 pm
For some strange reason... my service notification came on last week, reading 1400 miles to next service. This however seemed to change from 1400 to service now! over that last day or so.

Checked the oil and its was at the bottom of the dipstick, so obviously topped this up.

Was planning on booking it for sometime this week, but also wanted to get a few extras done.

1. PCV

2. DV

3. Fuel filter

Just trying to get an idea of cost and if these will make any noticable difference to the car. I have to admit that it just doesnt feel as fast as it should do

REMAP

Seriously I think the service can change dependant on your driving style so if your tending to hoof it then it will go down quicker

 ... on a serious note I have been driving like miss daisy last few days (had my nephew in car). i can understand the service light being on but not sure why it feels so slow. could be the rawness of the mps possibly.

Remap will be coming later in the year after the *cough* points are removed *cough*

You managed to pick up a new motor yet Darren?

Spoke to dealers... they have no idea what a PCV valve or DV is  :ashamed:

About as helpful as you lot  :rolleye:

new DV costs about £40, and i've been charged an hour fitting on a K03 car. K04 cars would take less time

PCVs cost about £25, and i'd replace it myself if i were you. can be done on your driveway with simple tools.

not sure about the fuel filter. VW apparently say it's not a service item, but people on here have replaced them and definitely seen a difference. they're not expensive either.

at the end of the day you'll only really see a difference if those parts were broken in the first place, but considering they're inexpensive it would be worthwhile replacing them as they cost nothing.

for standard servicing I use main dealers only because they're more likely to foot the bill on out-of-warranty claims as a good will gesture if you have got a full main dealer history. but for little bits like you're describing you'll be better off going to a specialist. they'll be cheaper, they'll know why you want to replace them and will tell you if it's worth it or not/check if they're broken. if you're having problems they'll be able to fault find better than a stealer too.

Thats for that SUB!  :happy2:

I think thats what I will do.. Dealers for service, as the car came with full VW service history so would be a shame to spoil it. Then take the car to an independent specialist for the rest of the suff.

Good to have a rough idea of price though.. just to ensure I am not getting bent over  :drinking:

When I bought my fuel filter it was around £15-£20 and I'm sure it only took about 10 mins or so to change.

My ED30 is now 4 years old so had the BIG service done, my Cambelt/water pump and major service done a week ago and also got a PCV  from the VW main Stealers, PCV £35 ish (£15 for gasket which may be required, not in my case). Also bought the Revision D Diverter Valve from Awesome gti, £53,  as my main dealer was ADAMENT that I did not need one and even if I did it should be the Revision G (fitted the DV myself).  After reading a thread on here only 2 weeks ago had VW change the Fual filter, £21. Seemed silly not to after 50k miles. Guess what, VW also told me it did not need replacing, only on the soot chuckers.
Forgetting the cambelt, water pump and service and parts the extra labour worked out at 1/2 hour for PCV and Fuel pump.
Have I noticed any difference, not really! Believe all the parts I changed (as a preventative measure before adding more power) were all still absolutely fine.

Funny... because Im getting told the same thing, that none of the above need changing. So I even phone the local independent VW garage and they said its a myth that the PVC, DV and fuel filter will need changing.

Even stated that its a forum rumour  :scared:

So... the dealers dont know about any of this. The indie knows about it but says its a rumour from the internet  :fighting2:

^^^^  :signLOL:

My VW Main Stealers said exactly the same thing, blaming forums with "lack of knowledge" and "dud information" blah blah blah. I just TOLD THEM nicely but firmly to change the fuel filter and PCV even if they were fine. I even had a lecture about not tuning and about my ITG Induction Kit and the dangers to the engine. Truly unbelievable.

Find a local independant specialist that understands this engine, will get far better service at sensible prices.

We can do a DV change including setting car up on the ramps and swapping over, back on its wheels in 20 mins including a fault code check.

It just a shame you guys are so far away, and i need my car on a daily basis  :sad1:

Will may be look to get it to stealers first to see what they say... then across to the independent after to insist on changing those bits.

Thanks for the assistance  :notworthy:

OK.. it settled the car will not be going to VW. After numerous promised call backs, no one was able to tell me the price. In fact it turned into a joke when they said the 2.0 petrol engines do not have fuel filters. Only the diesels have them  :surprised:

The service manager also spoke to numerous technicians and NOT ONE of them had heard of a PVC/DV/fuel filter for the GTI.  :fighting:

Will now be going to Skoda and the extra £65 saved will be going in my beer fund  :drinking:

Beggers believe when I hear things like this about main dealers, luckily enough there are really good indie VAG specialised out there (many on this forum) who know the TSFI engine backwards.

Yes I really do need to find a decent independent around the leeds area... I probably would of had much more done to my car by now if it wasnt down to this little fact.  :sad1:
