Title: anyone had an achilles tendon operation?
Post by: berg on May 21, 2012, 08:38:14 pm
been getting pain for a good few years now and physio, acupuncture and steroid injection never really done the job.

the orthopaedic surgeon seems to say the prospects of success are only about 50/50 as cutting into the tendon could weaken it and mor elikely to have a rupture  :scared:

bugger really, as dont want to give up 5 a side but am 34 now and cant see me playing much past 40 at this rate  :sad1:

Nope, but I've been suffering from an Achilles injury for over a year now. Can't run without it flaring up and wake most mornings in a fair bit of pain. I've never investigated surgery but I'm disappointed to hear its not a fail-safe solution.

no its not a good op apparently mate.

they cut you open and scrape out any scar tissue/other sh*te they can see, stitch you back up and then see what happens. you run the risk of infection and/or nerve damage. it is different if you actually have a rupture as they have to operate to fuse it back together but if you have no rupture and just achilles tendinopathy like me it seems a massive risk as you may be no better or even worse!

i should do stretches every day need to get in the habit..

I've tried the ultrasonic therapy but it seemed to offer only temporary relief.

Have you seen a podiatrist or anything to look at your feet? Ultrasound, anti-inflammatories, stretches, eccentric loading and then strengthening is your best bet!

If you have had it for a couple of years, something underlying must be irritating it with flare ups as it never has settled

Do you get any relief, For instance if you gave up 5 a side for a couple of months would you feel any let up?

It's such a sh*tty injury. The way most physiotherapists talk about it there is little hope, and that the only way to alleviate it is to rest it. My fitness has really suffered as a result of it, and there's further knock effects from that.

i have had it for 6 or 7 years.

last year i missed football for 3 weeks as got married. i hoped the rest would do it good.

whilst on honeymoon it went worse  :sad1:

but was not sure whether this was because i was actually doing more exercise than usual on a day to day basis as was walking round boston and new york for miles or whether it did'nt like the not being used or 8 hr flight.

it even hurt when i tried cycling cause when you had to touch down with your toe when you stopped at a junction it really hurt. dont really like swimming  :indifferent:

Tendon problems can last for ages unfortunately, as you already know  :ashamed: You should be wearing good supportive shoes too  :happy2:

Definitely see a podiatrist.  They may be able to prescribe u special inner soles.  I suffered Achilles tendinitis when I was younger and had inner soles made up for me.  Touch wood I don't suffer anymore!!

it is such a pain as it holds you back psychologically cause you think "best not push on any harder, best not sprint for that ball" as you worry about rupture or just not being able to walk down the stairs the day after.

if the medical people said "dont do anything apart from swimming for a year" i would but they dont, they just dont seem to be able to say that stopping impact sports will actually cure it over time..

Do an exercise that doesnt aggrevate it as it sounds like you like to keep fit. Swimming, cycling (but avoid touching your toes down on that side)

Do you do any exercises for it at the moment?

As a football coach (not my day job :signLOL:) I've seen a fair few achilles problems. A trip to a podiatrist for a gait analysis can be very revealing but custom orthotics are expensive (£200 or so on top of the cost of the gait analysis) and aren't always the answer if the root cause is impact-related rather than something mechanical in the foot.

Has the consultant actually given you a diagnosis? Tendinitis and planar fasciitis are the most common problems.

Unless you are playing on grass or an AGP, running on any hard surface will aggravate any achilles problem, and that will lead on to problems with your knees over time. Unless you are spending lots on your boots the insoles won't be that good and they will also compress over time, so they are best replaced every few months.
Footdisc insoles are very good, I have a few players who found they made all the difference, including me. Nothing to do with me other than as a satisfied customer.

What did your Physio recommend as far as fitness activities were concerned? My injury was sustained running and I'm itching to get back into it. Sometimes my ankle feels like it's up to it but I'm still nervous that I'll only aggravate it. I'm guessing with a tendon injury all pain is bad pain too.

yeah i have some stretching eercisrs and ill be honest i do them every time befor ei play but not every day like i should  :fighting:

i have a nice long letter from the consultant with diagnosis will dit it out and summarise if for you physiotherapists/fitness coaches.

i do play on a wooden gym floor not astroturf and as you say am sure this is not helping.

footdiscs eh will have a look at those.

andrew - impact sports are basically going to aggravate it but if you do nothing it can seize up in my experience. ice baths are probably good but not tried them yet!

Ok so he was playing football and if it was where I used to play, its astroturf.

Off the ball he started a light jog towards the action and he just collapsed.

No agravation it just went ping and after a good 20 minutes.

He said he could 'move' his foot but it wasn't moving!

I think he had six months on his arse with his leg/foot in a cast which had to have the angle adjusted every couple of weeks to 'stretch' the re attached tendon.

He put on 2 stone and went from 20 a day to 40!

Was this totally out of the blue, or was he exercising with an injury?
