Title: Noise on idle when in gear
Post by: Gazza747 on May 22, 2012, 12:45:31 pm
I have had my gti for a few months and have a noise and i'm not sure if it is normal.

When I take my foot off the accelerator and let the car slow down in gear there is a low pitched noise that sounds like the exhaust is loose. When it's out of gear there is no noise, when the clutch is in there is no noise and when accelerating there is no noise.

Is this normal?

Is it a rumble, squeek, rattle?

I thought I would add that I only heard the noise as I had the window down. It is quite loud with the window down but with the window up you can't really hear it.

Looking at other posts that mention DMF issues I don't think it's that. I have a years warranty from VW so will take it in Saturday and get them to listen. It happens all of the time when slowing in any gear with feet off the clutch and accelerator.

I had all the windows down today and had a good listen and it does sound like the exhaust. Since I got the car a few months ago the exhaust did sound louder than I expected, although it's not that loud (on idle out of gear and stationary). As soon as I take my foot off the throttle now (while moving) it starts to make a rattle noise. I'm not sure VW would cover an airbox under warranty?

Finally decided to go to VW with the rattle noise, it only happens when engine breaking and is a clattering noise. Fortunately it's quite loud so the mechanic heard it when we went for a drive. When he took it away and looked into it he said it was a lot louder from the drivers side.
He said it was the waste gate chattering that was causing the noise. He also said there was a fault code stating a loss of boost.

Does this sound right? Is this a common problem?

Any help much appreciated - it is booked in for the 28th August but would like to know a bit more if possible before it goes in.

Dropped the car off yesterday at VW. They are going to look into the issue and contact me when they find out what is wrong.

They had priced up a new turbo and it came to £1250. Does this sound right?

They said it should be covered by the warranty but could not guarantee it.

They also said that warranty claims above £500 needed extra evidence given to VW to allow them to carry out the work.

So here's waiting on the phone call...

Had a phone call from VW, they said it was the turbo that needs replacing. They will now see if it can be done under the 12month warranty.

Has anybody had a turbo replaced under warranty?
