Post by: Gazman1011 on May 24, 2012, 04:34:54 pm
Hi guys only noticed it today but there is a very faint whistle when I'm coming thought the revs. What could it be. Is my turbo on its way out. Thanks

Have you checked the diverter valve for tears as this will do the same through the revs. Mine was like it for ages then changed the DV and all fine

Depends what GTI you have, normal GTI it's located to the rear of the drivers wheel arch and ed30 etc is located on top if the engine iirc

I replaced my whining turbo at 55k thinking it was dying, seemed ok on removal.

Replacement (brand new at time) is doing the same after 16k. Even though I always let oil circulate before revving, engine get up to temp before driving full pelt, and let it idle for a good few seconds before switching off.

My wife's Altea also whistles faintly, as does the 6 month old A1 car I have at minute.

I know there are tonnes of bad stories but I'm starting to believe it's a trait of VAG turbo's.

If you're worried, keep on top of oil changes and have a good garage check out  the turbo and your hoses (for leaks).

Yea well I don't rev it when it's cold. And don't do much before its up to temp. When I turn on engine I let it turn over for min or so before I drive. And don't turn it straight off. I'll get it in have a good service see what comes I think. Thanks
