I have retro fitted cc in both swmbo's GT and my vRS but just lately the one in the vRS is playing up, it will randomly turn off and can not be reactivated until the engine is turned off and on again?! Then last week it wouldn't come on at all? It was a used stalk but in excellent (new condition) and was initially fine, I understand you can pull the back of the stalk and disassemble to clean the unit.
If I have to get a new stalk is it a simple case of refitting, or will the car need recoding?
Cheers, Lee.

I had this with mine and it might just be dirty contacts. I bought some contact cleaner and cleaned the switch internals. I'll post a link tomorrow morning (unless someone beats me to it) as by the time I get home you'll be asleep. ;)

From what I have read on here it the bad contacts syndrome only sewed to affect the older stalks. Think the newer ones have the speedo sign like this:

Also do you have any/scanned for fault codes? I know my mk4 pd150 wouldnt let the cruise work as there was a fault with the brake pedal switch. This is also tied in with the clutch switch too so if either are pressed it knocks the cruise off.

Here's the two links.
First in Danish, but plenty of pictures. (http://vwfanatic.dk/Tips/Golf5GRA.html)

It's a prime example of why I don't think it's worth buying used stalks.
You can swap it out, no coding required just clear the faults after.

^^^^^ this!
I've had problems with cruise on both my golfs. It's the flimsy 'contact' based design, they should have used a more sealed design.

Nice, did you buy a new one or was it a warranty job? The contact cleaner was only 4 quid so happy with that.

I used SWMBO's nail varnish remover, worked a treat. Been OK for about 1.5 years since I cleaned it.
