Our up-and-over garage door has started flaking paint. Now looks like dandruff.
Anyway, I plan to sand it back down to the metal but am after recommendations for primer/base and top coats. Hammerite is poorly rated so I'm after something more durable.
Recommendations?

After you have rubbed it down really well Johnstones Weatherguard Primer then top coat. Don't put the top coat on too heavy as it will run and do it when its damp on the ground so you don't get any dust, grit blown onto it. Two coats of top coat , guaranteed for 6 years....

If it's galvanised use this:
http://www.wedge-galv.co.uk/Galvacoat.aspx
It's a 2-pack paint and is what I have used (with perfect results). I had to go to a galvanisers to get it and it cost about £50 (yes really!) for one large and one small pot - the 2 packs which you need to mix.
Don't use Hammerite.

I use Zinsser Coverstain primer/blocker to prime any bare metal on garage doors, followed by a coat of Sikkens Rubbol PrimerPlus, and then 2 topcoats of Sikkens Rubbol Gloss (black or red tin, both are brilliant). lightly key between coats using a medium Oakey foam sanding pad. I did a block of 4 double garages for a client 7 years ago and the paint is still as good as gold. Oh, and putting the garage door up for the day after final coat will prevent sagging and dirt/insects getting blown onto it. :happy2:

iv always used Hammerite special metals primer on bare metal and its been a success tbh, iv used it on various galvanised roller shutter doors, garage doors and gates over the years and its performed great.
i used it on my own gates approx 4 years ago followed by 2 coats of Coovar ebony black and they still look great with no cracking, flaking or peeling etc.
iv seen no end of galv garage doors flaking due to incorrect priming
