Title: Old Shape S3
Post by: Alexander on May 30, 2012, 02:58:17 pm
I need to release a bit of cash so I'm toying with selling my 2.0tdi A3 Sportback. I've also been driving my old mk5 GTI recently and miss the power!

I've found a few old shape S3's for around 4.5-5k that look pretty tempting! Does anyone know much about them? Is it a silly idea?

It's a very good engine, but a very old chassis now, you could pick up another mk5 for not much more which is what I would do

Thanks for the comments, I would agree with you all but don't really want to spend more than £5k or its not worth selling the audi and would be better to find the cash somewhere else. I've kind of talked myself out of the S3 idea now anyway! Is there any other decent options petrol or derv out there for £5k?

what do you want from the car?

Sporty: E46 Coupe (320d or 325i)
Comfortable: W220 S-Class (320CDIs or 500s come in budget and are the best)
Practical: B6 Audi A4 2.5TDI Avant

Trouble is I'm not sure I really know what I want! In an ideal world it would be a 4x4 or another GTI! The audi is good for the commute and saves me a lot of fuel but I find it a pretty dull car to own.
Thanks for the suggestions, I think I'll have a look at a few of them and try and get a drive as thats the only real way to tell!

Just for your interest I'll give you an insight into my last few cars!

Land Rover Defender TD5
Mk5 Golf GTI
Land Rover Discovery 3
Audi A3 TDI

in that order! The pattern would suggest I am due another LR but I need to try and live in the real world!

i'd just mod the crap out of the A3 if i'm honest lol

put the later front end on it with the LED DRLs (that'll cost about £3.5k) and then spend the oter £1.5k on suspension and a remap  :driver:

I'd love to but I need to be releasing money from the A3 not spending money on it!

Get the 3.2 S3, good car and an easy 400 bhp in reach, put a supercharger on it and as said a modern front end and bobs your uncle. Beware as there was a dodgy S3 on Autotrader recently in your price range. Some scammer trying it on. Was mentioned on here somewhere.

Still one of best vag cars IMO, when I got mine nothing could touch it really, looked good, 4 doors, the 225 engine, a3 dash, great wheels and brembos.

I'd go for either

Cupra R 225 53 plate 4K (Great shout)
E46 330Ci 02 plate 4K
Golf V6 4Motion 02 plate 3K (amazing traction and sounds fabulous)
Honda S2000 51 plate 4.5K
Renault Cliosport 197 06 plate 4.5K
E46 330Ci Clubsport 03 plate 5K
