Got some H&R springs off hufc for the S3, gonna fit them myself at the weekend, anyone got any top tips, the set-up at the front is similar to the mk5 so any help appreciated :happy2:
-
Back 1's should pop out a doddle mate but be careful with the front 1's my friend who did the ed30 had a bit of bother on the front's along with when he did my other mates s3 had to take the driveshaft off on the drivers side and drop the hub other than that it went well
-
do you know why pal, could he not get enough clearance to get the damper out of the hub?
-
^^^ The rears won't be as easy as the Mk5 Toast as he's almost a 4x4
The front driveshalf nut's has a nighmare to get off on mine, I had to jump in the car with my foot firmly on the brakes while the guy who fitted gave it his all with the breaker bar :scared:
-
If you use a set of these style compressors on the front you will have no probs and no need to remove drive shaft:-

I managed to do the rear without disconnecting the anti-roll bar but was a pain on my own!

the rears are just as easy, the spring and shock are seperate just like the mk5
-
^^^ That's a result then, it took about 5 minutes to fit the rears on mine and 1 1/2 to do the front

I have had mine for years and they work a treat as you can compress the whole spring. Also go the Halfrauds Card!

Just be very careful with spring compressor's folks. Every mechanic at some point will of had one slip. My head had a lucky escape with a motorbike shocker once that I had to compress a fair bit.
Just take it very steady when tightening them and make sure you apply compression evenly to both sides. Dont just tighten one up and then the other. Simple job but if things are done wrong it can end up messy.

Wise words!!
Also, make sure that you have all the correct size torque bolts etc and some are a funny size as i found out

Yes indeed, one of my friends still has a limp after the compressor slipped off and the spring flew into his knee. That was about 5 years ago!
-
well did it today, no mis-haps, quite enjoyed it, really pleased with the results, pics later :happy2:

OK fitted the springs today, and enjoyed doing it, was going to do a thread of how to do it but once I got going I couldn't stop
I've always been a bit apprehensive about just changing the springs and using the OE dampers, would normally uprate both or go coilovers, but money is a bit tight and I bagged these H&R springs of HUFC for decent money so I thought I'd give them a go, and if they weren't any good change them at a later date.
Well I'm really impressed with the results, people have said before when changing from OE springs to uprated that the ride is better and I've been a bit sceptical, with these H&R's it is, the bumps are more controlled, less choppy and there is less body roll.
Its has really toughened the look of the car up and the wheels fill the arches perfectly, maybe now Tom and Joe will get off my back about lowering it
