Title: Opinions on oil
Post by: Mark_GTIV on May 21, 2009, 11:38:50 am
Hi there,

So having gone to stage 2, I've decided to stop the Longlife schedule (and the Castrol Powerflow oil that comes with it) and go to a fixed schedule for security.

What oil is everyone using?

I was thinking about using Mobil 1 0w/40 fully synthetic . It's got the appropriate VW approvals etc.

Its OK but API certified fully synth isn't as good as the EU body certified fully synth.  European oils are much more advanced.  Best sticking to a high quality oil like Castrol / Fuchs

You are best changing your service interval to T&D like you have, but still use the castrol long life oil. This subject has come up many times and this is what most choose to go with.

Interesting opinions - THANKS!

All the Saab guys on Saabscene reckon that running on Castrol is what gives them sludge build up problems - so they avoid it like the plague.

Porsche have recommended Mobil 1 for donkey's years for it's cars. Pretty solid recommendation for their quality.

Anyone have any opinions on Shell Ultra Helix ?

Using Castrol Edge 5w-30. Oil changes every 5,000 miles

After doing a bit of research, I found this post particularly useful :

I've decided to continue running the Castrol SLX Powerflow Longlife III SAE 5W-30 50400/5070 oil but have now changed from Longlife service interval to fixed Distance&Time @ every 15,000 KMs.

My mate has found it hard to get castrol III, as some dealers are using shell helix, and some using Quantum synta.
My Bro-in-law is a lab rat at castrol (ellesmere port) he says the SLX III is now made in germany,
so its easier to get shell/quantum.   Which he says is the same anyway, just repacked with VW markings on the bottles.
which ever my stealer use, i get the bro-in-law to get me free.
the last serv mine had was done with helix (stealers)

Mobil 1 is NOT fully synthetic, and Mobil 1 0w40 does NOT comply with the appropriate VW approvals for FSI engines - both dispite what Mobil claim on the bottle.  UB7RM nailed it!

And pray, do tell us which Saabs use Fuel Stratified Injection engines?

Porsche have recommended Mobil 1 for donkey's years for it's cars. Pretty solid recommendation for their quality.

I very much doubt that.  Porsches are factory filled with Fuchs.  Porsche may use Mobil 1 as a sponsor, but they dont use it in their sumps!

Anyone have any opinions on Shell Ultra Helix ?

Better than Mobil 1, not as good as Castrol or Fuchs or Motul.

My mate has found it hard to get castrol III,

Castrol LongLife III is the 'trade' version of the 504.00/507.00 oil, and is exactly the same as Castrol Edge which is the 'consumer' version.

as some dealers are using shell helix,

Not a problem.  John Fox I believe have a Shell bulk oils contract.

and some using Quantum synta.

SERIOUS PROBLEM.  Firstly, Quantum oils are NOT approved for ANY Volkswagen (or any VAG marque) official franchised workshop by Volkswagen Germany.  ONLY 'top-tier' OEM spec oils are approved for workshop use - which include Fuchs, Castrol, Shell, and sadly Mobil.  Secondly, Quantum Synta is NOT a LongLife oil, not even a LL2 oil - it is only semi synthetic, and will ruin both FSI petrols and PD diesels, because it only has the jurrasic spec 500.00/505.00 !!!!

My Bro-in-law is a lab rat at castrol (ellesmere port) he says the SLX III is now made in germany,

What is wrong with Germany?  What about all the VW Group parts, and the VW Group cars - dont they all come from Germany too!?  Don't forget, Castrol owned the highly rated German 'Veedol' brand, and Castrol is actually owned by BP - who have probably the largest buying power of all the European oil companies!

so its easier to get shell/quantum.   Which he says is the same anyway, just repacked with VW markings on the bottles.

Shell is completely separate to Castrol/BP, and is NOT a repackaged Castrol brew.  Quantum are made by Castrol, but they are ONLY authorised for independent workshops.  But Quantum brews are NOT identical to the Castrol brews.

which ever my stealer use, i get the bro-in-law to get me free.

Well if you get Shell free, you'd be rude to turn it down.  But I'd personally still stick with just one brand of oil, simply for consistency and accountability.  If I could have got hold of a 60 litre barrel of Fuchs, then that is what I would be using now - but only Castrol was able to supply 60 barrels (my workshop is too small for 208 litre drums and they would fcuk up my back anyway)

Not a fan boy of Mobil1 (as noted : I run Castrol Long Life III in my GTI on Time and Distance service programming as recommended).. but as regards the conversation about Porsche .. Porsche absolutely recommend Mobil 1 in their road cars. The engine bay always carries the Mobil 1 recommended sticker from the factory.

Also, separating the 'sponsorship' discussion, all the factory Porsche race cars run Mobil1.

as per : http://www.porsche.com/international/motorsportandevents/motorsport/partner/cooperationpartner/mobil1/

Anyhoo.. just wanted to point that out as when I write on a forum I like to try to be factually accurate... perhaps not relevant.. but factually accurate  :happy2:  :innocent:

Interesting . . . I'm pretty sure that when I went to Zuffenhausen a couple of years ago, they told me the Mobil was just a sponsorship, and that their bulk oil supply to the initital fill was Fuchs . . . . now I am confused . . .

I can confirm that Mobil 1 is the Porsche oil...

I believe it is an SL spec (Possible SM now) but it is one of the few oils that have approvals for the Porsche 911 Turbo which is where it is predominantly used. Companies like Liqui Moly etc have far superior oils to Mobil 1 with the same Porsche approvals.

I think Mobil 1 is like an overrated pornstar....  :chicken:
