Title: advice needed on buying an Edition 30
Post by: pisquano on June 06, 2012, 04:39:18 pm
hi everyone - new member here!
I am looking to buy an Edition30 soon, but am not too sure about what to look for when seeing one.
are there any common faults or things to check? also are there any key extras? I don't really care for the satnav but I do for parking sensors for instance.

I have found a good one (2 previous owners, less than 40K miles), but it's some 60 miles away from where I live (London), so the prospect is that I would have to have it inspected by AA or similar, and then go and buy on the spot after trying it: does anyone have any advice when buying a car from private, when you simply cannot have it inspected by your local garage?

thanks a lot!!
Federico

Hello,do a full HPI check on the car to make sure it has'nt been involved in any accident's or have any outstanding finance on it,you are right in getting the AA or a somebody to do a full check on the car and also check the car for full service history and make sure all the work has been carried out at a reputable dealer or garage, one last thing make sure the car is seen at the registered owner's address and he is the owner on the logbook, then after all that get ready to spend some serious cash on modding it!

If you want to have the car inspected I would recommend surfing the web for alternatives to the AA, RAC etc.  There are some companies/people in the trade who offer the same if not better services for much less money.  Stick 'vehicle inspections' into Google and your postcode and it should come up with a list of them.  These companies will usually travel a good distance to do an inspection.

My advice is if you have ANY doubts walk away....Make sure your HPI check is a FULL check as several are not. Do not pay cash if possible . Only meet the seller at his home address and ensure it is their home (ask to use the toilet or a glass of water) . Have a price in mind and don't pay more than that

thanks a lot guys
I am a bit more doubtful

I've tried one yesterday (from a dealer in Slough) and the gearbox had something wrong...everytime going from 3rd to 2nd it felt really stiff...noticeably so it felt weird.

so I let it go... it still sold the very same day!!! go figure....better safe than sorry.
but I also tried a "regular" GTI immediately after, and I have to say that I confirm the impression others had: the std GTI feels a bit quicker at lower revs/ the ed30 then catches up and it's a pleasure to drive around 4, 5K revs where its larger turbo shines through...

but I am wondering if for town driving (central london) the regular GTI would be a wiser choice?
I have eyed another ed 30 but it's been tuned and I am not so sure...

I don't know what spec you are looking for, but I've just put my ED30 up for sale.
I am also based near London. In fact only 20 mins from Slough.
