Bit of a strange one this, particularly for a 33 year old father of two, but I've noticed on several occasions recently being followed by police cars whilst out and about, and I'm just wondering why!
The first instance I noticed a police car signalling to turn right onto the main round I was travelling down. After I passed them they changed direction and followed me for 4 miles before swinging round a roundabout and going in the direction they came. I thought it was very unusual, particularly as there are many junctions and roundabouts to be negotiated on the route I took. Then this morning I followed a police car for about half a mile which then pulled in, let me past then proceeded to follow me, again for 3 - 4 miles before seemingly turning round.
Has anyone else noticed this?
p.s I don't want this to turn in a slagging thread, I know there is a probably a perfectly understandable reason for this behaviour.
-
If you worried, you could go to your local cop-shop and ask if there's anything untoward registered on the car... bought it recently?
I'm sure it's just a case they see the car and expect you to drive madly...
-
Could be coincidence.
Or maybe a GTI of similar colour to yours has been involved in a crime in the local area so they follow you whilst they are running some checks. Then you come up clean so they get on with what they were doing in the first place.
-
I get followed on a regular basis, as a 39 year old father of 2 I wouldn't expect it it, however I am glad for the interest because one day they may be following a barryboy who has stolen my car!
-
Just checking that the vehicle is not showing as stolen and that it has tax etc on ANPR. I think you should be pleased I guess.
I used to get pulled loads in my 205 Gti when I worked night shifts, the response was "just checking where you were going in a nice quick car like this at this time of night"

Yeah, that's a good point, it just makes me feel uneasy that my car generates interest in that sort of way. May be a should stop next time and have a chat with them!
-
:signLOL: Put your foot down see if they follow.
Im 23 and get followed a lot.

Good idea . I would suggest that there is a similar car to yours involved in crime locally to you

Living in Huddersfield this comes as no surprise!

sometimes it will depend on where you are driving from and at what time. The one time I got pulled over was when I was driving away from the town centre on an early Friday evening. They said they were checking that I hadn't been drinking (which I hadn't) They too changed their mind to follow me, turning left out of a right only lane while on a red light! but decided to follow me for a couple of miles before pulling me over!
But if you haven't done anything wrong I find it reassuring that they do this kind of thing, although probably not enough to stop people driving illegally!
-
It's always been on the way to work, so between 8.30am and 9.30am, and has always happened from the same area of town.
-
I used to get pulled all the time when I was younger (Ridiculously often at average 5 times a week), I went to local cop shop and filed a harrassment case against them, I never got pulled again for 15 years! :happy2:
I would not mind, young chap driving nice car, but was always full legit, every time they pulled me they gave me a "Producer" to "Record" my documents, it was this little box being ticked that ensured my harrassment case was held up as It was easy to see they held my details but pulled me anyway, I mentioned how their records system must be pretty crap as they had to record them every day or 2!!.
Regards your car, it could be a marker from a previous owner who maybe did not have insurance at some point or had a marker for drugs etc, yu can go to police station and ask them to remove any markers as you are the new owner and dont want any hassle or like being followed!
Been followed once in last 15 years by police, i let it go for half a mile but when I made 2 turns and he matched me I pulled over in next layby, got out and lit a Ciggie, he pulled in behind me and asked why I had stopped?, I just laughed and held up my Ciggie :happy2: he took a quick glance at my tyres and off he went!, that was 3 years back and not been stopped since :signLOL:

Aren't GTIs still one of the most stolen cars in Manchester/Yorkshire?
Extra attention is to be expected.
-
Ah i travel to yorkshire alot in my GTI and stay in not the nicest of areas :scared:
Better keep the keys close to me next time lol.
-
I believe there was gang going round specifically targeting VW/Audi cars with RNS510 fitted in Yorkshire, cannot remember if it was Leeds/Bradford area
-
I get it all the time in my area, I'm 21 and have 2008 ed30, I think it may just be that a golf gti is a pretty sought after car and they do get stolen alot, I suppose it can be good IE checking the cars not reported as stolen or it could be there bord and fancy nicking a golf driver :signLOL:

really?
I know its a favourite getaway car for criminals, expecially 5 doors.

I think there maybe some truth in that..
As the detailer was cleaning my car on the drive, a police van pulled up and started questioning him about the car. They were specifically driving around and looking for cars they liked, to warn the owners and record where they are for future reference. This was about 2months ago.
I was pulled over 2 weeks ago on my way home around 11:30pm. Reason being it was late and I was driving a "little bit fast, but its ok no one was around". One thing I will say is those 5series diesel bmw's are might fast :scared:
I dont mind getting pulled if there are genuine reasons... but coppers doing it just to nit pick is not on.

They were just stealing the RNS510's, the car was left behind, it was an easy £350-400 for 5 mins theivin :fighting:

Ah.. this was specifically for cars. Although my mates sat nav was stolen from his RS4 a couple of months back. First day he bought it :surprised:
-
I'd wager 50% of Recaro interiors are from stolen cars too. When rare and high value items are being fought over by enthusiasts, and when there's a very easy and pretty much anonymous way of selling - there's suddenly a lot of value in getting some smack head to stove a door in for some keys..

Yup, I live in Manchester often see myself getting checked out by local lads and police. I have copies of everything in glove box along with my work I'd, had to chat to many police where I live about my car.

Can't see your link..... What stats fail to show is how they are calculated. Most stats are able to say what you want them to say. For example if every car on the road was a Ford Mondeo guess what the most stolen can would be ! With VW Golfs they do not shiow what models are stolen . Now we all know that car security has improved greatly over the last few years. VW's are made very well and alot of older versions are still out there modified etc. These are the Golfs that are stolen and generaly for the parts to be stripped. New versions of the Golf are rarely stolen. :innocent:

VW Golfs do not get stolen alot......
Have any stats to back that up?
I work for an insurance company and they are in our top 6 cars stolen in the UK.....
-
Most cars registered in the UK ? Where does the VW Golf come ? If they were all stolen equally they would appear in the top ten too ? Simple answer . I have the stats to prove. You obviously have too. These are not available to the public....Where does the VW Golf come in the amount of cars on the road ? and then Mr Insurance man look at what years of VW's are stolen , very few newer ones ? Yes ? and if they are so sought after why have i just paid £184.44 for fully comprehensive for my Ed30 ? Insurance companies do not miss a trick to sting the customer.... EVER . I work for some too . Just look at the numbers of them on the road ....For example i was in a queue of traffic the other day and there were six cars in a row out of 7 that were Golfs . None of them were a GTI's either . Now if we were on a MK1 /2/3 GTI forum there would be another argument

I got followed (nearly) home about a year ago in my Mk4 Golf by the police. I had a chip on my shoulders (for some reason I can't remember) at the time so I pulled into the road to my house, got out the car and walked back to the door of the police car (that had pulled in behind me). He wound down his window and I had the surreal priviledge of questioning them. Turns out I'd passed them earlier in the night and had shown 'significant interest in their car' (an Astra Panda car) so they decided to follow me 'just incase'. :stupid: They wouldn't tell me why they were going to stop me, I sorta had them on the back food by stopping first and asking the question.
Think that was the last time I've been stopped, been behaving myself recently.

When I was in my 20's I had a 4wd Sapphire Cosworth, now I was expecting attention but not to the level I received, practically every day I had a shadow, until one night I was blue lighted, the car was literally rummaged on the road side and I was thinking an anal search was coming my way!!! :surprised:
It turned out that the guy I brought the car from was a notorious drug dealer in the area - hence the unwanted attention!!!
-

Yep this is correct :happy2:
-
Its the only way to get hold of a Policeman in our area, if your house gets burgled they take three days to arrive, if they even bother. Best way to get hold if a law officer is to simply drive down the main road and two marked cars will be found together with yer traditional unmarked ford focus.
If you really want to talk to them try putting your phone to your ear or maybe have a mis placed digit on your number plate they'll be on you like a flash but at least you can then report the house break in.
Have to say since changing to the 330d from my gti I've had little or no attention from the splendidly efficient traffic team in my area.
-
tbh it can be hit and miss with the police, i decided in my first 2 mins how im going to act with them.
often have i had a great laugh when them, was stopped last week when me and a friend had stopped for a smoke in a car park, when questioned i told him we wanted a cig but i wouldnt smoke in the car, so we stopped. he simply said 'fair enough can i join you' sparked up his own cig, checked my docs and carried on chatting to us for about 40mins.
pleasent nice guy who had my respect the who time.
had another one in my last car were the officer came out the car all guns blazing and treating me like a fool, i handed him my documents and informed him i would be exercising my right to silence and any questions he had for me would need to be asking in a interview with a solicitor present.
yes i was being a arse but he rubbed me up the wrong way so he got what i thought he deserved, as far as im concerned i treat everyone with respect untill they give me a reason not to and i hope people do the same in return. as my grandmother always said manners cost nothing
-
I one got a police escort all the way back to my house in Harrow followed me for 1-2miles. It was quite late... about 2am... I figured that they saw young (attractive :signLOL: ) male in hot hatch and thought they would just run a ANPR check on it to see if it was going back to where its registered at.
No harm done at all :happy2:
-
Does anyone else have any more info on the stolen rns's?Reason I ask is because while I was purchasing some new speakers and wave guides I mentioned to the bloke in shop that I'm gonna fit and rns or the non nav unit and he said be very careful, there's loads of stolen ones about?!
-
I'm always getting followed home by the police, although my girlfriend is one so that doesn't count.
I also have a certain sticker in my rear window so other cops don't bother me, it's useful when you go blasting past an unmarked car as they just ignore me. I wouldn't like to test it against traffic cops though, they even nick there own!!
-

Silly handshakes and the like :rolleye:. Im sure someone will be along to explain shortly ROFLMAO

It took me nearly 3 years to be pulled over in the GTI (last month for a plate validity check by a marked 5 series) even as a youthful looking 25 year old myself
It's bizarre as I was pulled over three times in one month when I had my first car when I was 18 which admittedly deserved a bit of attention and monitoring
Never notice my local traffic dept. pay any extra attention in anyone really - there's not enough of them for starters IMO :sad1: ...and probably their opinion too.
-
When I was younger I always used to get pulled over in my polo gti, think the police would dilibrately try to find fault or a reason, to pull me. When I had the golf gti got followed a few times but never pulled over. Touch wood! I ve been left alone since I got my Scirocco.
-
I've never been pulled over in my GTI, but followed a few times - I live quite close to a Police college and they're often out and about on the roads nearby, but never a bit of bother..maybe they're all just training cars
As for the set square and sextant, most young police on the beat these days wouldn't know what you were on about if you called them brother and asked if they were 'on the level'
-
oh, masons!!! Are they still about, bet none are under 50 years old.
-

:happy2:
-
No mate, i'm sure there are still some old boys knocking about but it's nothing like that now. They don't even get free travel on public transport any more.
-
Iv got a good one. One of the young lads at my work has a chavy little clio black car black wheels black windows. Now the car is 100% legal and the other day he got followed by a unmarked BMW because he said it came flying up behind him and followed him for 7 miles before pulling him over. He was obv waiting for him to speed or something. So anyway pulled him over reason been to check his car over. Check it all and only thing he could think of was to check the front windows as they were down! Asked him If he knew the tinting law and asked him to put them up. He got his testing kit and didn't know how to use it so rang the station to get directions ( o dear ) then check them. they are the factory glass not tinted as he did not want this hassle. He finished and told him that he could give him a fixed penilty notice because it was to clear :jumping: because he didnt know the law he said erm sorry so he drove off.
To light :surprised: someone correct me of I'm wrong but what a load of tod!! No reason bobbys get a bad name for themselfs!!
-
Followed for 7 miles hey and then you believed all the other drivvle about the story. A bit boring but yet another slag off the police story !
-
There are some f*cking idiots in the police force, I used to get stopped at least once a week when I was young, sometimes I was up to no good, others I was just minding my own. On police cars these days they have an onboard camera and computer that automatically scans every plate and an alert flashes up if the car is uninsured etc.
-

....Isn't that the sign of the secret society of male G-string wearers?
I don't have any bad or resentful feelings against the Police, but quite the contrary. I've been followed lots of times by unmarked cars and stopped but never had a fine or points from them. The marked car guys are only doing their jobs. A friend of mine is one, so I understand and respect their point of view.
-

If He had just said yep your cars fine fella on your way that's fair enough back to the point of it may be inconvenient but for the ones they do pull who have un road worthy car and so on its worth it! But to say I could do you for haveing to clear front windows is just unbelievable. I thought he was lieing when he asked if that's a law!
-
I've had marked cars follow me, literally speed up to my bumper whilst typing on their computers....it's comical and sad at the same time.
I'm not the biggest fan of the boys in blue.
