 HI all , as title what do you think , ie colour, wheels, doors, etc P.s Also what don;t people like ??? ( when buying second hand)
-
Xenons and a sunroof would be my preferred things to look for in a 2nd hand car.
That said not many were spec'd with these two together. When I ordered my Ed30, the roof was from memory £515 and lights were £725.
In terms of looks my pref is a 3 door, but aware of the slight practical drawbacks that may bring.
-
DSG, Highline, Heated seats, Leather, Xenons and multi function steering wheel. Spend the extra on an ED30 if you can.
Dont buy one with poor service history, any signs of damage, general signs of not being looked after, swirly paint from automated car washes, rusty arches.
There are loads about so you can be fussy.
-
Add low miles compared to age to the list above
-
Dislike Red cars and Silver is for rep mobiles, give me Steel Grey, Pearl Black or Candy White any day :happy2:
Must haves:-
Xenons
Highline
MFA Wheel
DSG
Anything else can be added easy enough (Sunroof a bonus!)
FSH and under 40K
For ED30 there are approx 2250 of them, DSG models about 850, Good color and spec, maybe 50-100, you cannot be that fussy when buying what you want :signLOL: :signLOL:
-
MF wheel
RNS/CD 510
Gti 'D' shaped steering wheel
DSG
Decent Service history
Maintainence with genuine parts (unless upgraded aftermarket)
-
Can only speak for myself when i was looking for an ED30 and everyone has their own preferences regarding their wish list.
Really not a fan of DSG so for me it had to be a manual, had to be 3 Dr and Tornado Red with FVWSH and lowest possible mileage. Xenons are a good option as in a sunroof and Highline. As mentioned everything (within reason and price) can be retro fitted. Not to worried about paintwork, a full detail is always a must after buying a car IMO.
Spent 6 months waiting for the exacteone I wanted to appear in a For Sale section but still no Xenons but as said they will be retro fitted.
:happy2:
-
Agree on the above options. For me it was colour. I wanted Laser Blue and Xenons, fell lucky with mine having a massive spec but the condition isn't as good as if I would have had from new. In hindsight I wish I would have gone for a better condition model now.
Learn from your errors though!
-
For me I would say xenons. I was lucky that mine was specced with them. Whilst they can be retrofitted you need to then do the washer jets too (unless car has winter pack) and the light switch etc. much easier to retro other bits like cruise and the RCD/RNS510's. They ate truly great, and watching the washer jets pop out is :happy2:
Do love the armrest I retro fitted so defo recommend!
Personally I wanted a 5 door and non leather, and although originally ignored I bought a tornado red one - which I do not regret - true GTI colour.
I agree with the guys above, it's about condition and history for me. They come will lots anyway as standard so you won't be disappointed whatever spec you get. :drinking:
-
Make sure the condition is good and history adds up. Otherwise 'extras' are worthless if you end up with a dog.
My extras list was:
3 Door in Diamond Pearl Black with 18's
DSG
Highline
MFSW
Xenons (didn't get this in the end)
Started off looking for leather but after trying both prefered cloth (ED30 seats are the best combo)
-
Can't see how you will get the answers you are looking for as I read the first three posts in this thread and disagreed with them all. Surely it's all personal preference so you should really be asking yourself the question.
Get as much spec as you can for the money you have to spend.
None of the items listed above are a necessity unless you want them. :happy2:

^^^Absolutely agree^^^
I got a low mileage car which hadn't been serially raped by the owner. I would have liked a few things eg MFSW which weren't there, but decided to take it due to the cars condition.
The only thing I would've turned it down on would've been colour. Had to be RED!

Exactly. For me a lot of he things mentioned are superfluous, and almost all of them are certainly a matter of personal taste.
-
Be low mileage,
Mfsw
HIgh line
Service history
Wouldn't be bothered if it has xenons or not
Sun roof would be could if it had one fitted
-
must have FULL SERVICE HISTORY :happy2:
-
Don't do what I did...
I wanted a black/blue/white/red/steel grey with high mileage on an 08 plate - ended up with reflex silver and the rep hadn't bothered to thrash the thing over thousands of miles so it only had low mileage on an '07 56 plate :sad1:
I wanted xenons but ended up with a trash box with candles instead so I can't drive it at night
I wanted leather so I could revel in thought of the herds of beasts that had laid down their lives so I could recline in comfort but ended up with hessian cloth instead which is so itchy I have to stand up to drive it and the wife and my son refuse to sit in it so they travel clinging on to the roof for dear life
Finally no highline dash means I can't play PAC man whenever I'm driving which weirdly really makes me focus, the resulting lack of arcade machine that comes with the highline has seen me crash umpteen times and the car is now minus a font end and crawling along on 3 wheels
At least I got an arm rest - I would have gone insane if i'd ended up without one of those

Lol, it amuses me when people complain about the standard lights. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them. You could try better bulbs?
By the way, we have a BMW with Xenons so I have a good comparison.

I think I may have had my tongue bordering somewhere close to my cheek when I wrote the whole of that post. Well maybe not the bit about the armrest

I agree, the xenons are awesome, and the halogens are pants in comparing them in terms of looks and Especially performance at night.

Waaay too fussy, and don't get me started on the VW DRLs!
-
took me 6 months to buy mine.. bought it for condition and that the owners had it from new, wasn't really looking for specs but got full leather heated and the other usual bits n bobs
-
My wish list was-
Full VW sh
Low miles
Black Pearl Metallic
Bi-Xenons
18'' Monza's
Full leather
Winter pack
Lux pack
Cruise control
Centre Arm rest with storage
Parking Sensors
Multi funtion Steering Wheel
Took me 12 months to find one,I have had her a year now and can honestly say it's the best car I have ever had.
May look to sell her soon as need an estate now
Paint work in good nick
-
Well the guy aint exactly looking hard to buy one anyway. Had contact and he wants one for peanuts. Also trolling this site and the golfgti.forum since January and no car bought? Come on, it doesnt take that long to save up and buy one. Mines up for sale at £6100, and although absolutely standard, apart from the Monza II's its all basic, BUT 2 owners before me, and 63,000 and full VWSH, including the recall for coilpacks, cambelt done at 45,000, front pads and discs, done around 55,000 and the usual BS with the climacontrol air con sorted by VW, and yet still wants it for £5,500.
Just my twopenths.
