Can someone please definitively confirm the part number for the Open Fog Grills? Went to my local VW main dealer and he has NO IDEA what I'm talking about and will not help without a part number!! :fighting:
Are these the correct AND complete part numbers for the open fog grills pictured!!
Am after the whole unit which includes the rear parts.

Thanks peeps :happy2:

Drop the V from the front and they are valid part numbers.
-
Forgive the newbie question but whats the purpose of the open grills - better airflow or just for looks?

In my case it's aesthetics!

....The story goes that VW originally thought that the DSG box of tricks would need extra cooling but this wasn't found to be the case. So, the open version was dropped from production quite early around 2005. I don't know how true that is, but I think it's feasible.

I don't think those are oem as they lack the back bits of plastics but will fit.

....The plastic back bits are detachable on the OEM version. The driver's side (UK) has a flat back which only serves to mask the unsightly white screenwash tank. The other side's back component has an angled duct and that was the functional part for DSG and hot climate cars.
Unless you duct through to the wheel arches (for extra brakes ventilation) they are more for show than go.

^ You can see the angled back duct in the OEM version ^
The back plastic components are also clearly seen in MC71's original post.

They were deleted from UK spec cars from 2005 model year (first DSG cars into the UK in 2004 had them) as deemed unnecessary for colder climates. They are designed for 'warm climate' markets to provide additional airflow and cooling to the DSG oil - hence the scoop and duct on the nearside grille and the blanking plate on the offside.
I've just fitted a pair of brand new genuine open fog grilles to my DSG equipped GTI and love the subtle-yet-different OEM look (must add at least 5 bhp!). I also stripped off the upper and lower radiator grilles, cleaned them and then treated them to a couple of coats of 303 Aerospace Protectorant following recomendations in the Detailing section. Highly recommended product! :happy2: Having a silver car I hadn't realised just how faded the upper honeycomb had become until cleaned and treated...

I got the ones from ebay - perfect fit, top quality and couldn't be happier than I didnt pay some silly price what what is essentially a bit of open mesh on some plastic trim :stupid:
yeah they didn't come with the duct but it doesn't do anything so why bother with it?
-
.
The ones which you all really want to avoid are those where ALL the honeycomb has been cut out. They are very flimsy and available, of course, from fleeBay!

x2 :stupid:
RR i've never seen a set on ebay where all the mesh has been cut out leaving a hole the ones I bought look identical to the ones from VW that they charge twice if not more for
Im quite sure there are a fair few people who have bought them without any problems
-
^^^^
Hey guys, I'm only saying that the versions with ALL the honeycomb cut out, not just the rectangular area as OEM, are flimsy and therefore not a good idea to buy. Plus they expose the painted body/crash bar.

^^^^ Have those ones now on my car and are ok (picture below) but want the early MK5 OEM ones (with rear covers/vent) and as it shows my main concern is with all sorts of stuff (mainly rain) flying straight in with the completely open grill. I know water will find its way in anywhere but with the rear cover parts it can be mostly prevented

May well go with the OSIR carbon ones (or eBay carbon cheepies) in the future as this may allow me to cut out a section next to the fogs for DRL's. Not sure if there's enough room to have the fogs and DRL's side by side though, anyway that's for the future.

....Are yours the FULLY cutout ones? Like the ones I'm advising against and no pics of them posted here?

There may be some helpful info in my thread here (if you haven't already read it): http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1917.0.html
Also, check out NeilM's build thread - He also has OSIR carbons but has now added round circular vent ducts alongside. The problem would be space behind to mount both OEM fog units and Hella DRL's - You would be very ill-advised to cut into the crashbar.
-
^^^^ saw the ducting hole next to the fog on his build thread, actually what gave me the idea. No doubt others have thought the same but as you say it's probably not possible without surgery (not happening in my case) to the car. Might just buy a cheap OEM tyre filled in fog grill and have a play around with the Dremel fitting DRL's, see where I get, can't hurt. If it doesn't work it will save me cutting up some expensive Carbon.
:happy2:
Does look good in Carbon alongside the Redness of your car!! :notworthy:
