Title: Custom Downpipe/decat
Post by: da_ansa on June 09, 2012, 09:45:36 am
Hello all,
I currently have a milltek catback system on my gti and reading someone else's thread has convinced me to go straight through to a stage 2 remap rather than a stage 1. Now to my question; I can't really afford a milltek this month so I was wandering if getting a downpipe fabricated from top gear (a local powerflow reseller) would be fine. the grade of steel looks good. just thought the pipe wasn't long enough to make too much of a difference or am I wrong?

You will need a downpipe, either decat or race cat, ideally 3" and a pipe to mate to your 2.75" milltek cat back... or you could get part number msau343? from milltek which is the pipe from a 3" down pipe to a milltek cat back(think about £40) and just get the downpipe fabricated... then you can go stage 2 :) (Not Revo Stage2 on an Edition - you need more than a downpipe!)

Make sure they are:

Using laser cut NEW flanges
Tig welding the joins
Using Mandrel bends rather than crush bends
Refitting the lambda sensors in the correct position.

I have seen a fair few 'custom' downpipes that have re-used the old flanges and been of inadequate bore size with horrible crush bends and messy mig welds.

as I have a miltek resonated catback would a normal decat pipe found on ebay fit? I found one fitting the criteria that you mentioned

Custom can be a but hit and miss, speak to Nigel at BCS, some tuners even have the odd downpipe laying around  :drinking:

Update:

3" Stainless downpipe & decat fabricated and fitted...

After letting the car warm up I took it out for a drive. (in the wet!  :driver:)

You can immediately feel a difference in terms of power, sound (much deeper and throatier) & even the feel through the steering wheel ( if that makes sense?) then drove it back to the unit to give a big thumbs up  :happy2: and to pay.

On the way back home, I've never had such a big smile on my face. This thing makes a good exhaust sound bloody awesome!, with the occasional pop and bang to suit!

I'd highly recommend Bret at TopGear Performance in Doncaster to fabricate it infront of your eyes.

This is on par with one of the best things I've bought for the car!  :happy2: :happy2: :jumpmove: :jumpmove: :driver:

If it not to cheeky to ask, how much did it cost?
Im currently lookin for downpipe/decat to match my milltek catback.
Milltek downpipe/decat £400 odd is pretty steep!

down south near London unfortunately, your decat looks mint. the place I was going to get mine down was from
the top gear performance franchise. do you highly recommend their work?

I'd certainly reccomend Bret @ topgear but obviously can't be sure on other franchises.

Cost wise, I didn't pay a lot as I've known him for years. But it wouldn't be much over £200 I don't think.

I'd never ever ever get a milltek now I've had this fitted.
