Title: To colour code or not to colour code, *UPDATE - front splitter done too*
Post by: brookesb32 on June 13, 2012, 10:19:58 pm
This little beauty arrived last night - to compliment the colour coded skirts I fitted last weekend, and ready to improve the rear end no end at the weekend!

I got it done by a company called readytofitpanels (.co.uk) and the work is excellent, as is the service and price! They use genuine new VW parts and pretty much do any part - ill be getting the front splitter done next. They are on eBay but better to ring direct and speak to Niall - he has been brilliant throughout.  I cannot recommend enough!

And the best bit - no need to take the old one off first  :jumpmove:

Will update with pics once on the car

EDIT: they supply the bumper too - brand new genuine part- as part of the price

looks good though they say equivalent to OEM... does that mean genuine parts?

How much did it cost to have done?

Yes, it isn't listed on their site but it is now listed in their eBay page. If you call the number on their website and speak to Niall you can explain exactly what you want - I.e, whole or just part of bumper sprayed like I did. He will know exactly what everyone means now he went through it with me  :signLOL:

It does indeed mean genuine parts, and I have recommended he changes that as I told him it was a big differentiator using genuine parts-which they are. The bumper has the VW logo, stamps and part numbers on the back.

I got it done for £150 all in including the new bumper, spraying and delivery. It should be £180, but as he had quoted me the 150 when I first enquired he honoured the price. Even at £180 I think it is a great price!

.
I don't quite get it: You pay £180 to get the exhaust trim part of a rear bumper painted black? Surely it would cost considerably less to have your own part painted and would give you a closer paint match if done by a professional bodyshop, and they'd fit it. A good bodyshop would also give you a courtesy car while they do the job and let it cure 24hrs.

Not sure I follow you RedRobin

For the money you get a new lower section of the bumper (that is £60 new from the dealer anyway) which then gets sprayed any colour you wish - in my case Tornado Red (the beat colour naturally ) and the bumper delivered. I just chose to have them not colour code the part where the exhaust goes through, and to leave it natural in its black plastic. They would spray it all one colour, or mixture of colours should you wish.

This also means you have your original bumper to sell on and not have to have the bumper off the car whilst it is at the bodyshop - my small local place wouldn't be able to offer a courteous car I'm sure.

sounds good... has the bumper got the VW stamps and do you know if it was smoothed and primed?

certainly does, was the first thing i checked - pic below.

the way they do it is to use a high build primer first, which is then smoothed, followed by the necessary number of coats of paint and lacquer etc, and then they polish at the end. I'm sure there is more to it than that, but that is the basics.

this is the ebay link to the particular item if it helps

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK5-GTI-REAR-BUMPER-LOWER-SECTION-PAINTED-TO-YOUR-COLOUR-/140769591070?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20c6857f1e

I'm very happy with the finish!

I have also been chatting with Naill, he is currently looking into GTI side skirts and should be getting back to me soon.

Will be getting my rear bumper soon as the pervious owner of my golf has used black vinyl and it is peeling off.

Look forward to pics and too see how it fits :)

or

part colour coded like this one in thread?

Part colour coded looks best, alot of people with full colour code, I.e ed30's wrap their lower half and IMO it looks alot better

im not long after getting mine colour coded, front lip i left the lower part natural, got the side skirts sprayed & left the lower back part of the bumper natural.
It splits it up, no worries about the vinyl coming of to replace threw time...

Good job! :happy2:

Well everyone, here is the final result. We found it much easier to remove the top half of the bumper as well for the re-fit - in fact we wish we had taken the whole lot off in one go to start with, would have been much quicker

EDIT: for those that are thinking of doing this you need to make sure you order the tow eye cover too, as that does not come with the bumper (£5.51 - 1k6 807 441 B). If you are getting the lower bottom section sprayed too don't forget to order when getting bumper sprayed. If you are leaving it in black plastic like I did then just order and push in :)

Well i have a black golf, so not sure if it would be much of a difference tbh?

It doesn’t make as much of a difference as the other colours but it does make enough of a difference to make it worth it IMO.

Great pics will order mine tonight me thinks :)

Does he order the tow eye cover or is it from the steelers?

Also is the black bottom part textured or smooth black?

Many thanks :)

Thanks

I ordered my cover from the stealers, but I'm sure if you ask Niall and give him the part number he would order it for you when he gets in the bumper.

The bottom part is textured plastic, just as it is from the factory, but you could get that coloured too in black of course :)

Choices choices  :drinking:

Personally I think they look better with a bit of definition, but each to their own. I do know a number of ED30 owners have either wrapped or painte the lower section of theirs in black to break up the colour.

But the choice as they say, is yours  :signLOL:

Edit: dont know if this helps, but saw this car in Canada when i was on honeymoon, fully colour coded

Well got my rear bumper on order.

Also spoke to Naill, he can do the Skirts for £139.99 per side. This will be new gen skirts, and finished to the same standard as the rear bumper. I havent looked into bodyshop prices so i have no idea if this is a good deal or not?

Thoughs people?

Well, the skirts are £40 each from the dealers so £100 a side for spraying (an delivery inc I guess?)

If it helps I paid £80 to get one of my skirts sprayed an it was an R32 pre primed version, so sounds like a pretty good price to be honest. I would think you could barter a little of you got skirts and a bumper done  :signLOL:

looks good that mate. If her indoors allowed me to tinker with ours or the car was wholly mine then that's what i'd do with it in terms of colour coding, as folks say a bit of definition really looks good.

As it is i can live with the black bumpers as they look passable on reflex silver, again they do actually work as definition. I think the same goes for candy white. Of course they aren't so noticeable on black but on all other colours they just look odd, red being the colour they offend the most on imo

Yeah it looks smart that, scopes. I think I'd do the rear and the skirts the same as yours but I'd probably leave a bit of black round the front, maybe just on the actual splitter itself to provide that little bit of detail

Like most people, (and possibly Scopes, can't tell from the pic angle) get the main splitter sprayed but leave the centre section in black - like you say to give the extra detail

Ok so here are the pics - i promise more once i have removed the black middle section from the old spoiler and put the middle section onto it and the whole thing on the car  :happy2:

Paint job is very good. The only parts where you can tell it isnt smooth is underneath - which is going to be covered by the centre part of the spoiler anyway  :drinking:

That's a small but very effective mod - A great improvement in the overall frontal styling. Makes the car look lower at the front and is better for it. IMO.  :happy2:

Thanks RR - couldn't agree more, and like you mentioned with your rear bumper flowing into the side skirts, this has the same effect at the front

....I'm obviously not the only bod with a designer's brain here  :happy2: - That's right, once you colour code the side skirts you then see what you need to do to the front and back as well in order to achieve styling continuity. I would probably have gone for the Ed30 front splitter (although what you have done is a cheaper and very effective solution) if the Ed30 had existed back then, so I went for the OSIR splitter.

Looking good ;)

On a slightly random note , I want to get by rear bumper colour coded , to save looking like an idiot when talking to body/paint shops , what would i need to ask for to get a proper job done ?

.
I don't quite get it: You pay £180 to get the exhaust trim part of a rear bumper painted black? Surely it would cost considerably less to have your own part painted and would give you a closer paint match if done by a professional bodyshop, and they'd fit it. A good bodyshop would also give you a courtesy car while they do the job and let it cure 24hrs.

i disagree i just took mine to get a quote and was quoted £200. That was after he wined about how much work it was and how the plastic wasnt ment to be painted so the paint might fall off  :scared:

A decent bodyshop should know what they are doing,  but essentially it needs to be at least high build primer (some people get the plastic smoothed first - mine wasnt), then that is smoothed before paint coats and top laquers etc.

The colour coded side skirts on my GTI are an awful job to be honest. Looks like they were painted on the car! Is it possible to even get them looking factory fit or will I have to get some genuine R32/ED30 skirts? I hate the textured finish behind them.

Is £150-£180 still the going price to get this done or has it gone up?

With that company it has gone up, as it is a lot of work to prime and paint - but still well worth it!

Looks mint, I need a new splitter after my wife mangled mine off the kerb, and this company is only 30 mins away so might see if I can get anything off for pick up.
