Title: My MK5 Journey
Post by: OllieL on June 17, 2012, 04:35:02 pm
Hi

Just bought myself a mk5 golf GT TDI
Has been mapped by previous owner to 190BHP
Is currently on AP coilovers and Genuine R32 alloys
Have just got myself some 19" Bentleys to go on it too (5 spokes not splits :( )

Am hoping to put a jetta or Gti front end on it too at some point then just enjoy it
Am a fan of the 60mpg average I've had so far

Any tips on where to get new bits/ GTi front end/ Jetta Front

Hi from what I've seen on this forum therse allways
Lots of things coming up for sale
It's a really good way of emptying your
bank balance but good just keep looking
On the parts for sale section.

Yeah you're rite

Since I posted that I've had a Jetta Front bumper of a local member with a front grill (which has now been de-plated and painted body coloured)

Need to 'joey' my headlights now to make the front end more tough for when I fit the front end next week.

Also picked up some Bentleys so will trial fit a couple of them before they go off to be powdercoated (From Black to Silver)

Also picking up a RCD 310 tomorrow, so if anyone has any tips of where I can get an updated canbus then that would also be great.

My biggest problem is lows!

I've got the helpers out of the rear and i'm all the way down at the front, but still can't get the thing low enough

Are there any top mount raisers etc I can get for a mk5?

Was going to start a readers ride with pics so will do that and link to here when i take some next week

Ha I've been on that slippery slope for a while
Had a few modded Vw's

My Corrado Toy (Having an engine conversion)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2Ffa7bbfa0.jpg&hash=4722e029cffbb4f45d566bd21f4422f3868b2b9d)

Old Raddo Daily (Gone)

Mk1 Golf (Sold to buy the Mk5 Daily)

So I think the MK5 was never going to stay standard for long

Someone smashed my wingmirror today!!!
Need a new LA7T Grey wingmirror cover from somewhere

Love the white Caddy and particularly the dark red Corrado Toy!  :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:

But, personally, I hate Bentley alloys on Mk5's - Ostentatious bling ain't my thing! Posing is, yes, but not bling.

But each to their own and a warm welcome!  :happy2:

Just found this thread

Didn't realise I had replies - Thanks for the kind words about my past and present cars

Bit of History about my current progress with the mk5 then

Started out looking like this

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2FE52C023F-3A3E-4630-8853-C9C85C6875D6-3422-00000122FC1138D3.jpg&hash=0875617f9d3aeb9f2c8d7ddf0314c3a7b09812ec)

which was a nice starting point

Was then made a little lower and was a good daily hack
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2F36F93958-94C1-4CB8-A06E-B2212A7B3961-3422-00000122EEFFDF34.jpg&hash=8a00f75e8fd7958805db4eeb0cb855326dfd432e)

Went Bentleys for a bit
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2F75053167-1548-46F8-94C6-807311A76897-3422-00000122F70014A0.jpg&hash=198f2f6aefde6ba309fb7b2f86952ece59a9b35b)

But didn't like the black and then kind of lost my love for them after not really being able to get my car to sit low enough with just the screw mod
So instead I put those up for sale and changed the front end instead

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2F864BD202-B7F7-4339-848F-37477A1DB841-3422-00000122E88747AE.jpg&hash=37c4f57f6a10a68d86fd315ade9250ccfa9e56d4)

Decided I wanted something nice to sit on
So went to see Steve

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2F0496BDA6-4B36-405C-B22A-C50EE65DD7BB-3422-00000122D03F4A9E.jpg&hash=ddc0d07a1bda453e2498d5211619c9c692021dd2)
His car made mine look rubbish

But my drive home was made nicer by these

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2F8C60383B-96A0-4DE3-996B-BBAE7DE4C9AB-3422-00000122E5648869.jpg&hash=3c524d50a9b8ef4233a993ade669a1ccd27f2346)

Liked the rear bumper he had on his (I always envisaged getting an R32 bumper and smoothing the exhaust plinth, or failing that getting a votex one)

So went back to see him again and bought this
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2F7D8586A1-1DB3-4B9A-A31C-09CF9C538E9C-3422-00000122E146878C.jpg&hash=5664221ef1a69d2e7c6eb3d7c99df27e496fd635)

Waiting for another day off work now to change my canbus and fit an RCD 310 so I can use mp3 cd's and better sound quality

Then it's the toss up between starting to collect parts for air or new wheels

What do you think of my progress so far?

Ollie

Indeed it was, sorry

Wanted to go and pick up some air ride to get an install going for after Christmas.

Unfortunately money had had to be spent elsewhere, which is a bit disappointing.

Guess the whole air ride thing might not have been the most sensible for a 10K a year daily anyway? (That's what I'm telling myself anyway to lessen the blow)

Have however done a deal with a friend with a few bits and prices so should be new wheels on this week (should be taking flash wheels off for winter, but that's not what I tend to do).

Might also be on the look out for a new bonnet so I can have the front end painted after Christmas ( anyone know of a united grey one about)

Wheels really transform the car now, with the temp arch work could probably go all lower at the front and get a full tyre tuck

Might be taking some photos at the weekend so will get them up then

Got another couple of parcels at work today too : )

....Really?  :surprised: I'm very surprised. I think they suit a Steel Grey GTI very well and also pay homage to a lot of track cars, though not a lightweight alloy style.

Far better than some of the oversize and bling wheels that some folks on here think look cool. Bentleys on a Volkswagen Golf   - How pretentious is that! In my opinion
Title: Re: Hi - New Mk5 Owner

I know, what kind of numpty would do that kind of thing   :pomppomp:

I thought the white would look nice with the contrast against the paint.
This is however coming from people who have no idea about modified cards, as they all drive expensive audi, overfinch, vogues etc

Will be taking some pics at the weekend with a mate when it is clean, so can decide then
Have fitted one of the two parcels I got this week, and I'm very happy with the result  :star:

Need to order my christmas present to myself, some gti skirts to get the sides looking a little lower to the floor now i'm riding on 19's
Then untill the new arches in the spring I think I'm finished :)

Found a drain plug in the boot is missing, think this might be one of the causes of my car steaming up more than normal, just need to find a plug now and then check that I don't have a leak in to the boot

My last package has turned up now, so just one more part to fit when I get a chance : )

Anyone looking for a leather rim gt wheel and bag??

No pics this weekend as it was Aweful weather and Birmingham traffic was terrible!!

Might see if I can get this changed over to a readers ride thread now, as that's what it is turning in to now

Wow
Been a long time since I've had time to update this

Been helping a friend with a car and working too hard!!!

Have the two front sings ready for better weather. Also bought 2 x 8.5 inch wheels for the front to reduce the poke in the front sitting more flush than the rears

Will get it clean and some pics soon

Few things been going on with the car recently

Have narrower speedlines to go on the front to have a more even poke
Just waiting for bolts to be polished first.

Front arches have the typical rust on, which has been worsened by the weather and snow being caught in the arches. Also have a couple of bits on the car that need tidying so thinking of a couple of new wings and then a

Full Vinyl Wrap!

Am thinking of having this done at PW Pro in Mansfield.

Any opinions and information about vinyl wrap care and wrappers would be much appreciated!!

Well this really hasn't been updated for a while, not a lot had changed due to house and work commitments. It had just been being used and abused as a 12K a year daily

Had just got a driveway sorted on the front of the house so I could start washing my own car again, and was Re-finding the love for the car and wanting to tidy it up a bit.
Got myself some new buckets and grit guards
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2F595D0E5C-E134-45D0-B16A-C0784FF8C8D2_zpsps4tred1.jpg&hash=5146e4cebb248dd75a06e2f397db874ad6402bf8)

Then my luck changed when parked up in town, when someone reversed in to it as I was getting out of the car.

Was a loud bang but only cracked my rear bumper and popped it off the bracket at the back.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2FD826D1F5-3AC9-4E66-A649-389F30BEB931_zpskfiagt4h.jpg&hash=6c264a39c0a1f62736098fbe8731833c6de1bf50)

He missed the space next to me by quite a lot!!

Luckily the guy was happy to pay for the damage so it was booked in to be repaired. While it's booked in the tired and now quite rusty front wings are being replaced and the whole front end re sprayed to sort out any stone chips and mismatches of paint.

Before it went in for paint treated it it some new brakes : )

Plans of changing wheel colour and further paint in the summer depending on money available. Should be looking much tidier for the summer

Car is staying in the body shop over the weekend as it wasn't quite finished.

Am now looking around for door skins for both passenger and drivers doors.
Have a number of dents etc in both of my doors (at least it's the door and not the rear wings) and with the scratches and an odd bit of laquer peel I thought if try and renew these too at some point during the summer. Does anyone have any advice of where to get them from/ has any stashed away?

Car is painted

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fq76%2FOllieL85%2F14A48515-B4EA-4A1D-B284-27917B1260B6_zpsm2fy1ofh.jpg&hash=143db2409f97e165810a5b92a43525b92a36fb1c)

Should look a lot tidier when it's back on the road!
On the look out for a replacement drivers door skin now so that I can get those renewed and painted during the summer to get rid of the tatty paint on the drivers door and parking dents

Car is back, light was too bad when I got it back to take pics.

The wings are like a work of art how well they are rolled and how straight they are!

Makes the doors look so so tatty now!

Hopefully be back in within the month to have the doors sprayed in now!

In other news I have also stupidly started bidding on new wheels. If a deal can be done I could well have myself a new set. So the Speedlines could be up for sale

Picked up a second hand door today, turned out the guy was less than half a mile away from where I work - so made that easy. Door skin is ripple free, with no parking dents, so an easy job when it's painted

Gave the car a wash when I got home - looks a thousand times better with new wings

Car is now booked in for the doors to be painted. Bit stupid having it done seperatly when I think about it, but the rear needed to done and the doors and sides will be blended in now.

Also managed to buy some new wheels from German Ebay. Hopefully arrive by the end of the week, and I'm off work next week. Will have a play and see what they look like before I decide what to do with them.

Does anyone have any schmidt flat or flush fitting centre caps?

Not sure what to do with them. Painted centres or polished.

Although might need to sell a set now as have house things to pay for

Yeah. The speeches are a timeless wheel. Look factory in a mk5 IMO

Seems a mix of feelings on the wheels, I've had people loving them and then other preferring the Speedlines.

The Mrs isn't happy with them, but she may well get her way now as I might need to sell to pay for house repairs : (

We shall see!

No real updates for a while

Schmidts were sold, so car stayed on the Speedlines for the moment.

Had a problem with a blown coil over, running them all the way down for so long had finished the near side one off and the car was horrible to drive.

However Matt @ dubunit has sorted it out good as new : )

Also had a fit if some different wheels

TH lines are off.

Found out that they can be easily reverse mounted for a little bit more friendly offset.

Wheels are to be split and sorted

Liked how they sat when rolling on to the ramp

Title: My MK5 Journey - old content now being updated
Post by: OllieL on August 30, 2020, 06:10:47 pm
So, it’s been a long time coming, but time for an update (of sorts).

The Golf had to go unfortunately, as I got a new job with an extremely long commute.

However it was replaced with another MK5 - a Jetta DSG highline.

Pics of this will follow if I can find some (this was 2014 I think).

Car had a stage 1 remap, and drove extremely well. Was probably the most reliable car I’ve ever had!
Unfortunately it was also the most boring! It was kept completely standard (apart from S3 Brakes) and was a fantastic mile muncher, covering 50K miles in two and a bit years (almost 30K if that in 9 months).

It was then unfortunately hit by someone pulling out of a side road, and unfortunately written off

I drove it for a year, and again it was faultless, before it was then replaced with, exactly the same car again!

This was short lived, as my job changed and I was working much closer to home again.

This was then swapped for a Steel Grey MK5 Golf GTi 3 Door Manual

I bought this car from a friend who runs a VW specialist garage, and was one of the cleanest MK5 golf early shell cars (blue glass and no roof ariel) I had ever seen! I pestered him until he sold it to me.

The car has a bit of an interesting past, as it had owned a long time by someone in the VW scene as his wife’s daily, before he then had the engine transplanted in to his caddy ‘Show Van’.

The car then had a lower mileage BWA engine installed by my friend, to replace the previous AXX that ended up in the caddy van.

This was then run my my friend for 2 years as a well looked after daily, before I got my hands on it .

Then the fun started - over a two year period it became
MK7 Golf R Brakes
17” Monzas
Leather GTi Wingbacks
Round leather GT steering wheel (I much preferred for daily)
RCD 330 - with CarPlay
Depo Projectors with LED Bulbs
Loba Fuel Pump
Turbo back Milltek exhaust (resonated for factory style noise)
Koni Orange struts with HR Springs
K&N typhoon intake kit

It ended up as a bit of a sleeper  :pomppomp:

With a baby on the horizon, and COVID hitting, I briefly flirted with another Jetta as a potential family car - this time a 2.0 TFSI

However, after adding
RCD330
K&N typhoon
Depo Projectors
GTI flat bottom wheel
GTi Wingbacks and leather rear bench
New genuine thermostat and cam follower

I just didn’t have the love for it - and it was promptly sold. The golf continued on daily duties (and is great fun doing so)

However, a 5 door car was still ideally needed for back up family wagon (so I could reasonably transport our daughter if needed).

That brings us to the present.

A Black 2009 MK5 Golf GTi Pirelli DSG
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200830/ba373e343f90d80a890abbda4d65fa2c.jpg)

Rather than start a new thread, I might just add to this one.
There are plans on the horizon, but to enhance the Pirelli, rather than “modify it” as such.

Plans are
Milltek Cat-Back Exhaust (resonated)
Pre-Cat removal
Loba Fuel Pump
MK7 GTi performance pack front brakes
RCD330
GT leather DSG/MFSW (to save the Pirelli one)
Stage 1 Map

The 3 Door GTi will be slowly returned to a reasonably standard but well sorted car before it has to be sold (if anyone wants a very clean car).

But project Pirelli will be fun!

Thanks for reading

Ollie

Hi mate

Thanks - I had always wanted a Pirelli, because of the exclusivity and that interior .

Means I will be pinching some of the parts from the current car, and then selling the rest and the original car as standard.

Just finished the first “enhancement”

We had a rather mint, but very bad RCD300 fitted into the dash.

The standard stereos are something that I think significantly ages an older car, in comparison to newer models.

However, Apple CarPlay is easily added to a MK5 platform car these days, and is one of the first mods I’d recommend to any MK5 owner

New RCD330 fitted with CarPlay
Bringing the car right up to modern in car entertainment standards

Stage 1 of ‘enhancement’ has begun

Since the last update.

Oil Service and all important DSG service was done.

Car is currently on 31800 miles, but oil has been in the box for getting on for 11 years.

Came out looking “well used” shall we say. But a trip to TPS means fresh oil and filter now fitted.

In other news

Had some of these made

Should have come as standard
