Hi i have a mk5 silver golf. Im wondering wether to go for the r32 rear or not its a 3 door.. Need opinons please..
-
I was going to as there was a r32 rear bumper the same colour as my gti but chose against it. I think with a colour coded rear valance the gti's look as good.
-
I'm fitting one soon on my Edition30,along with a Milltek R32 style cat back...
-
it's not that i don't think it looks good, but i think the R32 has it's own style which includes the rear exhaust layout so imho i wouldn't go for it
maybe something like RedRobin's rear? it still uses the R32 rear bumper/valance but is something a bit more like the Mk6 GTI exhaust layout (but with 4 tips )
-
.
What I like about the R32 rear design is that it visually picks up on the side valances:

The R32 bumper also has exhaust pipe cut-outs which allow for various configurations including the OEM GTI twin tips:

Sorry but I dont get making a GTI look like an R32 at the rear - it's not an R32.
stick with GTI rear - as VW intended.
-
IMO the R32 rear looks brilliant. Which is why I was thinking of having it on my GTI but just can't justify the cost right now.
I also really like RR's rear end  :happy2:
-
R32 rear end looks miles better than the standard gti rear.its the best thing that I like about my motor and glad it was already done when I purchased it. standard gti rear just looks plain, dull and sh*te to me now and would never change it back.
-
Why'd you not buy an R32 then instead of trying to make the model look like something it's not?
Nice of you to slag off GTI rear bumpers on this Forum though - what's the name of it again...?

The R32 is a totally different car and a lot more expensive to run. Personally I would not be adding the R32 rear end for the purpose of making my car look like something it’s not, as it will still have the GTI badge. I just prefer the look of the rear end.
-
.
In my case it's not a matter of trying to make my GTI look like a R32 (I also would have removed my GTI bootlid badge if that was the case). Having a custom Milltek quad exhaust I had the need to change the exhaust trim anyway and, with my professional designer's hat on, I felt the styling of the OEM VW R32 rear better matched the GTI's side valances (as previously stated and illustrated with a pic). Furthermore, I do not have the characteristic central exhaust pipes of the real Mk5 R32.

.... :scared: Now you are beginning to worry me! I know that some American girlies are named Robin but it's usually spelt 'Robyn' and I'm definitely a guy.
-
I bought a gti cause I wanted a 2 litre turbo rather than 3.2 engine but as far as looks go I ain't ashamed to admit that the r32 is a lot better looking than golf gti .each to there own tho I suppose.

the whole point of modifying cars is that we take a car built for the masses and modify it to our own tastes. if we all had the same tastes it would be a fairly boring art

And to add another spanner to the works, I came across this picture of the R32 rear with concealed pipes which I quite liked.

I love the clean look. You can get the insert from srs tech.. Always wanted a quad exhaust on mine but I really do like the clean look, it has really grown on me the past few weeks, especially as the one on srs's site is a laser blue one

Thanks for the replies guys. I think r32 rear wins it. If i buy a rear r32 bumper it will have to be original with the exhausts in the centre. R32 rear makes the car look much beefer in my opinon

....Sorry, I know many of you have seen this pic before but it is particularly relevant:

I do much prefer the R32 look to the GTI.
But at shows most people mod the rear by putting an R32 rear on, so I opted for something a bit different.
If you don't want it to look just like an R32 from the rear you could always smooth the joint lines or slightly fill it to make them more like a pinstripe.
Here's mine currently:
Mainly love the symmetry of having the central exhaust too.
-
OooooH! all showing off our rear ends.
I too smoothed my R32 rear, the votex rear is also a great look. :happy2:

I have to admit I do rather like the smooth option ala Top Cat, but I also like the curved half colour coded standard gti rear - but as I just ha it done I would be a little bias

Mainly love the symmetry of having the central exhaust too.
....Al, with your rear end as it is, I would be inclined to remove the side valances to continue that smooooth look.
I like symmetry too, which is partly why I took up the offer of Milltek quads way back in 2005.
-
Thanks guys.. I love your car Bigal it looks nice.. Bigal have u sold ur old r32 rear bumper? o do u stil have it?

Sold it a while ago, sorry mate.

Do you mean the side skirts or the rub strips Robin?
I do plan to smooth the doors, and would like to put the votex side skirts on at some point soon.

....I meant side skirts (VW call them valances IIRC). In other words you need only remove them and not need any replacement.
-
Would have to have the bars removed, welded and painted then
(in other words, a lot of £££)
-
I'd go R32 rear but with a GTi splitter/valance that's what I want to do think it looks awesome!
Hope you pull it off in the end

Hope you pull it off in the end
....If you are smoothing and waxing your rear end, the best way is to pull it off very fast.
-
R32 rear, just about to do it too my GTi :)
-
I wanted to do this to my GTI back when I got it in 2009... Then I thought, like others here, that it would take a part of the GTI away by making the rear look like an R32... However, I have recently been seriously considering it again - looks just plain beautiful!

....As a professional designer (now retired) I noticed that the moulded shape of the Mk5 R32 rear continues the style of the side valances of both GTI and R32 Mk5, but the stock Mk5 GTI rear doesn't. Therefore I believe that the R32 rear bumper is a better style match than the GTI's.
However, it is the very distinctive exhaust tip configuration of the Mk5 R32 which immediately and strongly says "R32!". Fortunately, the R32 rear has cut-outs which allow for the GTI twin pipe configuration (and quads as in my case), so by not having the typical R32 exhaust config and by keeping the GTI badge, the result is not pretending to be something it's not.
The photo might help clarify my words/opinion:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb308%2FRedRobin_05%2Ffile-1.jpg&hash=2cb1cb48d6047ac206714c921816cf902039d9d8)
^ Note the continuity of style on each side of the rear wheel (the shape has a natural highlight).

True... I've never looked at it that way before! I'm torn between the idea of an R32 exhaust or keeping standard exhaust set up - like you say, and as I've often thought - using the R32 bumper but GTI exhaust will make it unique, rather than an R32 copy... Maybe a Miltek (gift to myself) will persuade me to stick with the standard exhaust
-
^^^
Yes the standard GTI side skirts seem to be designed to go better with the R32 bumper. And that shot of your GTI shows it perfectly RR :happy2:
-
I do love the back end of the R32. Really sets it off and as above, goes better with the side skirts IMO
-
I'm glad this old post has come back to life :happy2:
I'm after doing the R32 rear with the Gti lower part for the OEM tail pipes, so can you buy the lower plastic part with the tail pipe cut out and fit to an OEM R32 bumper like the grey Gti in this thread?
I found this one on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK5-5-Rabbit-R32-R-Lower-Rear-Bumper-Sport-Valance-Skin-Spoiler-Body-Kit-/320979373472?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4abbdc8da0 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK5-5-Rabbit-R32-R-Lower-Rear-Bumper-Sport-Valance-Skin-Spoiler-Body-Kit-/320979373472?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4abbdc8da0)
What are people's thoughts on the ebay one?
