hi there im going to be buying some new wheels soon but am lost as to what will fit and what won't as i dont particularly want to change the suspension, i know i need 5 studded wheels but what about diameter, rim width, offset, and also tyre width and aspect ratio?
for example i like these rims

Yeah, it says they will in the auction!
-
yes will fit spot on :happy2:
-
Mate these will fit perfectly :happy2:
No need to worry :innocent:
-
ah thanks, what do you think of the wheels on another note?
-
They would look good in a darker colour on a silver car :happy2:
-
any particular example?
-
also, i did a bit of research and found this guys post about how his wheels stick out too much, how can i avoid this in lehmans terms please?

Those wheels you posted earlier will fit perfect as others have said. I always do my sums based on the Monza and ed 30 size. Which is
7.5 inches wide and 51 offset. Those wheels above are 8 inches wide so you have got to add 1/4 of an inch to the front and 1/4 of an inch to the back of the wheel, so that is 1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2
So just on the wheel width alone you would be adding about 6and a half mil to how far the wheel sticks out.
Then you have to add the offset which was 45 that is 6 mil more than the standard monza 51 take away 6 mil gives 45 offset.
So add this 6 mil offset to your 6 and a half mil extra wheel width and you get approx 12 and a half mil of wheel sticking out further than the Monza which is perfect as they are sat quite far in the arch. :rolleye:
I have some wheels coming soon which are about 18 mil further out, which is right on the border of fitting without any other arch alterations or camber. :fighting2:

I think you'll struggle there TC. I'm currently running 8Jx18 CH with ET50 on a 12mm spacer which equals +13mm further out than the Monzas (if my sums are correct) because the damn 8mm H&R spacers haven't arrived from TTS Roadsport yet  .
My car isn't as low as yours and I'm getting a small rub on compression, plus the wheel to my eye sticks out a touch too much.
-
ET42 18x8 225 tyre.
I've now got 2 big holes in my front arch liners and I've forgotten how many times I've had a rubber mallet to the arch lip because they've pulled it.... still, it was funny doing it!
I'm ditching the liners and having the arches rolled :angry015:
-
ok i have no idea what arch liners are and no idea what getting them rolled is lol! im just looking for a straight swap without the need to change anything else, and without potential rubbing, and that don't stick out much to void curbing lol what should i be going for?
oh and i read something about rim protectors what are these?

I dont think your sums are correct Mark, you forgot to factor in the 1/2 inch extra wheel width which is a 1/4 inch to add to your total so yours at the minute are somewhere near 19 to 20 mil further out. :happy2:
+ i have some camber adjust mounts to go on as well, as i fancy a bit off sump scrape. :signIWS:

think your are correct TC :happy2:

think your are correct TC :happy2:
Now there's a refreshing change. :signIWS: :signLOL:
-
So will 18 x 8j et 38 fit ok on our cars??
-
these are also right on the border, you would need to do the arch liner mod and if you lower it you would need a bit of stretch on the tyres. :happy2:
-
My new wheels are 8.5" and ET44 for the front and 9.5" and ET46 for the back :)
The extra wheel width goes on the back of the wheel so if you have wheels like mine, more negative offset brings the extra width away from the suspension.

Can you explain that a bit better please Tom that doesn't make sense to me.
And do you have the wheels on the car. :happy2:

Ahh... you are correct.
http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
I forgot that the Monza wheel isn't an 8 inch, but a 7 1/2 inch.
If I bang the following in to the calculator :
Current wheel specs : Width 7.5 inches - offset 51mm (standard VW 18'' Monza wheel)
New wheel specs : Width 8 inches - offset 50mm (CH wheel)
I get an inner clearance of 5mm less and an outer position of 7mm more.
-
I was being a spanner when I said the extra width goes on the back, it goes on the centre. I should know, I spent the day selling alloys for no money! Hungry Tom makes for confused posts (donate food!) Offset is the measurement between the centre of the rim to the mounting face. If that confuses you, play with this "visualisation" and it'll all become clear: http://www.morfed.net/wheel-offset-calculator/#vis
What I was trying to say was with a lower offset, the wheels stick out more, and with that, it is pulling the extra width away from the suspension. My wheels aren't on yet as I can't afford the tyres (no job y'see) and I know its going to be fun, but my best mate and I got 8s and 9s on his MK3, so the room's there
-
No probs Tom, i thought you had got it wrong, it is confusing this offset lark :rolleye: and i think you may struggle getting your rears to fit but it is possible as you can put some camber on the rear as well good luck. :happy2:
-
They won't be my daily wheels, they will get ruined in no time! I won some R32 calipers the other day so I need to get some daily 18s. S-Lines or Monza IIs methinks!
I've got some free time tomorrow, I might trial fit one of the rears and see how complicated they'll be. I'm sure it'll be OK, I've got 2 grinders!
-
TC, check these out!

Thats the 9.5x18 ET46 wheel, I literally have 2-3mm clearance on the strut and the filler neck, and the arch liners will just cause scrapey noises so they'll have to go!
-
Yikes, :chicken: I thought your confidence would be short lived.
You should be able to sell them on though easy enough.
-
The arch liners have to go, not the wheels! :P
I'm going to get squeeze some 225/40s on the back and I may get some 3mm spacers to give the filler neck a bit more breathing space, but I think I can brace the neck to sit further in. The 8.5 fronts will get some 215/40s
Don't worry, I won't be running it like this daily, just when the shows are on. I like the comfort level you get with the 17s.
-
Your mad.
-
Why thank you! :rolleye:
-
just an update ive seen these wheels on my workmates cars' but cant seem to find any on eb*y has anyone seen them anywhere else, also there are lots of nice wheels on the 2.0 tdi versions of the car but cant find reps or anything on eb*y.
here are the pics anyway
audi i know but would look sick on my golf!

spotted on 2.0 tdi (mines 1.9 with some really crap stocks!)

I've never liked the first ones, the look like poor chinese BBS CH replicas.
The second ones are nice, I think I've seen them on a few Eos's too, so maybe they're off that.
-
i think the audis are nice but would prefer the golf ones,
been researching and also found these

The first ones are BBS Classix, as fitted to Golf GT's. Another horrid wheel design IMO
Not seen the second ones before, but probably, Golf, Eos, Jetta or Passat rims.
What size are you after? 17s?

They may be a bit plain for you but that makes them a doddle to clean, and they look like a good price.
-
18s ideally theyre nice but im after some WOW factor rims
-
the second ones there look the same as my misses' polo wheels but bigger, very similar but smaller than charlestons, nice whells imo :happy2:

These would look sweet, you'd need to make sure the ET's 45 and above, then buy some spigot rings (£15) and probably some longer bolts (£40)

These would look good painted a bit darker and VW badges fit fine.

the 2nd set i like but i really want these

................what the hell are those talon tyres on the second picture ????????.If it's a budget you'r on i would sooner go for a qualty make & get part worn rarther than some rubbish brand you've never heard of.
-
Lol that reminds me, my missus's Ka came with Mohawk tyres on it, and in an emergency I was once offered a "Hero" tyre. Yeah, I'd need the whole cast of Heroes to help me if I ran them tyres!
-
these are nice anyone know what style/size they are?

i think im gonna go these guys shop in oldham and check these out i realy like them even tho they're reps, what i want to know though is will these fit snug? i.e. no sticking out rubbing?

You like R32 wheels, right?
