Just done the first oil change (under my ownership) on the GTI.
Couldn't have been easier. It begs the question why does anyone pay the stealers an astronomical amount to do this.
As far as I know they charge £140 for an oil change (lubrication service) in their posh terms.
I got the stuff from TPS, filter was I believe about £10 and on this occasion it worked out really cheap to do this as I got the oil free.
How many others Do DIY oil changes?

I do my own. I find it satisfying and I also know what baby's been fed (Castrol Edge or Fuchs).
£140 seems excessive; are you sure about that?

How long do you find before your low level oil light comes on after a full oil change? About 4800 miles for me

I don't let mine get down that far! I check once a month and put a tiny bit in if I need to

you shouldn't let it go down that far, you should check it regularly and top it up
i went about 8000mi and it had hit the half way point after my last service - how you drive makes a big difference to how much oil these things burn apparently

As far as I know that is the standard price for a "lubrication service"
Yes they will no doubt have a check sheet of other things they do like check coolant level, check washer fluid, check brake pads but that's all it is checks, they won't actually do any other work other than the oil change.

It's good you change it every 6 months yourself but this isn't saving you any money of you and it to the stealers for an annual service. Unless its a big service (40,000) they aren't going to do much else other than change the oil.
The amount of times I hear people saying they do it for the dealers stamps is scary.
Dealers stamps count or nothing in my opinion. Seeing the VW stamp actually puts me off.
Most VW dealers are a bunch of ass clowns. Well the ones I have dealt with are, and not to count all the horrendous stories on here of how shocking VW service is.

I try to do as much of the work myself as I can, services are pritty simple just awkward with just jacking the car up. I even did my own wheel bearings took me a day like and was a bitch but I did it. Did my coilovers with a mate that I would rather pay for next time ha ha horrendous job especially getting shocks out of hubs.
I like to see service history on a car but nowadays there seems to be a lot of cowboy firms or no more than in the past just more publicised. So anything I can do I will.
